In my many years of playing Army in the jungle and in the sand I’ve never ever had the luxury of having a tent or tarp. We had a motto of “travel light and freeze at night in tropic rain and wake up wet and freezing cold.” When were traveling over difficult terrain even a light tent was too heavy and considered to extravagant and not necessary to complete the mission. . I don’t have to do that anymore for God and Country. I learned something from you today, an instructor who taught in your exemplary way. Thank you . .

Absolutely fantastic video - wathcing you from Australia here. Solo mama trying to learn some camping skills so I can take my 7 yro boy regularly. You have helped me immensely just even with this "dog" knot! What a game changer! I am going to really try to perfect my tarp assembly next trip. I am so grateful for your gentle explanations, so clear and generous! Thankyou! If I had a class with you IRL I would be so relieved that the instructor was someone with your manner, you put me right at ease here!

Thank you!!! This was so helpful! I just took my gf and kids camping for 3 nights, it rained, I used your tying methods, it really worked! I never knew how to tie knocks or put tarps up before. The tents aren't 100% water proof and I've been soaked in the past. The way you showed and explained it, you made it so simple and yet extremely effective. Thank you so much!!!🙏🇨🇦

Good job T! We use to make tents out of tarps as kids. It was a lot of fun until Dad couldn't find his tarp that he absolutely knew he had! lol We would run our Moms cloths line that she knew she had through the middle holes of the tarp and use rocks to hold the sides down. At night while everyone was sleeping we'd pull the tarp to the other side of the tree and leave everyone out in the open. It was funnier if it was suppose to rain that night. lol

Hi - being older I do pop-up tent camping. But, had the opportunity to go tent camping this weekend in the Badlands National Park area. Decided to try what I had learned in your video as it was very hot and I wanted to cast some shade over a hammock. The set-up went great - used tent stakes for toggles. Thanks for providing new fun learning. That's what keeps your mind young. Glad I found your video!

Excellent tutorial. Thank you. Simply done and so refreshing without all the macho nonsense so prevalent in most outdoor videos. My ridgeline is done almost exactly like yours, except I've been using duffle coat buttons as toggles, attached/knotted to the loose end of the loop (stealing from my mother's button box since 1978). Thank you again.

Untie the prussek on the ridge line put one of the threads through the grommet tie a knot at the bottom of the tread that goes through so it will catch in the loop of the other thread of para cord make a bite with the other fold into a loop and thread through the other one that’s threaded the tarp and pull them the prussek is a modified soft shakle . I used to have soft shackles on my tarp now I use the prussek as the soft shakle .

I use a carabiner and a cam jam to set mine up. I keep the prusik knot attached to my tarp and store it in snake skins, but I love the idea of the toggle stick to attach the prusik knot to the tarp. This is a great video. I could use the toggle sticks and lose some weight on my set up with this idea. It wouldn’t take that much longer to set up.

Great video. Question though if you have the time to respond. When I do this with pretty lightweight p cord, the knot with the "dog" loop doesn't bite, so if I put pressure on the ridgeline, the knot slides toward the tree (actually fencepost for testing purposes), and the ridgeline slackens. Is it the p cord that doesn't create enough friction? I am pulling the knot away from the post when I tighten it down. Thanks.

I'm usually very critical of knot demonstrations, but not with this one. I might do it differently, but there's absolutely no qualms with the way you did it. The two changes important enough to comment on are 1) to give all your nylon and nylon paracord line to your enemies and switch over to polyester or Dacron line. Dacron is the brand name for polyester line, so it's a bit more expensive as a brand, but polyester line (not to be confused with polypropylene) is available at hardware stores and online. The main benefit of polyester line is that it does not stretch whether dry or wet. Nothing is less fun than to awaken in the middle of the night to find you're soaked, because the nylon ridgeline got wet and stretched. The price difference between same-size nylon and polyester is pennies per foot. You can always find Dacron line at marine stores where the price difference is nickels to dimes per foot. Also, second change I'd make, is 2) to form a figure-8 knot for each of your loops. The simple overhand knot binds on itself while the figure-8 does not, and so is much easier to untie.
