Dr. Lera talks about splenic hemangiosarcomas in dogs with Winnie, a seven-year-old Lab mix.
Hemangiosarcoma of the spleen, or spleen cancer in dogs, is a cancer that is diagnosed in many canines every year. It is a cancer made up of the cells that line blood vessels, and therefore can be found in any part of the body. However, the most common sites include the spleen, liver and right auricle of the heart. (source: avim.us)

Reading the comments, I didn't realize how many dogs get this. My dog just had surgery on Tuesday for a large mass in his spleen. Spleen was removed and now we're waiting to see if its cancer or not. He was also diagnosed with Cushing, but vet said he's not worried about it because he has no symptoms. I've been a wreck and im praying he'll be ok. Edit: the pathology report came back and its not cancer, thank goodness

@@MP-cc5rv praying for your dog and hopefully he/she will be ok. My dog is doing extremely well, he's almost 14 but acts like a puppy again. Unfortunately, my other dog, they're from the same litter, was just diagnosed with a brain tumor. He can't walk or sit, we're doing everything for him. He seems the same except for not being able to walk and he has a head tilt and his eyes go back and forth sometimes. Its heartbreaking especially after going through the spleen tumor in his brother a few months ago. The vet has had the quality of life talk with me but I don't think it's time. I'm keeping you in my prayers, please update us, when u get the chance and let us know how they're doing.

This just happened to my 13 yo German Shephard/Husky mix Pepper. Yesterday morning she was fine, although she was having episodes of lethargy a couple times a week for a few weeks, but we thought maybe it was the CBD treats we gave her to calm her down during recent bad storms. But by the time the afternoon came around she started acting lethargic again, and by 6 she started have trouble standing. We took her to an emergency vet and within minutes they were able to tell what was wrong with her. She had a tumor that had ruptured and her abdomen was filling up with blood. They told us at that point she was on death's door and we needed to make a decision quickly, so we decided to have her put to sleep. I never thought that when I woke up I would be saying goodbye to one of my best friends. It all just happened so quick and we had no time to prepare, but even though I miss her terribly I know we made the right choice.

Took her to the vet and they said her gums are white and she was internally bleeding so she will need to undergo exploratory surgery to see if its hemangiosarcoma. Had a checkup with full (mostly normal) bloodwork 3 weeks ago. Since then she is acting fearful and strange off and on. Still peeing and pooping, but appetite is low today and she wants to stay outside and is panting a lot. We are taking her to get scanned tomorrow. I'm worried, but this video helped. I lost two of my dogs to hemangio. We put both of them down, although the crises were a couple of years apart. I’m still baffled that my clinic said they are seeing more of these cases than ever. All of my dogs eat a good quality food, and I stopped using fertilizer/herbicide 40 years ago. My Dutch Shepherd was only 10, but her spleen had already ruptured. My Lab was 13+, so she’d already led a good life. The vet offered the option of surgery/chemo, with the proviso that it would only mean an additional few months. I couldn’t put the old girl through it, so we put her down.

My dog Lola has this. This video is giving me goosebumps because when we first adopted Lola from the shelter her name was Winnie. She is 11 going on 12. She has Hemangiosarcoma and it ruptured. I chose surgery and she had the tumor along with her spleen removed. Test results came back as cancer Hemangiosarcoma. What II will tell you all is 7 months ago it started as a benign nodule on her spleen. Had I known what I know now I would have had the vet take it out immediately. Now it’s too late. In a few months my Lola will be gone. I am devastated. Have your dog checked. X-ray or ultrasound. If your vet tells you that something was found on the spleen have them remove it. Don’t listen to them if they tell you that it’s benign or not a priority. My Lola was fine 7 months ago. Now she has Hemangiosarcoma.

Our husky was diagnosed with a splenic mass/sarcoma months ago after he'd have off and on days of not moving at all and with a reduced appetite. We took him to our vet coincidentally when he was having a good day and thats when they discovered the mass. The VERY next day, he went downhill so suddenly we didn't even have time to think about the cost of surgery. He died within an hour from what we can only guess was internal hemorrhaging. It was really really rough on me and my family, but learning about these things is fascinating to me.

