A cool fact about the American Paint Horse, the breed that Rain is, they are one of the few early breeds developed in North America. Spanish conquistadors brought them over as spotted horses and then they were later developed further by both Native Americans and frontiersmen. Which means that Rain was probably bred and born in her village! Another breed developed specifically by the Native Americans is the Appaloosa, created by the Nez Perce.

It never fails that I always end up tearing up through the whole movie. Love your reaction vids girls. We natives are the caretakers of mother earth, but when settlers discovered valuable minerals. The government would either send military to remove or just do what they did in the scene of the village being attacked for no reason. My home is San Carlos Arizona reservation. I flew to Michigan with my dad to visit my sister, and when I looked out the window I was amazed but sad to see what was once "our" land has become.

I loved the parallels your guided to draw between the treatment of an unruly animal and the Native Americans. And you might not agree with the fact that they caught him up again, but if they hadn't he would've been running around for the rest of this life with a bit in his poor mouth. those of us who truly bond with horses can't help but want too gain the loyalty and trust of those more spirited, prouder ones. There's a deep satisfaction in earning the partnership with them.

this movie cemented my liking of Zimmer as a composer. I had watched POTC first, so when I heard this soundtrack I immediately tied it to him. here he sits half way between the synth style he used in Crimson Tide that was common place at the time with other composers like Harry Gregson-Williams and Michael Smith, with their piano synths plus orchestra, and the full orchestra of later years.

This is one of my favorite movies ever, because I actually follow a Native American styled religion. I don't have a "set" religion but I relate to a lot of what Native Americans believe and my Great grandparents and my dad's father were full blooded Cherokee which is a tribe in the Eastern US. Also just for some background, the movie took place when people started colonizing america and a lot of native Americans died in battle to the "white people." They took their land etc. And also why they are taking so many horses is because when the army was there they needed more horses so they would take wild ones and try to tame them. Also fun fact, Native Americans are the only culture in the world that believes EVERYTHING has a spirit. A rock, tree, animals. And they believe that man and nature are equals. I have always loved this movie and I cry every time I watch it. It shows that no matter how much humans will try to tame nature they can't take away everything. Nature will always come out on top. Edit: Also I would LOVE for you two to watch Brother Bear. It's so good, and I promise you will love it as much as you did this one. It has animals in it as well and it has Native Americans culture in it. Pleaseee watch it for my sake lol. You guys are probably the best reaction channel I have found and would love for you to watch that movie. Also Brother Bear is a Disney movie.

Seen a few people mention it, but you two should definitely watch Black Beauty (the live action one with Sean Bean). It’s (IMO) the best adaptation of Anna Sewell’s Book. The story (like spirit) is told from the horses perspective, and follows him through his life. The good and the bad owners and people he meets, and his experiences as a horse in Victorian England. It points out a lot of time period typical (and still relevant) issues with the treatment of horses (the book also talks about some other animals, though black beauty is the focus) and did a lot for equine welfare when it came out in 1877. There are a few adaptations, but the live action version from 1994 (seen a few people in the comments get the year wrong, though they all mean this one) is by far the best and most loyal to the book. Little fun fact: the two lead horses were primarily played by two geldings, docs keepin’ time (black beauty) and Hightower (ginger) they both had impressive careers and both went on to be in The Horse Whisperer, with Hightower playing the lead. Hightower was known to be a phenomenal Equine actor and had this great ability to act the part (believably) of an angry horse and turn it off the moment he was asked. Really interesting horses!

Movies like this always make me cry. Man has been so cruel to animals and each other, it’s disheartening. This makes me think of movies like Dances with Wolves where we see the care and respect that Native Americans have for the circle of life.

Another beautiful and moving horse movie you might that I would recommend is Warner Brothers Studios 1999 adaptation of the Book Black Beauty. Similar to Spirit the movie is told through the perspective and of eyes of the its main horse character Black beauty.

Ladies the wild Mustangs can be observed in Western United States in herds in Oklahoma and Texas that I have seen. They are beautiful and powerful.

Spirit is modeled after a real stallion that still lives in California with the Return to Freedom foundation on 300 acres of open pasture. You can see him roaming with his herd. He helps educate the people about America's wild horses and the difficulty they face. Unfortunately the US government still rounds up and auctions off wild mustangs. Those that don't get auctioned are often left in overcrowded stables and subjected to disease and starvation because of this.
