Hey! If you don't wanna hear me drone on about different types of advertising and what actually consists of a sponsored video, you can skip to 4:44 where I begin talking about how it affects Booktube :)
I also want to clarify that this is in NO WAY directed at any specific people in our community or on KZfaq in general. The HONEST reason behind this video is that I've seen a lot of people complaining that BookTubers only create sponsored videos (which again, is not true) and I wanted to help clarify for those of you who might be a little confused as well! My main point on how it plays into BookTube is that this is a POSITIVE thing that has been brought into our community and I'm happy for everyone that gets these opportunities :)

There are some youtubers I watch who make sponsored videos very openly and naturally. And I'm happy for them that they're able to make genuine content and get monetary compensation for their work! But I also get REALLY frustrated with some people who make a ton of sponsored videos and you can tell that they're overhyping a product they don't care that much about, or make it seem like it's not a paid video when it is. And I really agree with your comment about the importance of people choosing sponsorship deals that are aligned with the content of their channel.

I don't make content on KZfaq, but as a viewer, it personally doesn't bother me when people do sponsored videos on products unrelated to their typical content. It takes me no effort to skip a video if it doesn't sound interesting.

This is such a great discussion! I've never had very negative opinions on sponsored videos because like you said, I trust the creators that I watch. Also THANK YOU for pointing out the difference between sponsored videos and companies sending products for review. I've done unboxings and reviewed products for companies on my channel, but I've never made a sponsored video, and people still ask me if a video was sponsored even when I mention that it was not. Again, wonderful video Emma! ☺️☺️

you should do a fashion one! make your youtube videos about anything. if one person doesn't like the video but 10 do its a major opportunity. i completely understand what you mean by holding it from your viewers which is very important and its great that you think so highly of that!

This was so informative Emma, thank you for making it! I totally agree with you about sponsored videos, I'm happy to watch them if I'm interested in the content and obviously if it's a youtuber that I love of course I want them to have all the help they can get :) They deserve to be rewarded and given the opportunity to grow as a content creator. I never really thought about youtubers who do sponsored videos on things unrelated to their channel but now that you point it out, those are the kind of videos I tend to skip over and if they do it allllll the time I may lose interest in them altogether. Excellent points xx

This is such an awesome video, Emma! I totally hear you, girl! I have the same sort of problems on my dog blog when I do reviews. Hardly any of them are sponsored but I get sent product in exchange for an honest opinion. So many people complain about sponsored stuff.. I don't even do them very often. LOL I wish more people understood the terms and stuff.

As long as your honest to yourself and your viewers I don't care if your videos are mainly sponsored or not, honesty is whats more important. This community and I think all yt channels are a way of interaction and communicating between viewers and creators. And as you wouldn't lie about something being good when it's really not to your friends, you shouldn't lie about things to your viewers either, that's juts my opinions tho. Have fun at BEA and BookCon, awesome video!

Thank you so much for the clarification. I have noticed some of the "accusational" videos floating around and was curious about what was going on. I really appreciate that you took the time to clarify the differences between sponsored videos and videos where you discuss specific books you've received for review. (and that you researched it!) I see no issue with sponsored videos as long as the person states that it's sponsored. The viewer can opt out if they don't want to support that content.

Definitely feel like a lot of people need to watch this, so great job explaining things so well. :) I think 99.9% of the reason booktube viewers get confused about what is sponsored/what is not is because the content creators aren't stating in their videos that the videos are being sponsored. I think a lot of the confusion comes down with the phrasing in the video and then the lack of statement in the description of the video. Then the confusion starts and viewers feel a dishonesty from the booktuber. At least, that's what I've just seen around the watering hole at this point xD
@emmmabooks
@emmmabooks 8 жыл бұрын
+gingerreadslainey thanks lainey!!!! yes i've noticed a lot of creators not explaining that something is sponsored and just leaving a quick "thanks for sponsoring this video!" in the description which definitely isn't clear to viewers, ESPECIALLY ones just entering the community who don't really understand how sponsorship and whatnot work i totally agree! a lot of it definitely is rooted in confusion that may stem from the booktuber either not being honest or not taking up all the responsibilities to be clear to their audience XD

This as an awesome video! My only problem with sponsored videos is exactly what you spoke about in this video, those people that don't disclose or it seems like they are lying about a product, I haven't actually haven't seen this in Booktube really thank goodness. I've had some weird requests for talking about apps that were sponsored, and it seemed suss, but it also wasn't book related, so I of course turned them down. As a viewer I would feel weird watching someone do a sponsored video about something they don't generally talk about, so as a content creator I would never do that. Again, awesome discussion!!

