My name is Dr Tom Micklewright and I'm a Medical Doctor and Digital Health Specialist working in the NHS in the UK.
In this REVIEW, I'll be looking at the Spirobank Smart Spirometer, a new device that offers remote monitoring of lung function and oxygen saturations with a new mobile device and app.

Hi there, I just bought one of these on the advice of my respiratory consultant. I had the old Mir smart one meter before. This is all singing & dancing and I love it. Only thing I am not sure about is that I am unable to put in my own parameters Ie normal best peak flow. My consultant wanted me to have it so he can particularly look at the curve. I have moderate to severe asthma, with "twitchy lungs". So as far as I am concerned being able to have the conversation about next steps, without an office visit is marvellous. It is quite expensive, £135 -£199 depending on version and has to be prescribed, sadly not available on the NHS. However so much better than the old manual pf meter and excel spread sheets I used to make 10 years ago. If you have some money and have moderate to severe asthma I would highly recommend.

Good point Roberta - I've just checked the app out now and although you can view your best results on a graph, you can't actually filter the data tables by best results to find your best peak flow, or enter in your own results. Definitely one for the developers to consider. Great to hear a patient's perspective on using the device though and to hear that it's helped you to manage more of your asthma at home!

@@MickleDoc On my Old Mir Smart One, you set your best peak flow and it automatically gives you traffic lights for Green, Orange more than 40% and Red on your readings, now I have to go back to working it out, for my asthma plan. (luckily my maths is not too shabby) But as my written asthma plan is quite complicated, its not too much of a problem for me, but I know that for other people it would be. My current consultant is more interested in how symptomatic I am and is not that keen on just Peak flow as a measurement he really wants the other readings. However the graph is very helpful and I love the other measurements which will be very helpful for fitness training.

I am currently doing a fair bit of research and the one you are using is a rebranded, which doesn’t seem to be very accurate. The one I want is called Nuvoair spirometer that is in partnership with the national health that’s very accurate.

Not sure if you are still responding to comments on this review, but I was hoping you might be able to clarify something. While I enjoyed your review & found it helpful, I wish there was some info regarding the accuracy of the device. In other words, did you compare the results you got when you used the device (or that any of your patients got with it) to results from a professional-level spirometer designed for use by pulmonologists and other doctors? If so, were the results similar or were there significant differences? The device and app seem nice but at the end of the day it is hard to justify buying without some reassurance the FVC, FEV1, etc. readings are actually accurate (I know MIR states the device is accurate, but pretty much every spirometer manufacturer claims that & it is not always true).
