This is resonating with me. I had 2 sons die a year apart and I found my Mormon self praying to them rather than to Father. I considered that this was how catholic style Saints came into being. I interrupted this direction because of my Mormon faith. Today I feel my sons everlasting love calling me back. The kingdom of God is within. 🙌🏼😍🥰💜

Growing up without religious programming and trauma is one of the greatest gifts you can give a child. My husband was fortunate enough to live that childhood and he’s amazing and helping support me as I deconstruct.

How people react differently to finding out that there's nothing after death is so interesting to me. I found it incredibly relieving. I stopped living for eternity and started living for me. It removed a lot of shame from my life because I was never going to be good enough according to Mormon standards. I can just enjoy life now. Enjoy being a human.

About 200 years ago, the Universalist minister Hosea Ballou was traveling on horseback beside a Baptist minister. The Baptist said, “If I were a Universalist like you, and didn’t believe in Hell, I could hit you on the head, steal your horse, and leave you lying in the road, and have no fear of consequences.” Ballou replied, “Yes, you could. But if you were a Universalist, the idea wouldn’t occur to you.” I’ve been following this channel for about a month, as a complete outsider. I was raised by two very ethical, moral, atheist parents. I’ve ordered Britt’s book, not because her ideas are new to me, but because they’re very familiar. I’m a third-generation Unitarian. In 1961, within my lifetime, the Unitarian and Universalist denominations merged, so now I’m a Unitarian Universalist. I’ve debated about mentioning this humanist, non-Christian denomination in the comments here, because we’re pretty allergic to proselytizing: many of our members are “come-outers” who have come out of abusive religions. But after listening to Britt talking about so many things that I’ve been taught all my life, I thought I’d mention it, not to suggest that it’s for everyone, but because it’s sometimes a well-kept secret, and maybe some people reading this might find the information useful. I thought about saying more, but maybe I’ll just leave it there. Except to recommend a passage I first heard read in the pulpit at my church. Google this to find it: “You want a physicist to speak at your funeral.”

Each week in my UU church, we say these words together: "Love is the spirit of this church and service is its law. This is our great covenant: to dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love, and to help one another." - James Vila Blake I've been thinking how John might appreciate Unitarian Universalism. It gives me a place where I can explore questions of morality, ethics, and values, a place to create and engage in rituals, a place where reason and science are valued, a place where we gather each week to build the beloved community. When John talks about the good that Mormons get from their church, especially the community aspect, I just want to hug him and remind him that you can get all of those good things and more without the religious trauma. For me, I get them from my UU community. I think "Spirituality: No Faith Required" could be a slogan for UUs. 😊

I am an ex-Mormon, from Guatemala. My family is active members of the Church and I know they are worried about me. My Mother never misses an opportunity to tell me that she prays for me or to directly ask me to return to Church. I have tried many times to either return or attend some other church, but now I read before. I research the history of the church where I intend to go. Whether it be Catholic, Evangelical, even something related to Indian religions. And I am increasingly convinced that there is no religion without corruption. None is what it claims to be. Recently I have felt the need to tell my brothers and my mother how corrupt the LDS Church is, I feel great shame because they attend, so naively give their lives and money to such a despicable thing... But I don't do it because I know it will frustrate them. The Church is a placebo but I myself can't find anything better to offer them. It's so hopeless. As human beings we need spirituality, but throughout history we have related spirituality to religion... I don't know how to help my family now.

For the death deal, I tell ppl that there was a lot of time before I was born, and I’m none the worse for not having been conscious for it. I figure when I’m gone, it will be like that. Stoic philosophy is good for this also.

Highly enlightening episode. I had avoided listening to this particular episode because having "spirituality" in the title caused me to have the "allergic" response that Britt spoke of. She addressed so many questions and concerns, including topics that I still need to work through, including acceptance of uncertainty (and that the certainty we HAD wasnt real), the finality of death, etc. The concept of Jesus as the scapegoat, our "sacrificial lamb," and how far back humans have placed our failings onto an animal, a virgin, an innocent child, and eventually on a man/God was something that I'd never considered. Brilliant!