I found your channel randomly through other booktuber's recent bookcon videos and I'm so glad I did. YOu have great content and earned yourself a new subscriber. This was a great video to clear the area for viewers. As a booktuber myself, I've never been given free merch, books, or been paid for sponsored content so I was always curious about how it worked. Not going to lie, I used to not enjoy sponsored content because it didn't seem like someone's genuine opinion but when you put it in this perspective, it totally makes sense :-)

Thanks for the video and the explanation of each of those terms. I've never had a problem with people who are sent products in exchange for an honest review - there are lots of services/companies that do that, and as long as you don't let the fact that the product was sent to you for free sway your opinion, it's not a big deal. When I've done the same, for example, winning a book from the Goodreads First Reads program, or offering to be a review reader for a new indie author, I try to take the point of view of someone who had to pay full price and really consider what kind of value the item provides for that price. As for sponsored content, I share your opinion - it can be a positive thing as long as the person is upfront about it, honest in their opinions, and it makes sense for their established style/format/focus.

I was so glad to see you made a discussion about this topic because literally a few days ago I found some recommended videos about BookTube culture and a lot of them said they can't trust sponsored BookTube videos, pointing fingers at the more well known BookTube content creators. I wish more people would do a little research and think about it more because as long as someone is being genuine about what they're advertising on their channel, it's good for them and their viewers and I see no problem with it. I really like your discussions and this is so relevant and important for the creators and viewers of our community.

I don't mind sponsored videos at all unless it changes the approach by the youtuber. When suddenly all of the reviews are sponsored (not just books) and your reviews are always positive and you never have criticisms anymore I start to question your authenticity. Luckily I have found in the book community most youtubers have found a nice balance and remain authentic... I think booktube as whole is full of youtubers with great integrity :) This was a great discussion video 😘

+counting the pages i totally agree!! i think it's totally fine to love all the books you read and products you show in your videos, but it eventually CAN reach a point where it's obviously false. i think booktube is definitely one of the better youtube communities when it comes to sponsorship and i'm so happy to be a part of it!

I have honestly never been bothered by sponsored videos. It honestly makes me happy that it's possible for people to make money out of booktube; it's keeps the community running. I think I don't ever had any trouble with sponsored videos on booktube because I feel like all booktubes (at least the ones i watch) are very honest and share honest opinions. I don't ever feel like there are booktubers that are doing a lot of stuff just to get money. All booktubes I watch are passionate about the stuff they talk about and make videos they seem to be wanting to make. So I see absolutely no reason to be bothered by sponsored videos. I also think this is because I want to become an author and seeing that there are so many effective ways to promote books makes me happy. :)

I'm so glad you made this video! And I totally agree with you. Sponsorships are a great opportunity for creators, viewers, and sponsors to do something greater than they could do on their own, but they need to be handled wisely. I haven't gotten to the point where sponsors want me, but I recently turned down a book from an author because it wasn't the type of book I read or enjoy. Creators should take pride and in their content and not sell out for a few bucks. Also, I feel like knowing who you are as a creator and saying no to opportunities that don't fit you opens you up to better partnerships and makes you a more valued asset to sponsors. If you are a known horror reviewer, for example (the complete opposite of me!), you're going to be really good at that particular kind of review and able to make links to similar books. The content you'd produce for that sponsor would be way better than something I would do, which benefits you and the sponsor, and makes a continued partnership between you two more likely.

It's very cool how you made it super clear for the viewer to differentiate the types of "sponsorships". I appreciate that. Personally, I believe sponsored videos are fine. If you get the chance to work with a brand/company you love, it's even better and it will shine through and make the video more natural. The only time I don't like sponsored videos is when I feel like I'm being used or I'm lied to by someone of whom I respect their content. But other than that I get it, youtubers need money to build and make their channels better and that's understandable :)

I think that this is really interesting concept, because I never really judge a video by it being "sponsored". I really don't mind if someone says it's sponsored but I don't like the dishonesty. If it's just a sly slip in the description that the video is sponsored that causes distrust because how do you know if a video's content is really genuine. I love when other Booktubers are able to work with companies to share their input as long as they are honest! I totally appreciate your last statement since one of my booktube friends and I were talking about how you have to be picky about who you agree to work with! Great video Emma! I think it's very cool that you make videos like that, from time to time, to clear up some misunderstanding. I have nothing against sponsored videos, as long as I know that people ale genuine about their opinion. I mean, if someone recommends me a great book, that I will enjoy very much, the fact that the company send this book to them doesn't really matter. As long as the opinion is honest. And I agree about the consistency. It really shows when you say something that you believe in and when you just say it to get money. I like your channel, because I always feel like you are honest, not just throwing commercials in my face.

