A bit of reverse engineering using an Arduino with two Adafruit motor shields driving 4 stepper motors. Flaps are cut from styrene and abs, frame is cut from Perspex: all on a laser cutter.
The Arduino code seeks 4 numbers corresponding to the flap positions sent over the USB serial condition from the laptop via batch files.

I used to really like these on the station platforms - clear, straightforward and easy to understand! I also enjoyed hearing that 'flickering' sound again :-)

Nice! Love the "Welcome... to... Shelvington" that slow-mos through while the rest of the sign is cycling. Must have been a sod to get the timing right.

Absolutely fantastic! We are currently working on reverse engineering the control side of the split flap display from Platform 3 at Haywards Heath.

Used to be fascinated by these displays at main line stations and airports!

I remember being allowed to operate the boards at the local station and presssing the buttons to make the announcements. Fascinating :)

Would you make another, on commission? This looks and sounds fantastic and I quite fancy one on my living room wall!

Hi. I run the Shelvington inbox (hopefully this shows as that) and do the painting/scenics. This would not be practical to try to make more. The mechanism is fairly delicate, the wording for someone else would be entirely different and the estimated cost of parts and time would be around £1000. No one would pay that!

I would definitely pay for one of these or the instructions on how to make one

Additionally Matt would never give away the plans. Without being rude why would he, someone might then produce it commercially. Thanks for the compliment though.

Amazing work! Did you create the entire display?

Hi. I run the Shelvington inbox (hopefully this shows as that) and do the painting/scenics. Yes all of it - involves a laser cutter for the precision of it all, stepper motors and Arduino.

Could you advise what material the rings are across the flaps? Also we’re they bought or made for this project? Assuming they are plastic of some sort?

Hello , great job !!! Sir I just a question , so I am working on controlling the old Split Flap Display in the train station of Oran a city Algeria. the System is made by Bodet ( www.bodet.dz/ )its so similar to the the system you showed here the only difference is the voltage of the motors ( 48 Volts ) and i have 5 modules by one Display and i have 13 Displays in total I am planning to control the 5 motors (2 Bi-Directional Motors / 3 Mono-Directional ) via a relay and an Arduino. is it possible control the motors without a driver ? Please let me know as soon as you see this Thanks for your help