We lost our family dog to the rupture of a splenic tumor last Monday, November 23rd. He was just 9 years old! Charles saw the vet 16 days prior and we were going to do blood work and an ultra sound to confirm the tumor existed in his spleen. The female vet we visited also said we'd have a month to two months with Charles. She didn't recommend surgery because she said it may cause more internal damage based on the internal damage she saw from his x-ray! So she prescribed pills to help reduce the inflammation and to help with his arthritis. Charles' health deteriorated in a blink of an eye. He just got worse to the point that he stopped eating, drinking water, peeing, pooping, walking, and breathing well. Before I knew it, he was dead with blood coming out of his mouth from internal bleeding. The most horrific site of my life! I just screamed and I haven't stopped crying! I lost the best friend a person could ever dream to have! Rest in heaven, Charlie Boy!

We just got a diagnosis of metastasized hemangiosarcosis in our 10 and 1/2 year old female Rottweiler. We took her to the vet for a four month Xray of her leg, after TPLO surgery. Her leg has healed beautifully, but when we mentioned her appetite is off (she'd been refusing her food in the am for a couple of weeks) and she had lost 4 pounds, they recommended an Xray of her abdomen. That resulted in a need for an sonogram test to get a better look. She has tumors in her spleen, liver and lungs. The vet said since the cancer has spread, it is aggressive and no treatment can be done. My advice to anyone with an older dog: get the vet to do Xrays and/or sonogram to check for tumore, BEFORE you spend a lot of money on TPLO surgery!

Our 14yr old basset hound suffered his first seizure April 2020 while on a walk. Rushed to vet. Blood work and x-rays appeared normal. There was a teeny bitty non consequential dot. Like a pin prick but nothing was thought of it. He acted 100% normal after. October 9 2020, woke up to find him in an ongoing seizure in the living room. He couldnt come out of it. At all vet said he had internal bleeding, that his spleen had ruptured and did a chain reaction all the way up to his brain to cause the seizure. The pin prick had turned into a tumor that caused the ruptured spleen. He couldnt walk, move, sit up. Nothing. He was lifeless. Had to be moved around on a stretcher. There was nothing we could do except take away his pain and put him to sleep.

What about a tumor/mass on the liver? We rushed our golden retriever to the emergency vet hospital yesterday and after a chest x-ray and an ultrasound the vet said they saw internal bleeding, a large mass on the liver, smaller lesions on the mesentery and some spots on his lungs. With all of that it sounds much more advanced and so we decided not to have surgery and instead love him at home and put him to sleep before he really suffers a lot of pain. Would you treat a liver mass any differently than on the spleen? Would you recommend surgery if you saw other lesions on the mesentery or spots on the lungs in an x-ray? I appreciate the video. Knowledge is so helpful when things are spinning out of control.

My 10 year old German shepherd/cattle dog mix was rushed to ER because of several symptoms. Pale gums, refusing food and wobbly, which happened in a matter of hours. Ultrasound showed bleeding mass on her spleen. Vets walked us through the options and gave a guarded prognosis and steps taken to figure out where she's at. Beyond bleeding spleen and anemic because of that, the bloodwork came back great. With that and the x-rays showing clear around her heart and lungs, we took the chance and opted for surgery to have her spleen removed. During surgery, they found lesions on her liver. Both spleen and a bit of liver lesion tissue is now out for biopsy. Hoping to hear back by Thanksgiving. Hubs and I are aware that the high probability is that its cancerous. That its spread to her liver. And that the surgery may only have given us all a few more months together. If there had been any sign of spreading before surgery, we would have made the heart-rending decision to let her go. It looked like she had a shot though, so we took it. It was heartening to hear you say that given the good option, do the surgery and get the biopsy. In a few days we'll know exactly what we're dealing with and prepare accordingly. Cherish every moment you get with your pups. It all goes so fast. She's home and healing up from surgery. Not happy with being confined to the kennel, but otherwise is herself.

Took her to the park everyday and was at the park on 9/20 playing frisbee her favorite. A few hours after getting home she started acting a little uncomfortable but she did fall asleep when I heard her start to cry went over to her touched her nose it was ice cold her gums were white when I lifted her head it just flopped around I got her to wake up she got up but was so weak she could not make it to the truck I got her to the Emergency Veterinarian she did an ultra sound told me she was bleeding internally and it was probably hemangiosarcoma. I made the very hard decision to put her down I did want her to suffer I didn't want her to be sick and in pain her last days. But I still get mad at myself because maybe it wasn't cancer she could of had surgery and she would still be here with me I guess I will never know just didn't want her to suffer. It has been 2 months yesterday, I just miss her so much.

