Probably already mentioned in the comments, but, the alter in the church, The Green Man on one side, Sheela Na Gig on the other side. I think that adds even more complicated folk/symbolic possibilities. But, also the more straight-forward woman in the world of MEN angle is ever-present. Also, and I haven't quite worked this one out, so it's a bit of a stretch, but, she does the echo chant thing in the tunnel. Of course, tunnel is very common archetypal feminine/birth symbolism. So it's almost like she conjures (unintentionally) this creepy man-baby, who then walks out of the tunnel (birthed) only to plague her in all it's forms. A stretch, don't know quite how it fits into things, but it's a thought.
@dreadpiraterobertsnumba5
@dreadpiraterobertsnumba5 3 ай бұрын
The simple answer (assuming you remember this from a year ago) is that it's all in le head and is a result of the main character's relationship trauma forcing her to see EVERY man she comes into contact with through a filter, and assuming the worst out of them. This is NOT a movie about all men being awful, but rather a woman who thinks this because of her trauma from abuse from her horrible husband.

15:25 I think where the film missed a trick was not providing an explanation of the lore (in this case paganism of the British Isles). A lot of churches were built over the original pagan sights, hence why a lot of the imagery remained intact. This could have been touched upon during the first scene with the local vicar and probably helped the audience out.

This movie was strange. Like when it was over, I didn't know how to feel. Then over the following week, as I digested the experience and the themes and thought about it and the metaphors, I started to understand and appreciate it more. I think the greenman imagery was a bit extra and not necessary, but I almost wonder if it was picked as a male image of birth in the ideas of men birthing the problematic habits and mindsets that other men absorb from their society.

My first thought about the birthing scene was that it was about how men perpetuate their own toxic cycle, fathers teach their sons, and enable their friends to continue dangerous behavior towards women (or other people who aren't masculine presenting). That cycle was ultimately what also drove her husband to say and do the things he did, which is why he showed up at the very end. I could be way off, but that was how I saw it.
@artlesscalamity
@artlesscalamity 6 ай бұрын
Yeah I think you’ve got it, and actually it goes even further, with the Green Man symbolizing the beginning of the cycle, showing how it’s quite ancient

I think it has more to do with the main character just recreating the same negative views of men, all leading to it being thanks to her abusive husband forcing her to see all men in the same bad way. This is not a movie about men being bad, but rather a woman getting over her own preconceptions of men being bad that were all born from one person.

Me as well! I realize she was somewhat in a trance, but on some level, Harper wanted to trust and embrace this otherworldly man. He showed his true colors within seconds and tried to hurt her! She showed no mercy when she knew without an inkling of doubt what his motives were.

Although the final 20 mins were very unpleasant to watch and I was sort of willing it to finish... Overall I liked it. On a scare level, it definitely scared me. As a woman, the idea of seeing a random man (in particular naked!!) turn up stalking me in my garden or in a forest or whatever, is pure terrifying and not inconceivable by any stretch (most women I know have had at some point in their life an affront with a man in public exposing themselves). I actually closed my back door whilst watching this despite it being very hot 😂 I liked the imagery of the green man (did not know anything about this folklore before watching. And finally, I really loved the tunnel echo scene and how later on that plays as the background music...

I was surprised it was only rated 15 here in the UK after seeing it. It has been called folk horror over here and the green man inclusion is probably the main reason for that. I'm OK with that label as I like folk horror and I like this. It is an uncomfortable watch at times. A couple did walk out at the screening I attended. So I can definitely see why it polarises opinions, but I love the scenery, imagery and green Man stuff. The effects are fantastic. I saw it and Dashcam very close together. Both were poorly attended and had people walk out. But I enjoyed them both.

This video is not new obviously, but I liked it a lot. This is a perfect example of why IMDb score shouldn't be taken seriously. I agree with on your thoughts for the most part. I'm glad you mentioned IMDb too. People have their opinions and not every movie is perfect like you say, but I get so annoyed when people think because they don't like a movie that it sucks.

