Thx for your nicely done video. When I sold my previous home in 2005, I just couldn't bear to leave my variegated hostas. So I dug up a couple of them and transplanted them to my new home 12 miles away. Now, 15 yrs later in 2020, I'm going to divide them to fill an expanded bed next to my patio. They will be beautiful there. Hostas are my favorite perennial and do wonderfully here in the Spokane WA area (zone 5 - 6). Best wishes to all my fellow hosta aficionados out there!

This tutorial was wonderful. I like how how you divided the hosta without removing the entire plant. I have quite a few hostas and coral bells I would like divide and arrange nicely in my flower bed. I live in zone 6 and my hostas do not pop up until May so I have to be patient:}

I have so many giant hostas and there are some places in my yard I’d like to fill with them so I’ve been thinking about doing this. In your video you mentioned spring. It is midsummer where I am right now. Would this be a good time to transplant some of my hostas? Or do you recommend I wait until spring time
@Backyardprojectguy11 ай бұрын
Yes you can...But the new plants will not do anything thing for the rest. But you should have a good plant next spring...Good luck with your splitting..

Thanks … I can’t wait to be able to have more vistas in my yard. Planted 3 last year and they doing great this year And I was actually wondering how old or big/small they can be before splitting but ur was about Half size smaller then mine so I’m assuming it would be okay to split. Now just waiting for right time. Thanks bunches 😊😊
@Backyardprojectguy2 жыл бұрын
Splitting them now is OK...But the newly planted part probably won't flower until next year..But give it a go...Good luck with your project..

Mine are heavily compacted and in the sun. What is the easiest way to thin them out because I can barely get anything through (i.e., shovel, etc.)
@Backyardprojectguy Жыл бұрын
Just split them in half with a shovel..add some new soil to the hole that is left..You can transplant the two half that you have if you need them somewhere else in your garden..Hope this helps

@Backyardprojectguy4 жыл бұрын
Your plants will split no problem..But you will not get get much growth out of them this year. Ni flowers on the split and weak flowers on the mother plant..BUT next year you will have two good plants..If you are patient..GO FOR IT...Good luck and have some fun..
@MagzMD20105 жыл бұрын
Will the transplanted hosts grow back the following year?
@Backyardprojectguy5 жыл бұрын
If you split the plant early in the spring the Host plant will grow back no problem...If its later in the year the host plant will stay the same size and recover the next year..Good question..Thanks
@nicklee8065 жыл бұрын
How simple is that!!!
@fredforman3386 Жыл бұрын
nice
@TikkaMasalaa13 жыл бұрын
Whoa major dry soil there, looks like cutting way too close to the root system of old plant. It wont be happy in regrowth, but good Idea to leave the outside planted and fill the back end. That is ideal.
