This was probably already said, but Foamstars is developed by Toylogic, only partnering with Square for co-development. They developed kid icarus uprising which is what the Smash The Star game mode was inspired from. They've also done some work on Neir Replicant

I hope they add the DJ rubber ducky so we can have another Oddjob situation where playing as them gives you an advantage but makes everyone hate you. Also, regarding the gyro/motion control aim; it's very much dependant on how the game implements it rather than the controller. Also, Mr. Clean! Also good video! Also Mr. Clean again!

Something I really like is the nighttime vibes. I love splatfests in Splatoon partly cause of the nighttime party vibes, and having that all the time in foamstars is great. The better hardware on the PlayStation also helps

Just from watching, my initial expression is that the foam needs more shading and texturing because it is impossible to gauge how much foam there is on the ground and how high it’s piled. It’s somehow too colorful and lacking needed colors

splatoons ink colors were carefully chosen to be as colorblind friendly as possible and foamstars (from what i can see) was not designed like that. just my 2 cents ok so he mentioned that in the video i just hadnt gotten to that part yet lol

splatoon definitely does need competition, but im not particularly confident that foamstars will be able to achieve that. there isnt anything wrong withtaking heavy inspiration obviously, but with how much it has taken from splatoon its not hard to end up comparing it to splatoon much more than it should be. id like to try it myself once it actually comes out though. im sure if they get a mr clean brand deal itll truly blow splatoon out of the water

Even as a die-hard Splatoon fan for the past 5+ years, I WANT Foamstars to do well. It's got a really fun, party vibe that I enjoy, and it's different enough to stand on its own. Hopefully some of the initial criticisms will be resolved by launch.

I sincerely hope this game evolves to be of the same overall quality and content that Splatoon as a series has accumulated across its lifespan; but I am doubtful mostly coz of how SE tends to treat its experimental IPs Being able to play a new game with a similar experience as a game you love is good, maybe even healthy. You don't have to be confined by the limits of what one game/console has to offer, and branching out might even make you appreciate your roots even more.

I'm all for some competition for Splatoon. If Foamstars can gain some traction, I would hope it would get Nintendo to wake up and realize they need to fix S3 so they don't lose some of their playerbase to Foamstars. This is PURELY wishful thinking, but a guy can dream.

I only played it for the meme, but I actually ended up enjoying it. Jet Justice was my favorite character to play, love how his main weapon has 3 different firing types. I think the change of having to hit the opponent with the board after foaming them creates some really interesting scenarios. Mr. Clean better be one of the remaining characters lol

That "Smash the Star" mode is literally just Light vs. Dark from Kid Icarus: Uprising, lmao. Instead of the Mr. Clean Game having you rack up 7 kills then taking out the powered-up Star, Light vs. Dark has you lower the enemy team's health bar (by getting kills), then taking out the player who spawned as Pit/Dark Pit. Also oof, I feel you on the colour thing. Don't get me wrong - I love the neon vibrant look, but as someone who's colourblind... yeah. The weirdly desaturated colours for the teams makes this impossible to play. (Also the fact that I don't own a PlayStation, that also makes this impossible to play :V)

The fact that they have a mode similar to Kid Icarus Uprising's Light vs Dark mode nearly sold me off the bat. Could you imagine being able to play that mode on a modern console with an actual playerbase?? I really hope this game turns out to be good for that alone.

This is the first time I'm seeing gameplay of this game (aside from trailers) and it's mostly what I expected! - The foam and projectiles are obviously too bright against *literally everything else in the game world*, which if they lowered the brightness/intensity by a LOT, the screen would definitely be more readable. Splatfests in Splatoon look alright at night, but this is too bright. - Colors aside, the UI looks clean enough, and there's not too much in the way (cough 8:19). Seeing the sub weapons and special UI immediately reminded me of Ninjala. A simple and (Mr.) clean interface that's less offensive than the bitrate killer that is the foam. - clearly the comments section notices the similarities between Smash The Star and Uprising's Light v. Dark game mode, and that is all I will say about that. I like the gamemode though; sounds like the go-to fun gamemode over the "spectators watching the dogfight" alternative. Just from the testfire, there's obviously stuff Square has to fix on their end (maybe they can adjust the motion control input as well, but that's likely controller-specific), but this looks like a neat alternative to S3 (if you have a PlayStation). I'm hoping it survives past its first year, especially to spite everyone praying upon its inevitable downfall. And as for the playerbase, I hope it won't be a sweatfest where one character/weapon ends up being better than the rest of the cast. Great review ❤

One thing the Splat games understood from the beginning was color theory typically using muted colors for the level environments, and using colors with high contrast for the team colors. one team would have a bright color, the opposing team would have a contrasting dark color. for example in S1, bright orange with dark blue, S2 Hot pink with neon green, S3 Bright yellow, with indigo purple. Very solid design imo.

