Henry de Percy was given a licence to crenellate his manor house here in the 14th century, before the family lost the castle twice, first for rebelling against Henry IV, and again after the Percys supported the Lancastrian side during the War of the Roses. When the castle returned to their possession, the Percys had moved their seat to the magnificent Alnwick castle and the ancestral home of the powerful Earls of Northumberland fell into the ruinous castle we see today.

Not that we were able to establish, just a local story associated with the castle
