This video depicts some elderly Arvanites speaking their mother tongue, which is about to become extinct. Arvanitika is spoken or understood by less than 50.000 Greeks (about 0.5% of the total population), most of which are elderly or middle-aged.
The main reason why Arvanitika is no longer widely spoken (even though during the 19th century the percentage of Arvanites in Greece was as high as 10%) is the stark Greek patriotic, if not nationalist, sentiment that has always characterized Arvanites. It led them to abandon their non-Greek tongue for to assimilate to the Greek society.
Arvanitika is an Illyrian language, closely related to Tosk Albanian, and most Tosk Albanians would not have a tough time conversing with Arvanites. Arvanitika is spoken with a near-Greek accent, and even though the grammar and the syntax are purely Albanian, the vocabulary is a mixture of Albanian and Greek words. As far as the writer is concerned, several of the Albanian words used by the Arvanites are considered archaic Albanian and are rarely or no longer in use by modern Albanians.
Even though Arvanites stem from medieval Illyrian* settlers of Greece, they have always identified themselves as Greeks -something undeniable given that a nation is a sociopolitical entity. In most parts of Greece they have intermixed with Greeks so extensively that it is extremely rare to find an Arvaniti who doesn't have partial Greek ancestry.

Not sure what the argument is, Greeks and Albanians have been neighbors for thousands of years, this is a dialect of Albanian spoken in Greece. The original speakers were obviously Albanian but I am sure over the centuries the blood is mixed, in the end who cares. DNA tests would shock most people, no one is who they think they are. Once upon a time, Albanians and Greeks didn't separate themselves from each other. Ancient Greek and old Albanian have many commons, and they come from a common language in the near past. Arvanites are Greeks of Albanian origin. I vanno think how some Arvanites feel ashamed about their origin and refuse being Albanian as their are Greek. Every Arvanite should proudly say "I am Greek of far Arvanite Albanian origin. I am proud being Albanian, of scientifically and historically proved the most ancient peoples in Balkan and Europe together with Basques. Being descendant of Pelasgians, the first people of Balkan, descendant of ancient Illyrians part of them were Epirotes too, later partly Hellenized. Being blood of Alexander the Great mother and grandmother, being blood of Pyrrhus, being blood of George Castrioti Skanderbeg, being blood of Saint Mother Teresa, Pope Clement Albani, Gjin Bua Shpata, blood of Marko Boçari, Elena Gjika D'Istria, Miauli, Kolokotroni, Karaiskakis, Andrutso, Koundrioti, Tzavelas, Bouboulina, George Washington mother etc etc. So our blood and ancestry it's not so brief, we should be so proud being Albanian and you should be so proud being Greek too. As Arvanite scholar and researcher Aristisidis Kollias have said "In my native village when i was young, if you did not speak Arvanitika you would be ridiculed and harassed by friends". So every Arvanite, respect, love and follow your traditions and your language. The language spoken by those who gave indipendence to Greece in 1821. Do you know that Arvanitika or Albanian was the most speaked language in first Greek parliament according to 2 European travelers of that time. A quote from one of them in their book "I was expecting finding here the nephews of Socrates and Leonidas but here all speak Albanian and all speak Albanian, even in their parliament if someone insist speaking Greek others reply in Albanian, the teachers should learn Albanian first to then learn Greek to pupils... ". Something interesting is that no one used the term Arvanite till 1850, they all were called Albanians from all all European travelers and historians, a quote from one of them "Their language, traditions and culture have no difference from Albanians living in Albania and Epirus, clearly they are the same people with no differences." Respect for all Arvanites, from Milano🇦🇱👐💪💪💪

By the way is a fact, one teacher between years 1830-1860 wrote in his document. He can't teach the pupils Greek language because they don't understand nothing, and him self didn't know Albanian language. So he tried to speak in Greek old language, and he was surprise because they understood him. From old Greek language and the help of arvanitas pupils he learned Albanian language, so then he teach the Greek language to arvanitas pupils. The document of him was founded in our days by historian and teacher MARIA EFTHIMIOU. Her videos are even in you tube.

