Splendor and Century: Spice Road are both market themed competitively driven board games where players race to purchase cards, build an engine and try and use a combination of the right resources to obtain point cards first. Players need to do this in the most efficient and fastest way possible in order to maximise their points.
In this video we aim to compare both board games to see which is more suited to your family board game night or gaming group.

In Splendor, players take on the role of a wealthy merchant looking to invest money in the jewel industry by investing in mines, transportation methods and recruiting the best artisans that can transform those gems into jewels.
In Century: Spice Road, players adopt the role of caravan leaders who travel from town to city along the spice road, trading and exchanging spices to gain renown and reputation.
Both games seek to evoke a similar feeling of gathering resources, paying for cards and racing to gain prestige points. However, Splendor is more about economic efficiency as purchasing developments provides players with future discounts whereas the focus in Century: Spice Road is on deckbuilding and engine building. Building an effective system that allows players to trade for the right combination of spices is this games highlight.

Player interaction is very limited in Century. You can't hinder your opponents from getting the scores if they have collected enough resources which is not in the case of Splendor. That's why we prefer the player score cards face up on shown on the table rather than faced down to gauge the scores of the players. This gives more competitiveness amd player interaction. The depth of gameplay, player interaction, and competitiveness, I say, is a slightly deeper in Splendor in their standard forms. In splendor, to add more engaging play, we implement King of the Hill when a player hits the target of 15 or in longer plays 20-21 points. In this mechanic, the thrill gets tighter as we start calculating accurately our next moves until no one can replace the highest pointed player. This becomes more intense in The Orient expansion since there a oot more options to take. Our King of the Hill mechanic: whoever gets 15 points triggers the end game with that player starting the round. If a player tends to achive points greater than 15, say, 17, the game continues but the round will start with that player (ending with the player with the player on his left) until no one will be able to catch up to him. Anyone can catch up and dethrone the leading player as long as he can get resources and buy points cards, and the decks will be depleted. This is a race to supremacy. We love Splendor very much! :D

5:48 correction the first player who reaches 15 points triggers the last round of the game, once everyone get 1 more turn (besides the player who reached 15 first) the game ends and whoever has the most points win, in a tie the player with the least development cards purchased wins. Loved this comparison review!! humorous and light and still explaining the essence of the games well.

Actually, when someone reaches 15 or more, everyone should have the same amount of turns as that person (so everyone does not get 1 more turn). If you are playing with 3 players, and it's turn 22 let's say, and the "middle/second" player hits 15, only the third player will play after them (and not the first player). Reason is, the first player has already played their 22nd turn, so they would not get another turn.

I totally agree with you 100% ...I was taught Splendor FIRST and loved it then a few years later I was introduced to century spice road and loved it as well but knowing Splendor first helped with the mechanics of Century Spice Road...p.s my pick is splendor too!

I got a copy of Century: Golem Edition and even though I MUCH prefer the theme C:GE and my wife will play it with me, I still think Splendor is better ☺

I like the simplicity of splendor. I like the insert and the almost instant setup and tear down.

I bought splendor because I thought it'd be easier to teach to non gamers and it was also more readily available, people I teach it to go out and by it!

Both very good games but I prefer Century Spice Road. Both games have excellent components.

It has similarities. Splendor is much simpler and focused on the economic engine building.

Splendor is a better game. CSR: The game has drawn comparison to Splendor, but loses to it in many ways. The resource management is less tight, there is less tension because of the Solitaire-ish nature, it feels much more repetitive due to lack of tension, the randomness of how your engine will be and components.