Im hoping this does succeed because either it could be a cool game in its own right or it could give the sploon dev a kick in the ass to do an update worth a damn

I played a demo of this at a con recently and maybe my brain is just too smooth because I couldn't figure our what to do. Like it could just be the stick settings they had sucked but aiming was really weird. It was unclear where my shots were even going half the time. It was really easy to lose the reticle in the visual noise as well which only made aiming even harder. I also REALLY didn't like how most weapons didn't foam the floor right in front of you, it felt super clunky but that probably just needed a mindset adjustment to get used too

5:34 This mini game is basically the team online battle in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Two teams fight each other and whoever receives the most deaths will spawn a boosted Pit or Pittoo. Man, I miss that game and the anxiety I got hearing the footsteps of a bot sprinting to blast me off a cliff. 🥺

I think the one thing that might hold this game back is the fact Square Enix is behind it. Considering how terrible their track record has been with Live Services (they shuttered like SEVEN within the past year) I hope this doesn't become abandonware any time soon

I tried the FoamStars playtest after watching your splatoon video. Vibes are amazing, I love it. The look of everything feels so nice! The gameplay was fun, but the matches went on too long for me, I had no idea how much damage I was doing, or anything really. The foam is bright, but my problem with it is sometimes you can't even tell what team's color it is.

The gyro issues are definitely a problem with the game as opposed to the PS5, especially since Fortnite & CoD’s gyro implementations absolutely mop the floor with Splatoon’s. When I saw the initial trailer for the game I thought it looked really cool! I was all competition in this genre as I really think this will push both Splatoon and Foamstars to be better. I played the beta and when I could get into a match I really enjoyed it. Soa was my favorite character to play as her movement was alot of fun. I definitely agree with the colour being too bright point. I wish there was a way to set colours for each team, as well as a proper colour lock. Another issue I had was the constant connection issues, it would take me 4-5 times of me searching for a match in order to actually make it through to the pick a character screen. I also could not for the life of me find a match on Australian servers so I had to play on Japan servers which come with its own set of problems, being ping. Overall I agree with almost everything you said, definitely looking forward to the full release!

I found it kinda silly at first when the trailer for it was released, but after learning more about it through your video, I can see it being interesting and that yeah, competition would be good. I agree with your points that it's fun but could use a lot of work with stuff like the graphics/UI and the foam colors being more distinguishable while not being so bright at the same time. 10:27 i can clarify. The motion controls on ps4 are worse than the switch pro controller. It's less precise and less smooth than the switch counter part (as far as the ps5 controller goes i don't have a ps5 but i have played with a ps5 controller and it's better than ps4's but not by much)

I don't have a playstation so I don't get to play this, these points are just from what I've seen from the game. There is severe visual clutter, but since the enemy healthbars are often visible it kinda counteracts that. Still surprise deaths from the cluttered attacks. I personally hate it when 3rd person view is not centered. I get that it should help you see straight forward when you have your character be bigger on the screen than in splatoon, but it throws my aim and sense of location off, and I feel vulnerable from the side which my character would be closer to. Splatoon has very limited motion control settings and I don't have a situation irl where I could use them well and get used to them. However if other games like Foamstars had options to set stick and motion x and y sensitivity, acceleration and deceleration etc. Using my settings would make getting used to motion controls much bettet.

One interesting thing I’ve heard about the seeming lack of new Splatoon content is that 400 new Titles and 80 new Banners were added for the Drizzle Season. That would be awesome if we could purchase them in a shop or unlock them via leveling, but we instead need to grind for the Shell-out Machine for a chance to get them. I mean, I had a lot of fun today playing for several hours since I’m getting back into sniping and absolutely shot up my rank, but even then you’re looking at getting like maybe 60k-70k per day as long as you perform well. Plus I’m trying to fill out every piece of gear’s second ability slot so they’re more competitively viable, so tomorrow is going to be a choice between more upgrades and more customization that shouldn’t be locked behind simulated gambling. It’s still better than paid Battle Passes, but this could be setting a bad precedent. 😭