I’m glad to find an enthusiastic positive review. So much of the discourse (esp. on Letterboxd) is negative and off-base. I loved the movie, it had Garland’s trademark cosmic-horror dread while also making a point about cyclical misogyny (as old as civilization itself) through the process of Harper battling her nightmares and finding peace. I appreciated that the movie went for visceral feelings rather than too much “intellectual” cleverness. Some really memorable imagery, great performances, and good sound design too.

Great commentary. I liked it quite a bit. It was quite gory, which I liked because I didn't expect it. I can see how people can be put off by the film because the first half feels like a normal literal narrative and the second half is so interpretative (some reviewers using the expression "off the rails"). It's not really a monster or creature film. The same way some people think Annihilation is about an alien invasion, some viewers will be left expecting some closure. Of course it doesn't have a satisfying closure because it's illustrating an issue that is ongoing. I believe on second viewing more pieces will fall into place.

It had a lot of promise and had it been fleshed out it could have been great. Ultimately though its a half baked story at best. I'd have rather they left it completely ambiguous as to the origins of what is happening here. Instead they lean into a vague folklore that should have been explained fully if it was to be introduced. It really could have played up the gaslighting and anxiety but as the third act rolls around I was as ambivalent as our protagonist was to the grotesque body horrors unfolding. There was a great premise here but it really fails to deliver anything genuinely scary or memorable.

@kaycuz9402
@kaycuz9402 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Emma! To me it felt too vague. Like if they were going to take the time to introduce the folklore I'd have rather they fully embraced it / explained it or left it entirely open for interpretation as this weird cosmic thing. But we get some shots of the stone man/woman carvings and it was like they thought okay that covers it. It felt kinda tacked on. This movie had many missed opertunities. I was on board at first and was hoping it would reach Repulsion levels of delirium and paranoia but it kinda stalls out at every turn. Visually it's a beautiful film and that scene in the tunnel was amazing but it never reaches that again and the ending was just way too "what the fuck" compared to the rest imo.

I saw it this earlier in the month for an advanced screening. While I can see why people are polarized by its strangeness and approach, I only felt a little empty that after an interesting climax, there wasn't much of a resolution. Spoilers below: I wanted her to just hit her husband with an axe and put him out of her misery. I also saw a review that made her feel like she was sleepwalking and not reacting, but given all the pain and toxicity she's been through, it was more like she was just resigned to the Men's clingy nature and couldn't be bothered anymore. The fact that ends on a happy kind of note without catharsis disappointed me, but I was on board for everything else. I'd give it an 8.

Your comment got me thinking… if you take the ending as a sort of reveal that her best friend was pregnant, and she’s showing up to a house and see the blood stains from the creature… what if the experience was a sort of dreamlike mental PTSD type thing… and she ended up actually killing the Air BnB host. Probably wouldn't agree that you need prior knowledge to understand I'm Thinking Of Ending Things because I feel like I clued in to that film really well on my first viewing and only had my suspicions confirmed talking about it with others after. But it is interesting in both those films how because they're so ambiguous they invite wild and varied interpretations and I think that's a part of the goal of them too.

The theme that stuck out to me the most was guilt, and carrying the weight of something tragic because the finger of blame was incorrectly pointed at the main character. I thought the title “Men” was a bit of a red herring. There were many “toxic masculinity” moments though, so idk. What do I know. Idk anything. Whatever.I liked it a lot, and everyone’s interpretation seems to be a bit different.

I’m so impressed with your first impressions. Off the cuff brilliance. I loved Men. It was so unapologetically A24 and Garland. Soundtrack and cinematography were perfect. And the title is perfect for the movie they made… but I still hate it (the title). The feeling I’m left with is simply a critique on the nature of Man. But it just feels one dimensional somehow. Probably on purpose. Maybe I’m guarded. Maybe that’s the point of the title. (Of course it is). 8/10 with LOTS more to say about this one. Too bad I’m so late to the party!