Hi Kristie: I'm very sorry for your loss. Let me put your mind at ease about the decision you made last September. My 11 1/2 yr old heeler/border-collie mix appeared strong, healthy and happy, and we too played fetch at the park, but 3 days later she was gone. She lost her balance one night, almost fell, which had never happened, so i took her to the ER. She had a mass in her spleen and it had burst. The vet said that it was very likely cancerous (most of them are) and if we did the surgery, she would probably only live 2 to 4 months longer, and only if i got her on chemo every 2 weeks. . She was way too active to be miserable from the surgery and chemo, for her final 2 to 4 months and she would've wondered why i kept taking her to this place that hurt her with needles, etc. She was way too precious for me to keep her alive, just for myself. Her quality of life woild have been terrible so i made the most painful decision of.my life. She had been with me since she was 9.months old and she actually saved my life. So dont beat yourself up over your decision. You did the right thing by your baby. If the hole in your heart needs what only a dog can give, you now have the room to save anothwr one, in your late dog's honor. Thats exactly what i did and the new resscue is laying on my foot, as i write this.. Happy Holiday season.

So very sorry for your loss. I feel the exact same way.Our girl was the same age, in great condition, zero symptoms the night before, but must’ve ruptured in the early morning hours. We saw two vets and both seemed to discourage us against surgery due to the likelihood of it being cancerous and. And I just kept asking but what if it’s not? We ended up putting our baby to sleep but it was the hardest decision of my life. I so wish they could figure out a way to tell if the tumor is cancerous, would end a lot of second guessing and heartbreak.

We just had a splenectomy performed on our 11 year old beagle mix today- blood in the abdomen, transfusion, then spleen removal. He is walking around and going potty 3 hours post-op, so our hopes are high, but we need to wait 3-7 days for path to come back on the spleen as well as some punch biopsies of the liver. More expensive than human medicine, but we had to do everything we could for our favorite child...
@DrLera
@DrLera 7 ай бұрын
Definitely not more expensive than human medicine. If you had to go to the hospital and have a splenectomy and a blood transfusion and liver biopsies I can guarantee you it's going to be more expensive than a veterinarian would charge. The only thing is that normally we have health insurance that helps us cover the cost of the procedure. My wife had a C-section at the hospital and the total charge was I think about 45 to $50,000. But we have insurance. C-section and an animal hospital is probably between 2,000 on the very cheap side to six or seven thousand on the very expensive side. But of course any unexpected expense and I can only imagine that it was probably between 5 to $10,000 to save your dog and give your dog the best chance at survival. hopefully this doesn't come across as rude or short. It's a common misconception that people have. But it's usually not accurate. I have noticed sometimes though where some expenses truly are less expensive like urinalysis or blood work at the urgent Care. But the catch was they charged me $225 for the doctor to literally spend probably about two and a half to 5 minutes with me. At that point I'm happy to charge $225 for 3 to 5 minutes of my time and charge reduced costs on the labs. Again if this does come across as rude instead of informative I will immediately resend my response. That is not what I'm trying to accomplish. Hopefully this helps

Hemangiosarcoma sucks. It took our Rhodesian. His spleen ruptured and he went into cardiac arrest. Just lost our GS on April 1st. Went in for routine exam for his arthritis found a lump. He started bleeding a week later. Did emergency surgery..no luck as the bleeding wouldnt stop. Now just found a mass on our labs spleen. We went to emergency for another issue. This cancer doesn’t give any symptoms until it’s too late. We’re hoping to get a bit more time with our lab.

My 12 year old Coton/Basset mix had no symptoms until he started breathing a little funny. It wasn't even like he was out and out struggling for breath--it just seemed he was slightly wheezy, on and off. Except then, about two days later, he became so lethargic it was very concerning, so we took him to the ER and they diagnosed him with this. He died two days later. It was so fast, it was not just shocking but horrifying. He seemed to be going along fine, as usual--but then in less than a week, he was terminal. I'm not sure that even now I can process how sudden it was. He was such a good boy; it's so incredibly cruel he had to endure this.

Hello I have a question, my dog just got diagnosed with a large splenic mass yesterday. In the sonogram they didn’t see any other masses as far as they could see but there was a little bleeding around the mass. He has episodes where he shakes and throws up bile and he lost a little weight. However most of the time he still acts fairly normal. With the throwing up and diarrhea and weight loss is there still a chance this could be benign? We’re most likely going through with the surgery on Monday.