Thanks for making this video and for actually providing your viewers with a clarification to how sponsorships work. It's so confusing! But what I still don't really get is how can a video be sponsored in parts... And if this is the case in a video do you have to clarify what part is actually sponsored?
@emmmabooks
@emmmabooks 8 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge if a BookTuber says "sponsored in part by...." it means they are either being sponsored by multiple companies to make the video, or else I think it can be taken as only a specific part of the video is sponsored, like the first 30 seconds-a minute instead of the full video.

I agree I absolutely hate when the sponsorship is something completely unrelated to anything they have ever done or mentioned before. Like that game app that is going around. That's fine if you play games and take about it. But if you have never mentioned games on your channel and you take that sponsorship and talk all about it and how much you love it I cant help but roll my eyes.

This was extremely informative. Sometimes sponsored videos bother me, especially with the beauty gurus. I feel like sometimes some KZfaqr's, when they post sponsored videos the videos aren't as authentic as their non sponsored videos. Also I would love to see you do a video on NetGalley if you use it!!

+av8tor1988 i'm glad to hear you got some info out of it! yes i think with some sponsored videos they can be less authentic than normal editorial content. if someone has the opportunity to make it a little more special and entertaining for the audience, i think it would really contribute to the viewer's experience :)

+emmmabooks Exactly. A lot of times I find some sponsored videos boring, this is more with the beauty gurus. It's like they're making a video just for the sake of making a video because they were paid to do it.

I don't mind sponsored videos either! As a youtuber, I'd love to eventually be able to make some money off my channel so that I can put more into it (equipment etc). I'm totally supportive of people who are able to do this, because I know if I had the opportunity to take sponsorships, I probably would. What really annoys me, however, is when the sponsored content has nothing to do with the rest of the video. I don't mind if someone makes a separate video about a teeth whitener or something, because then I don't have to watch it if it doesn't interest me. But if they throw the sponsored content about a teeth whitener in a video that's a book review or something else unrelated, that's when I get annoyed. There's a movie review channel I like to watch, but often before they get into the review they'll say "this video is sponsored by whatever," and give the audience info on the product, but it has nothing to do with the movie they're talking about in the review. Drives me crazy lol.
@emmmabooks

+Abigail D that's very true! i can totally see why that would upset you and it would upset me too hahah but yes we do all have the ability to not watch sponsored videos when they don't interest us, though i think a lot of the frustration with those types of videos is that the sponsorship aspect isn't exactly clear at first ex. if a booktuber uploads a fashion video i might be like "oooooh what's this!" but at the end of the video find out it's sponsored by a clothing company i'll be like "ohh i see what happened here"
@AbigailD23
@AbigailD23 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a good point too! Some youtubers (mainly beauty youtubers from what I've seen) will put in the title/first line of description that the video is sponsored. But sometimes it's not super clear, and that can really lead to frustration. I'd rather find out at the beginning of a video if it was sponsored instead of at the end, especially if the content was totally different from what the person usually puts out (like a booktuber doing a fashion video).

This needed to be said! I just quickly want to mention that I used to think ''so what if you're not being paid, you're still receiving free stuff'' but I now can see that's a totally unjust way of thinking! So what if you receive a book for free, it's not going to have more power over someone liking the book than if they were actually getting paid to say that... If you get what I mean? So, I'm glad I don't feel like that anymore! ^^ (Gosh, I hope that wasn't confusing to read, haha). I see a lot of booktubers getting slated for showing books that had been sent to them when they, and you too, clearly say they are not being paid for making the video! It upsets me when people misunderstands and causes negativity on an otherwise wonderful community! Hopefully this video will educate misinformed viewers! :3

I think it's awesome that Booktubers have the opportunity to make money off of KZfaq, I just don't like when I can't tell what is sponsored content and what is completely their own content. Sometimes people are vague about it and I can't tell which books in a haul they're being paid to promote and which books were just sent to them or which books they chose themselves.

