For people that go into stores like Target and see regular Splendor on the shelf, they're not drawn to it because they don't know what it involves by just looking at it. With Marvel pasted on, now they're interested.

Now with the Time token ( green ) you must at least take 1 card from the highest row . We've noticed that with the classical Splendor the most of the taken cards were from the 1st and 2nd row and you can still win. So i think it's a good thing to add it so you must take from the 3rd row.

As always, I love these 4 way reviews where we get to hear multiple opinions and different reasons why those opinions exist. i know it'd be unrealistic to expect them constantly, but just wanted to state how much of a value-add they are in comparison to a normal review.

The Sniper mode that Zee was talking about where you gun for one particular colour to get huge discounts that include that colour rarely works against experienced players, especially if there's more than 2 players. Anyone can see what strategy you're going for and will reserve those cards as soon as they come out just to stop you from getting them. The only real way it might work is for those particular cards to still be out there on your turn.

Splendor is an awesome game!!! I just got the expansion and only played the strongholds module. With two players works really well. Creats so much tension. It really spice up the base game.

the A points on the cards are to incentivize players to buy them, because in the og game, those cards cost the most with little value, so with these A points you atleast have a chance to snatch an ez 3 points tile

Another top notch Hollywood Squares review. Really liking the dynamic and the variety of viewpoints which add some good depth. The audio on this particular one was a bit muffled and it sounded like someone left their window open but otherwise high marks! :)

I'm not sure Zee (or anyone) realized that the "Time Stone" counts toward your 10-gem limit. (Is that strategically significant? It had better be, because if not, that's a pretty weird decision.)

I think the green chip is a chip because it's included in your 10 chip limit you can have at any given time. As it stands it's set up so that if I buy a top tier card early on it's a bit of a handicap for me the rest of the game because now I can only have 9 other chips the rest of the game. So it helps prevent a player from running away with the lead early on.

I know it’s a splendour thing, but I’m surprised they went with chips instead of actual plastic gems like in Thanos Rising or Century Golem. The gems probably would have brought the price down a bit too.

This reminds me of my Sister, Brother, and myself all arguing about whether Splendor is fun or not lol

Perhaps the Time Stone being a chip is a visual reference to make it obvious to other players that you are in a position to win?

10:20 Interesting. It sounds like no one in Mike's play group went for points first and then trying to pick up their color diversity later (and then only having to pick up what's still missing at the end instead of spreading a wide, inefficient net first).

The diversification doesn’t seem to be too much of a big deal to me. You only need one of each, so you could still focus on a specific color outside of that. However, I have always gone for nobles, so perhaps that is why it doesn’t seem like it would be a problem.

I played Splendor ONCE at a convention and heard there was a Marvel theme. Trying to get it, sounds likes it’s perfect for me. I have like much knowledge of the game and don’t own it. I will give this a try. Excellent review

I don’t have the original Splendor but play it on the iOS app and love it. I think I’m gonna get this and have 2 for 1 as I don’t think there is anything stopping from playing Marvel Splendor with the original rules to 15 ignoring the A tile and the green chips??? Am I right???

In the original you can grab a card and a yellow gem as a wild. Keep it in reserve. Is that not in this version?

First Splendor expansion had some different end conditions (instead of 15 points), maybe this version needs to add more endgame options. Forcing diversifying makes sense in a lightly thematic sense, but does dull the strategy options of the original. In the original, a powerful strategy is to reserve a top row card early for a gold chip, and then work towards collecting 7 of one color to buy it while building up other point cards that synergize with it. You could practically avoid the first row altogether and win the race every time (in 3P/4P games) unless someone else is attuned to the same strategy. In some cases, you could ignore the nobles completely and still win. The Marvel version likely "fixes" this issue but at the expense of putting the game on rails.

I don’t own either one and I do like Marvel, but still not sure which one I want to get. Seems like the artwork is a little distracting in a game where theme doesn’t matter. Also, several comments about not liking the rule changes and the original game having some expansions. Gonna have to look into that and think about this more.

Could you play it with original Splendor rules? I think you could.

Splendor isn't my favorite game, far from it. But it's my wife's favorite and my most played game. This is one of the best gateway games you can play, and as a gamer I always get a fun, light engine builder to play. This version looks ok, I was expecting more from Splendors first retheme.

I love Marvel and I love Splendor but I do not like when an IP is thoughtlessly pasted on a game like this. I'd rather have the original Splendor.

I thought I was gonna love this game. But, the new win conditions ruin it for me. In the original there is like 3 ways to win and any of those ways could be the one to choose. If I get this one I will definitely play with original Splendor rules, first to 15. Otherwise you are just doing the same thing. Original Splendor is 8/10 and this looks like 5/10. But you can always play with original splendor rules.

I might actually get rid of my original Splendor for this edition :)

I think a way to add more “theme” would have been having a “Thanos AI” that can make the players lose.

I'll wait for Marvel Carcassonne. I'm sure that's coming next.

I think I have read that Splendor has a "hole" where you can't win against an experienced player by going for nobles which is clearly the spirit of the game. I think this an attempt to remove that "win with no nobles" strategy, although maybe its too ham-fisted and obvious.

The Renaissance jewel merchant theme of the original was so painfully boring, it was a complete non-starter for my kids, and I never considered buying it. I think it was all the pictures of the plain, samey-looking people in the original that put them off ("Oh, great! The goal is to buy cards with a bunch of bored looking old-timey guys in a hats! How compelling!"). Conversely, they saw the Marvel version at GenCon and immediately wanted to demo it. SOLD! I wish the new game played EXACTLY like the old one, and, yes, the Marvel / Thanos theme isn't perfect, but recruiting superheroes to help fight Thanos at least makes a little sense. Plus, the idea of competing over their favorite Marvel characters, though not a great strategy, makes the game fun for them in ways the old game was not. It's a good enough version of a solid game with a much more attractive theme.

I’ve been thinking about how this game could have been more thematic. Why are players competing with each other to get the Infinity Gauntlet? I posted this idea of splitting players onto either a hero or villain team on BGG. If you’re on the hero team, you would be “recruiting” hero cards or “capturing” villain cards in the gameplay in order to keep the infinity gauntlet out of the villain team’s hands. If someone on the hero team wins, then they win the game as an individual, but another person on the hero team would also celebrate the victory. The good guys won! If you’re on the villain team, you are wanting to “capture” or “defeat” heroes (or gather villains) by collecting the cards. If someone on the villain team wins, they claim the infinity gauntlet for themselves for an individual win, but if there was another player on the villain team, that person could also celebrate a win for the villain’s side!

To answer Tom's Question: Yes, it does matter. The lack of X-Men and Fantastic Four content in broad Marvel games (board, card and video games) has affected whether or not I buy it for most of a decade. Of course, this one is a pass because it's Splendor and I've played enough of it.

Hmm after watching the whole video, i kinda disagree with Roy in his last statement. If you are a Marvel fan and want a light game, play Infinity gauntlet love letter. I know it's not a same game but same level of ease and theme is WAYY more present!

This is my opinion, I dislike the look. Looks like something that comes out of a happy meal.