@Thirsty Lemon I’m sorry to hear that. It’s tough dealing with stuff like this. Unfortunately my dog had a hemangiosarcoma which is one of the more deadly types of cancers that usually start in the spleen. I ended up doing the surgery to remove the tumor, but when they opened him up they found that the cancer was everywhere. It spread to his pancreas, liver, gallbladder, intestines and omentum. The vet was only able to remove some of the tumor, but even though he wasn’t able to remove the whole thing I was able to get another 3 happy months with him, he wasn’t suffering and he was still happy and energetic with the medications and CBD oil I was giving him. The prognosis really depends on what the mass is, and if it’s cancer how far it spread. Some splenic tumors can be benign and if that’s the case all you’d need is the surgery to remove it. Other times It’s cancer and the outlook all depends on what type of cancer it is and how far it spread. Just hope for the best. Good luck to you and your dog, I know it’s tough but try to hang in there and hope for the best

Hello, thank you for this video it was very informative. I have a 16yr old Lhasa who recently got diagnosed with a mass in his spleen. I'm not sure if it's cancer yet we are doing additional testing. He also has a heart murmur which is why I am hesitant to do the surgery. I guess my question is even if we did the surgery and it was successful realistically how much longer would he live with a good quality of life? I'm really torn about what to do as he's otherwise still so happy, healthy, and hungry.
@DrLera
@DrLera 3 жыл бұрын
So the average life expectancy for a lhasa is 12 to 14 years according to google. The amount of time that you would have if you do the surgery would all be dependent on everything else that is going on in the body. If the mass is not cancerous then the next question is what kind of disease is going on with the heart. If the disease of the heart is mild and the blood work is coming back normal one would think that you would have more time than the average Lhasa apso. Unfortunately I can't tell you how much longer your dog would have to live. You're going to have to make a bet and you're going to have to be comfortable with both sides of the bet. one bet is that you do the surgery and you're betting that your dog has a few more years to live and doing the surgery was worth the time and pain. the flip side of that bet is if you're wrong, something will start wearing down in your dog's body somewhere else and that will be the cause of their death shortly after the surgery. The other bet that you would make is that either the tumor is cancerous and or even if you did the surgery something else would start going into failure and so therefore you're betting that putting your dog through the surgery isn't going to be worth the recovery and the discomfort from the surgery for such a short period of time afterwards.as humans we naturally want to have 100% certainty when making decisions. Unfortunately that's not how life is. So you either need to reflect, pray, or meditate. And make the best decision that you can. My own personal opinion if you're telling me that your dog is doing great and that everything else looks healthy on your dog then I would lean in the direction of doing the surgery. That's assuming that your healthcare provider agrees with you and that you're not just blinded by the love for your pet. Hope you find this helpful

My dog died suddenly in March. When she died there was a little bit of blood coming from the genitals. When she died she made a really loud noise that sounded like a siren. Right after that noise there was nothing. At first we thought she was having a nightmare, but then we realized she wasn’t breathing and she had her tongue out. We even tried CPR to try to revive her but it didn’t work. We are not sure if she made that noise before she died or if she made that noise after she died. We believe that she was already dead and the noise was caused by the air leaving her lungs. We don’t know the cause of death and she was behaving normally the night before she died.

I wish we would have known about this a year ago. We lost our 12 y/o dog Wilbur to this in January. He was very far along w/ this condition though, and there were no alarming signs of him being in pain. On a Friday, he was zooming around playing catch me if you can, Saturday he went for grooming and when we picked him up, he could barely walk, but we didn't think anything of it because he had been having some minor joint issues for over a year. Brought him home at 1130am on Saturday from grooming, he did not get up all day, would not eat, would not drink water. Just laid down on his dog bed in the living room and did not move. Tried getting up around dinner time, but kept falling so we thought maybe he fell at grooming and broke something but he wasn't wincing or crying. Slept downstairs that night with him and he never once attempted to go outside for potty (we have a dog door). Sunday morning, he tried to get up with assistance and kept falling back down. Finally able to go outside on his own, but refused food again and this dog was a counter surfer in his younger days so we took him to the vet and they told us he had a tumor on his spleen that ruptured and his abdomen was full of blood, he's going to be suffering in the next 3 days and succumb to this. We decided to put him down because we could not afford the surgery option and he was 12 y/o. Vet advised us that even removing the spleen would probably only give him 6-12 months if it's benign. Fast forward 5 months, this past Saturday, our 2nd dog Powder was put down for this exact same condition. Now, we did try to save Powder using Prednisone and Yunnan Baiyao (chinese herb that helps with clotting because his bloodwork showed no platelets), and we were able to spend an additional week with Powder after diagnosis but unfortunately he succumbed to this on Saturday. Two dogs out of four we put down. We are petrified now that our other two will have this so we changed their food and we're hoping we don't have to go through this again. :(

