@@thewildnath Well, honestly though, none of the colonizing settlers had any imagination whatsoever: New Amsterdam, New York, New England, New Spain/Mexico, New South Wales, Nova Scotia. If they weren't named after other places they were generally named after monarchs and benefactors.

@@warrcoww6717 Canal street is actually a different canal pretty far north of Wall St. The canal on this map is Broad St today. I do think you're right that the canal still exists under the street, though. Also fun, the large street at the top is Broadway, which is also pretty famous.

That fort on the very south tip of New York was called "Fort Amsterdam" 🙂 After the British lost the US Revolutionary War and US troops occupied New York, they decided to demolish the fort. The site is now Battery Park.

For those curious, he was really not far off with that translation. The river actually means river of silver, but plata=silver while plato=plate in Spanish. So he would have been correct if it were río del plato instead of río de la plata. Edit: apparently it really is called the River Plate. Despite it also meaning the river of silver in Spanish. See my later comment.

Dont know if someone else mentioned it before but, the map of New York dates back to when the Dutch owned the city and this wall that they built to fend of enemies, was then demolished when the city was sold to the US. On the place of the wall a street was created, which took the name Wall Street.

New York was easy - the big wall on the right was built by the Dutch to keep people out, it was knocked down but it's route still exists - Wall Street.

To be correct, it wasn't New York City, it was Nieuw Amsterdam... They just dated the map 1665 instead of 1660 to make it NYC: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castello_Plan

I ran out of time, but given a second chance I got all but Buenos Aires. The NY one was tricky, but the fort and the wall helped. The lower end of Manhattan is called the Battery and Wall Street is named after that wall.

You can see the wall at the end at New york/New Amsterdam and that is Wall street of course. And the wide main road is broad way. All translated from dutch direcly so it used to be wallen straat and brede weg. And no it was not traded for Suriname unlike popular believe.

that's clearly a tip of long island, so it's oriented correctly. NYC is basically the only big city that was on an island, and considering it's 1665 im not sure how you didnt get that one

honestly New York and Mecca were easier then some that you guessed. The shape for New York is quite obvious, and the big green space in Mecca with a square box in the middle is also a good hint.

The european style fortress in New York is because of that time it was in the hand of the Netherlands, I'm not sure if it was in that time that it was called new amsterdam.

It's named after the original dutch name, and not the wall. However there might be some relation between the dutch word 'wal' and the english word 'wall', but that relation would be much older than NYC

I don't know, I couldn't get NYC. Probably because the map was inverted and southern tip pointed west instead of south. I knew it had to be an American city but couldn't tell. My first thought on Mecca was Damascus or Baghdad but I got there. What's hard is very subjective, I'm from Europe and knew the cities instantly when I saw the map.

It pained me to just watch him guess every Arabic city there is, but still not guessing Mecca. It would have been my first guess when he mentioned Arabia.

I'm just mad cause i took the quiz before watching the video just to see how i would do in it and my first guess was Mecca for that map but i forgot that you write it with two "c" so i wrote it with two "k" like we do it in german cause i thought the english do it the same so i didn't got the point for it. Basically the same happend with Tokyo cause i wrote Tokio in german cause i forgot it's not the same in english.
