Bro, draw this out on a paper with the air hise connected and think about it.... Air gets forced to the bottom of the filter creating rising bubbles forcing nearby water to move with it pulling water through the sponge at a weak level. So all the filth will be on the outside of the sponge.

Thank you for being a one-stop-shop for aquarist's knowledge! This video answered a number of questions I had concerning HOB vs air pump w/sponge filter. I kind of realized the effectiveness of sponge filters after noticing how many professionals I saw on KZfaq videos were using them even in 55-100 gal storage tanks for holding tanks for fish they're selling but was unsure what is a good size for my 10 and 20 gal tanks. @TrafishAquatics

It's called airlift, as the air rises it causes the water to follow behind it, the only way the water can get in is through the sponge so it then follows the air up and out the lift tube

@@TrafishAquatics there are only a couple downsides I can think of. They take up room in the tank which to me is not a big deal and there is no way to run carbon if you ever have to medicate. This problem can be fixed just by doing some extra water changes to remove meds. Not deal breakers by any stretch of the imagination.
@TrafishAquatics
@TrafishAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
Both are valid, however if you do ever plan on running carbon there are sponge filters that have media baskets where you could add and remove media as needed, search powkoo sponge filter on Amazon and it's the green one, very neat design

I love , another advantage of sponge filters vs hang on back is if you were say gone on vacation or whatever, if you have a power outage…. All the hang on backs I had would need primed to get them going again… With if power comes back on your air comes back and all is good

Thanks for your time explaining about the filters. I have been using hang on the back filters for years and have come across the sponge filters on UTube videos. I remember as a kid you had to put the charcoal in the bottom of the clear plastic filter and then on top of that you put the white cotton type filter medium. Nice to know that that model has been improved upon. I have ordered two filters (sponge) for my two 30 gallon tanks which I will be setting back up soon.

@@TrafishAquatics thanks! I just put a(brand new) spongefilter in my 54 liter (24g?) Tank, I didn't like the filter that followed because its freaking big, it has one of them stupid cartridges and the filter besides that is so small. I wanna take it and just go with the spongefilter, but if I do that I will loose the bacteria I have in that, and its a new aqaurium where I'm doing a fish-in cycle (long story short). I can't wrap my head around how to do it, any advice?
@TrafishAquatics
@TrafishAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Let it fully cycle with both filters then just remove the one you don't want and check for the next few days for ammonia spikes, if there's none your good, bacteria can double thier colony in 24 hours if they need to

Hello! Firstly wanted to say I love your videos! They are super informative and I’ve learned so much! I just got a the dual sponge filter for my tank along with the tetra whisper pump and I was reading the instructions for the air pump and it said it should be 12 inches above water level. I was just wondering if that’s actually necessary? And what you do for your tanks? Thanks!
@TrafishAquatics
@TrafishAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Generally the reason for that is so that you don't get a back siphon during a power outage, but as long as you have installed a check valve it's not necessary. personally I don't run the check valves and all of my air pumps rest on the floor and I've never had a back siphon but you're a mileage may vary.

I have a 20 gallon tank with 4 small goldfish which size sponge filter should I get?

@TrafishAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
You can probably get away with using the small sponge filter, That should be able to colonize enough bacteria to keep up with the bio load for those fish, however if you plan on upgrading (I definitely recommend doing this as four goldfish in a 20 gallon is much too small to house them when they're fully grown) and want to transfer the sponge filter to a larger tank when a time comes I would recommend using the large sponge filter that way you can simply just move it to the new tank and be ready to go.

If you cut the hard airline tube out of the center and add a airstone. it works alot better

I have a few questions hopefully you can give me some advice. I've been debating on selling the canister filter that came with a used 75g that I haven't setup yet. The filter is a eheim pro 3 and it takes up nearly all the space under the stand leaving no room for storage and I've noticed the floor of the stand is bowed down from the previous owner using this filter. Thankfully the structure is still okay. I'm thinking I could use a large sponge filter or maybe the large one stacked in the 75 gallon. Would that be enough? It won't be heavily stocked. And it will be a fully planted tank. Right now I have a penguin 375 on my 40 gallon I was also thinking I could use that with the sponge filters when I setup the 75 gallon. Last thing is, can you cycle a new aquarium using only sponge filters? It seems like it would be okay as long as its dosed with dechlorinator. Since I'm already using my hob I wouldn't be able to use it to cycle when I set up the new tank. I have read of using a used sponge from the established aquarium to jump start a new aquarium with the beneficial bacteria. Thank you for your videos I've learned alot.

Trying to figure what topic to talk about first lol. I guess basically we could start with saying you can technically cycle an aquarium without any filters in it at all As long as you have some kind of water movement and surface agitation. Bacteria would be able to colonize on any surface in the aquarium and would be able to establish the nitrogen cycle. The reason we use filters is because bacteria will colonize any surface, so we try to create a large amount of surface area in a small space using items that have very large surface area size versus volume size. That being said sponge filters have extremely high surface area for their size So they are extremely effective at providing good biological filtration capabilities. For a 75 gallon you can run one sponge filter on the far left side if you have an air stone on the right side creating circulation but if you're going to run an air stone I would just recommend a second sponge filter and run one in each back corner. If you're able to use a sponge filter in a pre-established tank for about 2 weeks and then move it to a brand new aquarium you're bringing along any bacterial colonies that are pre-established therefore jump starting the cycle and you're able to add a small bio load right away. I hope that all makes sense if you have any questions feel free to ask

Thank you so much for the video! I have a 15 gallon tank with 4 baby oranda goldfish in. When they get larger they evently go in my sisters pond. I have a sponge filter and hang on the back filter both running. Do I need both or would the sponge filter be enough?
@TrafishAquatics
@TrafishAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
For a 15 gallon I would definitely keep running both as goldfish generally have a very high bio load so the more filtration you have the better, also do your best to keep nitrate readings under 40ppm to keep them happy and healthy!

Can you use this in conjuction with a tank filter system? I need to repair my tank that I want to be prepared if it takes a couple days. I don't want my fish miserable, but after I'm done I'm thinking about leaving the sponge filter in. I've got a 55 gallon tall cube so movement and cycling are extremely necessary

I’m setting up a tall 12x12x24 14 gal aquarium for neocaridina, so would a small sponge filter be enough for this tank? I am worried that the height is going to be a problem in the filtration, because the shrimp don’t do great w heavy current. Any recommendations for the type of filtration I should run?

Yeah that should do good so shrimp don't have any enormous bioload, If you check the description of my video there's a link down there for a 10 gallon one and I use that one in tanks up to 20 gallons with no problem