I used to be terrified that I would be dead some day! Even when as a member of the church! I am connected to everything. No longer terrified. Trying to be present everyday! I get to be part of the ripple effect of humanity! I hope there’s something after but I don’t know! Only know what’s in front of me! AND….It’s fucking awesome!!!

This is exceptionally good! I've listened to it 3 times now. Britt has clearly done the work and is so eloquent - I kept thinking how perfectly she phrased something that I had experienced. I thought I would die on the hill of reading only physical copies of books but I recently started doing audiobooks and it is so much easier for me with my busy lifestyle. I can multi-task even. It is so hard for me to just sit down and read a book nowadays. TBH, I am more likely to fall asleep reading too. 😂😂 Audiobook is needed.

Aww. I look forward to this so much. I’m a nevermo. But, I am deconstructing from Christianity. I was hurt so badly from organized religion, but I still believe strongly in a spiritual world. I feel best when I am not just a physical, intellectual and emotional person, but a spiritual person. I want to be in alignment with my true self and am figuring out what that means. I’ve realized that I am nervous about anything litigious, judgmental or rule based. I, personally, support critical thinking and each person’s ability to decide their own beliefs about this topic. I do miss church and community, but also don’t want to turn off my brain. Looking forward to hearing her story and getting her book on audible.

Excited for this episode, 33 years out of the church and recently discovered spirituality. I guess all my deconstruction has been worked through already though so not so much of a religious brain anymore. What I love about spirituality is there is no one path, everyone is on their own journey and what resonates for me might not resonate for you. Its okay to hold conflicting things at the same time, it's okay not to know if one of those ideas is right, all of them are right or none of them are right. The important thing is you are growing and expanding. What I will say is beware of spirituality meeting dogma, they are opposite sides of the same coin where spirituality is open and dogma closed. It is very easy to treat spirituality as dogma and I think that is one of the reasons there is a certain court case going on in idaho at the moment.

Years ago an early Fidonet Exmormon philosopher Matt Berry wrote three small books on a similar subject. Self Behaviorism, A Human Strategy: Towards a genuine spirituality, and Deliberate Belief: Diary of a Religious Crisis. Theses were my anchors, when leaving the church. No internet at the time, just the Fidonet lists. But that is where I read Matt's insightful reasoning about leaving the Mormon church.

So many views of reality to choose from. The two most common are: non-theistic in which all of creation is coincidental and without intention (science as religion), AND diety that is amorphous without passion condemning some and saving others. Then there's the view of a loving God as Heavenly parents who organized a noncompulsary means to progression in perpetuity. No matter which view you ascribe to, you run the risk of disappointment and humiliation in the here and now. And ALL of them demand some form of mental gymnastics.

John always makes sure he is not against people having faith. He does not bashes the Mormons as a cult. So it would be nice if you don’t use it the Lord but lord. Like lord of the rings, don’t disrespect others faith, not even if it is a cult. Many people as we can see find their own ways and wind up living, but that is very personal. Peace!

I am in favor of you deciding when you are older. But many will be from birth. This is basically how life is, period. Try to go to India and talk about the sacrificing themselves in the river for a god cow or snake? Is not going to happen. You can’t stopped a person that is in the river coming what I see suicide and dedicating their death to this entity. I could not wrap my mind around this. Today I am okay with that, with some sorrow some times, but your life is your, do as you wish. Do not kill others, but your life is your to do whatever. Be free, freedom is the best.

Maybe you need to listen to the podcast again. More objectively. They talked about their years of dedication and prayer. Maybe you should stop telling people how they should and shouldn't have a relationship with God or Jesus

🐦🔥❤ i noticed all religions really are one & the same! They Honestly realky say all the same thing: "If you turn from "us" & Jesus (their Jesus) to another path, you have fallen to the evil w*cked ways of the world!" I found this is honestly in all beliefs, all religions! Honestly, it doesn't matter. I agree! All these believers & religions do n0t care if you heal on your own time or not, they're all just want #s & I find if you don't heal first before finding another "faith" it honestly really does cause more h*rm & d*m*ge, than help to heal. The one who saved me when no one else was there for me 10+ years ago: A white wiccan witch. The others were in nonsense! I acknowledge a higher power in my own way because i have no choice, but I'm so blessed not to follow crowds! ❤