Well the caps and three comments in a row saying how I’m wrong for not saying something I give warnings about twice in the video… does feel a little harsh. I didn’t put spoiler free in the title, you should look for that on reviews. Also I didn’t say anything that you would understand if you haven’t seen the film, I warn you twice in this video please don’t yell at me.

Wow great review, first of all. Happy Married Life Emma, come to the Men review, I saw the movie, u said dis movie was slow, while I was watching the movie, I slept off. It's totally worth it except the climax part. I didn't get the climax part of the movie, those men appeared in different form whether she was hallucination. After finished the movie, I came to ur video, I knew I would get some answers. First thing, she ate the apple, u said her character compared to Eve, so she can't move out of the place. Some scenes are worth it, especially that tunnel scene n gud background music. One thing I want to ensure it. At the end of this movie, something is bothering. There are some disturbing movies, once u saw those kind of disturbing movie, trust me u can't rid in the head. Men is not in those category but something is bothering.

I really liked the movie, and I really liked your review of it. My hair stood on end when I saw the later with the green man on it. Especially because it's a kind of pagan symbol which is allowed to be on the exterior of churches, but I"m pretty sure it's forbidden inside. Especially as an alter, and then when you see the back of the alter........ 😱😱😱😱😱😱

I think those are consistently some of your best. I like A24 movies and am definitely looking forward to seeing this one. I’ll let you know what my views are and thank you for sharing yours Emma.✌️

SPOILERS AHEAD--I looove folk horror! Not everyone does but i will forgive a lot for one ( like bad CGI) Love Green Man in folklore because he’s unpredictable like nature. So for me this was about the Nature of Men and how they can be taught to view women. Even the selfish act at the beginning ( the reasons given) put a brutal undeserved responsibility on the female character. OK the end. Well , lets just say it felt out of place for me , but , i get the metaphor and it’s definitely not forgettable;)

A bit late, but I loved this movie. I find that most negative reviews come from men who either don't iunderstand the issues women face or who feel the movie is saying all men are born evil and that's it, which I don't think was the messa ge at all. On a fun side note, apparently the final scene was inspired by Garland's watching Attack on Titan and being impressed with the titan's visceral depictions
@Islington17
@Islington17 2 жыл бұрын
I totally loved this and even waited some time to see it cause it's some of his most divisive work so far it seems. I truly love Alex Garland and this was no different. *Spoiler* I saw it as the perpetual cycle of birthing misogyny, toxic masculinity through repetitive desperation. Regardless how many new men were birthed, they were all still fundamentally flawed and continued that cycle. The whole thing with James telling her at the end "I just want you to love me" shows just how selfish, toxic, and unable to take accountability even after all of that. Beautiful imagery too. Also, I feel like heavy handedness is necessary sometimes for important topics like toxic masculinity, patriarchy, fragile male ego stuff. I think if it's too subtle, then it gets criticized anyway so there's never any winning. I say fuck it and burn the patriarchy down. This movie was brilliant.

I really liked the movie but the end left me feeling less invested. Kinda curious on your opinion as someone who loved it. See for me it built a really engaging back story with her husband and the "men" definitely was a unique concept. Then towards the end she started just doing random things that pulled me out of the experience and slowly made me realize worrying about this character isn't really important. Almost like it straddled the line between symbolic and serious in a way that cheapened the serious part. Like her going back outside into the flickering lights after being attacked to watch goeffry or inhaling a seed and going into a temporary stupor. She constantly weaved between being in fight or fight mode and looking like she was on acid without the right cues for me to understand why. Then by the end the whole birthing cycle had kinda numbed me to what might have been an otherwise shocking entrance from her husband. The acting was phenomenal and I loved most the movie so don't think it was all bad for me but I couldn't help see if you felt your connection to the movie drop towards the end.