I'm a respectfull man. I know that the Arvanites played a very important role in Greece's independence and also in its politics, culture etc... As such they have the full right to feel Greek and should be proud of it! I hate when Albanians try to deny that, insinuating that Arvanites are only Albanians. This kind of people don't know the difference between nationality, ethnicity, and a linguistic group. As for the language, it clearly is a dialect of Albanian and that should not be denied. I heard many ridiculous theories like it derives from ancient Dorian or it was imposed with force by Albanians during the Ottoman Empire. Denying the origin and the historical facts doesn't make a nation stronger, it makes more fragile. Albanians and Greeks have been together for thousands of years. Political borders do not do justice to our cultural and ethic identity because they are too complex. So the one thing we can get right is to respect one-another, and stop all the bullshit. P.s. I just wished Arbërishtja was preserved better, and had more support institutionally like the Arbëresh dielect in Italy. I would be a pity if It got totally extinct!

@@Pironjani Finally, a non-nationalist comment on a video about Arvanites! Arvanites are an essential part of our nation, just like the Vlachs are. You don't have to stem from Pericles to be a Greek; to love this country and give your life for it if necessary is enough. I find the attempts to prove that Arvanites are 100% descendants of ancient Greeks ridiculous, to say the least (even though Albanians actually have some ancient Greek DNA as a result of the hellenic colonization). They imply that a nationality is defined by racial origins, even though there are countless nations that share common origins and yet hate one another (i.g. Serbs and Croats), and even though that would mean that the Jenissaries were ethnic Greeks. Well, it is equally stupid to claim that Arvanites are Albanians for the same reasons. Nationality is not origins.

What do you mean? All nations are cocktails of races united by sociopolitical background, culture, and/or common enemies. Don't Albanians have Slavic, Greek, and Turkish influences?

well i was born and raised in greece.My mother has arvanitic origin from my grandmother and my grandfather.They both used to speak mostly arvanitika in the village the grew up and they later learned greek.My question is: is someone of arvanitik origin considered part albanian or not?Imma take a dna test anyway but i am confused about that specidically.To be honest,being an albanian in greece isnt considered the best title for someone.

Not exactly. Arvanites have been living in Greece and fought by its side for centuries. Even your great-great grandparents have not even seen Albania during their lifetimes, so how could you be classified as partially Albanian? Still, even if that wasn't the case, Greeks and Albanians are closely related, and your Arvanite/Albanian origin is nothing to be ashamed of.

Arvanitet and Albanians are the same, they just live in different countries and cultures for a very long time. I as an Albanian of Kosovo understand the arvanitika language, which is as Albanian as it can be, with exception some loanwords and way of pronouncing. I did a dna test a few years ago and my results were 60% Greek and the rest Italian and Balkanik origin. Felt astonished 😂

Of course it is nothing to be ashamed of... If Greeks had to adopt our fustanellas and dances and even force that part of Albanian Christian population that fought for their country to lose their own language and deny their roots, it means there is great value there! On the contrary, ungratefulness is shame, even for a whole country!!

Your heritage is Albanian. There's no Arvanite language. It's just Albanian with Greek accent. If you want to be Greek, you can be Greek. Nice people. However, you heritage is Albanian. You are of Illyrian descent. Your ancestors fought for the Greek independence and were a vital part of the formation of the modern Greek state. Be proud of your heritage.

We Albanians are not ALL from the tribe of ALBANI. There were many tribes. All the way to MOREA, POLE PON ASUS./. The are not Albans. ALBANIAN now is used to identify a nation, but Albania itself it's not called ALBANIA, SHQIPERIA. SIPHNIANs of EPERI.

Let's see how many Greek nationalists this comment can attract. I am Arvanite Albanian (and my last name is Meksi), I am so proud to have Albanian roots. Arvanites are Albanian, no matter what. Greece did nothing but backstab us.

LOl how can Arvanites become extinct when there's the Albanian language. Do you people realize Albanian people understand this Arvanita "language"? The people in the video are speaking Albanian with a Greek accent.
@The_Albanski
@The_Albanski Жыл бұрын
Arvanite people will not go extinct but surely they will eventually be assimilated into the Greek population and the identity will become extinct. The language is essentially a dialect of Tosk Albanian but after centuries of development in Peloponnese and yes it will probably go extinct