I personally do not bother me the sponsor video, because creating content for subscribers is a waste of time, energy,etc.and so therefore I do not feel bad that they receive payment for it unless they are not honest, for example if a publisher send them a book and pay them for show and they did not like the book and that they did like it, that seems wrong, other than that I have no problems with this kind of videos. ( sorry if something is misspelled, I'm still learning English.) greetings from Chile, i love your videos and I love that you make this kind of videos, because they are topics interesting and important to discuss. c:

+emmmabooks Exactly. Of course as content creators, we all have the choice to make the videos we want to be making, but I personally believe you should be more focused on also making your viewers happy, since they are the ones watching. That said, if any content creator wants to do a bunch of random sponsored videos, then by all means do that, but that doesn't mean you'll keep your viewers.

thank you thank you thank you for all the clarifications! I totally agree with your "controversial opinion" on not making videos that don't pertain to your channel and its "message". I follow many groups on KZfaq including, boviously BookTube, but I also dabble in Fashion and Makeup Gurus and lifestyle vlogs! And while I love all these topics individually, I don't like when they mix and the KZfaqr's opinions don't seem genuine. I have found BookTubers that have been sent clothes from chinese wholesalers to review on their channel and I just found those videos off putting because sure I like clothing hauls but your interest in the clothes was lackluster and it was clear the video was rushed and simply for money. I unsubscribed. And it saddens me because I like the videos some people produce but then sponsored videos that have nothing to do with what I thought was this KZfaqr's interests really make me second guess their motives for being on KZfaq. I really enjoyed your thoughts and video because it definitely touched on a lot of my opinions as well! Thank you and love you!!!

Booktuber Jen Cambell spoke on this issue also. Some things are grey rather than black or white. The issue of corporate involvement & influence on booktube is very relevant & is never going to go away. Some booktubers use patreon to get more $$. Not many. Some booktubers are just sponsored generally but not by authors or publishers. Again not many. A site like socialblade will tell you who if you put in enough individual channel names. These channels are just part of an umbrella group of youtubers. Another way to get $$. If you find booktuber(s) who break ethical rules, you can unsubscribe (if you were subscribed) & also not watch their videos. But would you call them out & say to your viewers: channel(s) I'm mntning now are compromised & indeed bad news?

Friendly opinion sharing: I support sponsored content as well, I recognize that it is a great way for KZfaqrs to improve and to earn money. Where I run into issues with it is when there are so many videos posted to a channel that were created solely because of a sponsorship and it seems like it's even a chore for the creator. I have been subscribed to a few KZfaqrs, not even specifically BookTubers, who when I first started watching had so many great original ideas and fun things to talk about and it seemed they lost their passion for the money. I think it all has to do with what you said about the advertising that blends into their normal content instead of it popping up in your subscription feed and thinking "This is a strange thing for this person to be posting"

+Thuto Kgengwenyane i think that unease is SUPER common in a lot of viewers, but in my opinon, it boils down to how much you trust the youtuber them-self. i know that i trust all of the booktubers i currently watch to tell me if they actually like a book or not, and i don't think money would affect that, at least for my friends and favorite booktubers :)

Yes....I usually do trust a book tuber if they have sort of the same reading tastes as I do and whether I like the books they recommend and to be honest a lot of the books I own and love where actually ones I bought just because a book tuber recommended it. +Thuto Kgengwenyane it can vary depending on how long the video is, how much the company is able to put into marketing, the amount of effort put into the video, and i would think your following also plays a part. i've never discussed how much people make for sponsored videos on booktube, but potentially one youtuber could make $100 whereas someone with a much larger following could potentially make thousands. again, not totally sure on that last part, but there are a lot of different factors! it's definitely a little confusing to grasp hahaha

+sierrareads for the purpose of the video, i'm using the working definition of sponsor being "to provide funds for" meaning monetary compensation. there are quite a few definitions of the word "sponsor" (i mean technically a sponsor could also essentially mean someone providing merely help and support), so there are various forms of "sponsorship" that don't equate to money, but the videos i'm talking about as the ones where people receive funds in order to produce a video in contracts for videos where i've received money, it states that i must disclose it was officially "sponsored" whereas in unboxings sent by companies and videos like the one i did with redbubble, the guidelines state that i only must state that i was sent the items so that's part of the information i went with for the video
