So I wanted to say something about the Hurricane, just before the comments inevitably do. I would’ve said this in the video, but it’s supposed to be a minute so there was no time. Just because I have done a video on the Spitfire, doesn’t mean I’m undervaluing the Hurricane, or any other plane for that matter. I am acutely aware of the value of the Hurricane, but chose to do this on the Spitfire because I’ve already made a documentary on the Spitfire, so it’s just going to be a better one minute video. I would write something here about how valuable the Hurricane actually was, but chances are you already know that. Despite people claiming that it’s ‘underrated’, most people interested in aviation know full well its value, and sometimes even overrate it. I do hold much personal affection for it though, and I do really want to make a video on it one day, but that’ll be a while. Four out of my last eight videos have been about mid-20th century warplanes, and I do enjoy being really broad when it comes to history. One day I’ll add more to the list, but for now, I’m going to move on. Probably. Any questions you have about the Spitfire, chuck 'em in the comments - I'll probably be able to answer them!

A commentary almost as fast as a Spitfire flying over our heads.

A few years ago I was on holiday in England (I live in the Netherlands) and I was in a bookstore in Colchester were I saw a flight manual for a Spitfire. I thought to myself: how amazing is that: because this flight manual here is totally useless. Nobody has a practical need for it, because people who fly and maintain Spitfires today make use of the professional literature, they're not going to a bookstore in Colchester in the hopes of finding a Spitfire flight manual. The reason why this bookstore sold it is of course because the English realize what a legend this plane is and what it has done for their country, and that is why there is a market for Spitfire things like a totally useless flight manual. And that I think is just brilliant.

Cutting out in a dive ?...well, not exactly a cure to this problem, but something that certainly helped was a little gizmo installed into the carburettor that helped over come this. It was a washer with a small hole in it that regulated the fuel even in a negative dive. This ingenious and very cheap (a few pennies) 'invention was the brainchild of an english Engineer (A racing car, driver, and motorbike racer too) named Beatrice Shilling. It cant be underestimated how much of a difference this small item, basically a washer with a hole in it, made to the performance of the Merlin engine found in both the Spitfire and hurricane in the early days! It was affectionately given the Name 'Miss Shillings Orifice! Slightly Rude humour aside it made the difference between life and death for some until the arrival of the Stromberg Injecto carb latter on (Not a full blown multi point fuel injection but a hybrid version that totally fixed the Negative G issue!) So if you are a Brit ; Three Cheers for Miss Shillings Orifice, Hip Hip …etc, etc Admittedly it would be difficult, or nigh on impossible to include this info in your '1 Minute' Spitfire micro documentary, but just thought it may be of interest to other Spitfire Fan Boys Club, of which I am unashamedly a very Vocal Member!