About the motion controls part: I’m pretty sure it is from PlayStation’s end, cause they’re not really known to have their controllers’ motion controls to be calibrated. I had a test run (and full-on gameplay from beginning, to end.) of Astro’s Playroom on the PS5 from my mom’s friend’s house, and noticed that there were absolutely NO buttons, nor settings options to reset, or calibrate the motion controls of the DualSense controller. This was also the case on the PS4 as well for their DualShock, and PSMove controllers. Because the lack of this, I had to twist, and contort my hands in strange ways that’s inhumanely possible to go through some of the levels that requires the use of motion controls because I couldn’t reset, or calibrate them. At least Nintendo allows you to calibrate the controllers on the spot with a button press, or with the settings menu ever since the Wii, and it’s always been that way since. TL;DR: PlayStation doesn’t like calibrating their controllers’ motion sensors.

hey, to be honest, thanks for this review. i feel foamstars deserves a fair shot, but addressing all the bullshit that somehow made it in to the game is necessary (the colour palette, the possibilities of it being a freemium FortSplatWatch freemium battelpass shillclone is also probably important in the grand scheme of things, because splatoon 3 took a step that way and we should not be celebrating that sort of game structure. Lets go back to when games that you play with friends were released, you could have fun without wishing youll be playing the game still in a year's time to make it worth it, lets congratulate foamstars for being at least satisfying to play, if not needing some tweaks. please squenix dont fuck this up, lmao

I'm not going to play this game, my only "consoles" are my switch and my pc, but I personally think foamstars is a really neat idea. My main issue is what you said in the video, the colours. Its not even a game I'd watch people play because it physically hurts for me to look at a lot of the time. Thats partially due to my existing eye issues (my eye muscles are fucky and my eyeballs are weird) but its also just extremely high contrast in the wrong areas. when watching your footage the colours of foam kinda blurred together or looked white. now given its not turf war that may work but the super high contrast between the background and the foam is very jarring? I feel like they should have gone with a more natural lighting situation (like make sure there is contrast but not so much that its white on black). I personally think they should have done dark base, mid tone foam and bright and dark characters! Then you can clearly see where you are against the foam but oh well. just hope they dial it back, it seems like the kinda game id have a stream of open on another screen while i work but the colours are just too muchh

The more I see of Foamstars the more it starts to grow on me. Characters seem pretty cool (i like AGITO) and the UI is nice imo. But yeah, the foam colors are WAYYY too bright for my liking, as if they set the brightness and contrast up to 99%. Even while watching, my YT video quality took a total nosedive from just how many particles and...THINGS were on screen lol. It's a bit messy... But the game seems alright👍

I totally agree that Splatoon needs healthy competition, but this game will barely put a dent in the genre because of how cluttered the screen gets; it's legitimately hurts to look at and is not a great game for streaming.

Looking at the game for long enough gives me a headache, I feel like that is the actual biggest detriment to it, pokemon scarlet and violet barely work half the time but at least I can see what's going on.

Also re: games being directly called clones of other games, are people still calling games with a format similar to Dark Souls "Soulslikes" yet, or is there a term for it yet? I was looking for a videos about this game the other day and couldn't find anyone who made it look interesting or had anything unique to say about it but "you can terraform with da bubbles." Glad you shed light on the actual fun aspects of it cause it sucks to see a game get clone argument'ed to death before its even come out. Especially when splatoon currently has such a bad case of no-competition-itis. Don't get me wrong I doubt Mr. Clean is going to magically clean up the time vampirism and worser connection of modern splatoon threw the _power of competition,_ but its still a alternative that's worth a shot at the very least. There might even be passion here beyond "making a splatoon" if people would give it the time of day even though Nintendo isn't there to hate you for liking it.

OK weird tangent time. I wonder if the rampant splatoon comparisons (which TBH, are very valid) are partially because of our collective reluctance to broadly adopt better ways to discuss video game genre. By that, I mean for the longest time we called things like FPS and RTS purely based on the mechanical differences rather than the core engagement of the game. This has absolutely been improving with more specific terminology like "movement shooter", "hero shooter", "boomer shooter", etc. Which is way better than calling portal and halo by the same genre FPS, even though we all really understood that they were fundamentally different. It's sorta like when people call anime a genre instead of a medium, and therefore make wonky if-you-liked-you-should-try recommendations. "Yes, these both have big robots and are very well written, but one is an uplifting battle shounen exploring the nature of free will and the other is a confronting political drama and commentary on the horrors of war. Why have you lumped them together." Anyway. Is "area control arena shooter" or whatever we end up calling splat-a-likes a valid way of comparing these games or is that just another surface level mechanical delineation? Do you feel like the fundamental draw of these two (or vibes or whatever you wanna call it) are different? I dunno, I feel like I kinda got lost in the sauce here. Call Mister Clean to help me out.