Sorry for the delayed response. I do find that most patients will have a decreased appetite for the first 12 to 24 hours after surgery depending on patient also there could be some medications that could potentially be causing an upset stomach and a decreased appetite as well. we will just have to wait to find out what the histopathology says on the tumor to find out whether it is a cancerous tumor or not as nodules and the liver sometimes can be benign

My question is why she suffered anemia and died even though her spleen was removed?
@Thebombboom
@Thebombboom Жыл бұрын
Because she had cancer in another place that likely didn't show during her splenic removal. What typically tends to happen is once the main cancer is removed, the secondary tumors begin to grow at a faster rate. If your pup was bleeding before their surgery, the blood probably carried the cancer cells to other organs first, where they implanted and grew.

I wasn't in the right state of mind to ask these kinds of questions during his appointment.

The dog cancer doctor said that you can not tell, no one can ever tell... not with xray not with ultasound and NOT even with surgery if a tumor is Cancerous Or not? That THE ONLY WAY TO DIAGNOSE AS CANCER IS.... you have to do a biopsy on the tumor (or preferably remove entire tumor)> that u remove by surgery. Once it's been removed. Then you have to wait for the surgical report to come back with the labs on it reporting full findings to tell you definitively If it is AND THAT surgery (prOvided IT hasnt spread.to other areas ,organs or even blood or lungs if it hasnt spread and if u got all of it out and it is cancer that it still doesnt necessarily mean its Not going to COME back... there's Absolutely no way to tell if it is cancerous until labs have been done as a biopsy I didn't mean that will take days to a week to get. The result back can find out after the surgery if they survive the surgery. itself. It's also been not said that the average length of lifespan is 1 to 3 months after the surgery. My dog is going to this right now and has been for a year and it is exactly what she has. I've taken her to the vet 5 times now.... She does have a splendic tumor it is bleeding . I am DIY hER and have been for a little over a year with only the aid of some pain pills but seems now to be getting worse and she seems to be feeling worse. I don't expect her to..... anything..... but I want to make her comfortable as possible and I've gone to 4 different drs so far and. I can't didn't give me any more I don't think she's ready yet tho .... some people insist. Oh yes she definitely ready oh you have to have that surgery and you know what she's still alive after a year? the surgery Which is completely invasive cutting him open from Stern to butt practicly only "buys them 1 to 3 months more of life and that their quality life not A QUALITY OF LIFE EITHER . & I've got a year out of mine. That's glory to God and her will be with me. Just saying thank you Jesus. I love to stop when lifestyle and I prayED for more time with her that she is ok 4 the time being i know we all have a season and we all have to pass I've had 8 other animals in my 60 years That I've had to put Down so I I'm quite Familiar with Procedure. And how. It Goes what needs to be. Done but? My little Girl is. is ..... well.... I kind of go by this rule of thumb? When they start having more bad days than good days, it's time..... It's tough.... Worst ever ask me I hate it more than anything. It is the hardest thing to go through this For me is harder than people. And to everyone out there who is going to something bad dramatic? Awful hurtful painful heart written with your pet. I just want to say pray keep faith research to death. All the information you could possibly help check every source possible That's what you're heart tells you to do and be there for them. They need you they'd been there for you.ź😢

I think there's a some data coming out potentially pointing at the spay and neuter of animals by 6 months of age that may have some correlation with this

@@DrLeramy dog just died from this in my arms at the vets. She is a rescue dog who was spayed at a few months old too before i knew she existed. I don’t want to be in this world without her. She was a few months from 14 (she was about 13.7years old). She was my world. My reason for being here. I had her for 11.3 years.

Not ideal to submit your dog to such an invasive surgery. My dog had it for 1.5 years and a decent quality of life. Unfortunately, his tumor ruptured yesterday and he passed away 30 minutes later.

There's data that supports that anywhere between 20 to 40% of these tumors or growths are benign. So if you're able to get it out before it ruptures then I strongly believe it is and it is my opinion that if is worth doing the procedure. Side note if you ask 10 different doctors you'll get 11 different opinions. We have a 16 year old hospital cat who had a liver Mass and his blood work checked out okay kidney and liverwise his ultrasound checked out okay in regards to no evidence of spread of disease anywhere else so we decided to go ahead and remove the mass and give him a chance. He's been doing great now for about 6 months
