The Douro Valley is where port wine is produced. Douro being the river that crosses the valley. Back in the days, the wine used to be transported downriver by boat to the city of Porto (lit. port/harbour) and from there to the world.Porto got all the fame for the wine, when all the hard work was being done upstream. I guess it should be called Douro wine instead but oh well. It's very touristic, both because of the wine tourism and because of the views (steep slopes filled with vineyard down to the river. Really, check the views). There's lot of scenic cuises up and downriver, a very scenic train line that goes by the river, and loads of places where you can go wine tasting or just check all the wine making process. If you go during the right months (September~October) there's places where you can even participate (it's ironic because you'll be paying to make things you'd usually get paid for xd).

No. At best, the Peloponnesian League (which is an alliance, not an empire (although many consider the Delian League as part of the Athenian empire. The circumstances are different but I'll let it slide)) is the greatest territorial extent of Sparta. Even so, the Peloponnesian League didn't even include the entire Peloponnese, and most significantly did not include Argos. Also, Sparta never had imperial ambitions. To think so would be naive.

Regarding Karelia, it's the lands ceded by Finnland to the Soviet union duriong the winter wars. It's still something that's a bit sore for nordic people. Karelia and Schleswig-Holstein where the last two regions that in part or whole where a part of the nordic region that was lost to outside powers. With Schleswig-Holstein the matter *has* been settled with a election, so while sore it's something we're all going to respect (although it would have been nice if it hadn't spent so much time under Germany that it lead to a demographic shift...) But in the case of Karelia it was taken in war against the will of both the locals, Finland and the rest of the nordic region... The local population *is* somewhat different from the rest of the nordic region due to previous Russian influence leading to for instance differences in religion. Yet culturally the native population there is still closer to the nordic region, or at least where during the winter war... A lot of people had to feel their homes due to the war though... It also lead to the Soviet union and later Russia ending up with a border with Norway and a military base (with nuclear subs in poor condition that might release nuclear waste) way closer to the Atlantic then what most of us are comfortable with... Everything considered it would probably be best if the region was independent rather then a part of Finland proper like it used to be. That way Russia could still keep it within its sphere of influence, we'd keep it as a buffer against them, and there would be a less extreme border between the wealth of the nordic region and the poverty of Russia. And the balance of power between the Russian immigrants to the region and the native Karelians could be worked out. And also, Russia most definitively would want to keep their naval base there while we would like a choke point against their ground foces entering Karelia and Finland... The people of Karelia have their own language that's *related* to but not identical to the language of Finland.

The first time this region was under Russian rule was all the way back in the 11th century under Novgorod. Then it was Swedish for a century in the 1600s, and then it was back in Russia. It hasn't been an independent territory for over 1000 years, and has only been under Nordic rule for 104 of them.

@@georgiykireev9678 It's a *bit* more complicated then that... That said, my main point was the *culture*. Even land deep within Russia isn't Russian culture at all with the local cultures suffering due to Russian rule. Scandinavia while our region is in the Germanic language family and culturally we've always had a lot of interaction with the finno-ugric peoples in the region as well as the other people around the baltic sea other then the Germans. We've had a bit of rivalry with the Germans as the Romans used us as a counterweight against them and they converted to christianity way earlier then us and just in general where a bit more imperialistic minded, expanding a bit close for comfort to several peoples around the Baltics including Denmark and Prussia (while it was still an area with baltic speaking peoples). And afterwards our languages and cultures had changed a lot in different directions... And let's just say that the get Germans, be it Teutonic knights or the Hanseatic league always was throwing their weight around quite a bit, something independent minded peoples around the Baltic sea and on the Scandinavian peninsular never where too keen on. While our interactions northwards kept going, for instance with the pomor trade in the north in the case of Norway as well as the interaction between Scandinavians and the Karelians east of Finland in varying degrees both under Russian rule and under "Russian rule" (in periods when it was contested or where Russian presence was limited in nature even if it was there on paper) Karelia didn't become truly Russian till after the winter war when the demographic makeup of the region was changed with the Karelians often fleeing their homes into Finland, Russians moving in and Stalin moving people around (some Norwegians ended up moved from the lands of the pomor trade and further into Russia)

@@Luredreier You're a hypocrite. So, Russia is making them all suffer, but you're the benevolent saviours that never even inconvenienced anyone? You keep bringing up the 20th century stuff, completely ignoring how the history before that is really not in your favour, with Russia holding the region for 10 times longer than anyone else. If anything, it's you guys that are the invaders, who conquered the region and later lost it.
@Luredreier
@Luredreier 4 жыл бұрын
@@georgiykireev9678 I'm not going to pretend that we don't have blood on our hands... For instance after being converted we played a mayor role in the northern crusades (just like our kings did *within* the Scandinavian countries). Conversion wasn't a peaceful process at all... My point is just that while Russia might have "held" those lands the *culture* still wasn't Russian, those lands where majority non-Russian ethnically for all of that time and they interacted more with others around the Baltic sea then they did with Russians for one simple reason, it's *easier* to transport both people and goods over water then land. And Karealia isn't any more Russian then Russia is Viking or in this case Rus. Yes, the vikings formed the states that became Russia, but the majority of the people where slavic and so was the culture. In Karelia that's even more the case. Just because a certain government is in charge of an area for x amount of time doesn't mean that the culture of that area is the same as that of the government in question, be it a king/emperor, soviet or parliament/president. As for the whole invading thing... Slavic people and Germanic people are equally guilty there. But we've always had a certain affinity with the finno-ugric peoples, something that's also seen in our languages, Norwegian and Swedish both contain a lot of finno-ugric words and concepts. I'm not going to deny that we didn't do a lot of damage to the cultures of finno-ugric peoples, especially their religions, but even with attempts within Scandinavia at destroying those cultures at times they where still better off there then under both the Tzar, Soviets and even modern Russia.

Well, it's semantics unfortunately. If a country is a part of a bigger political entity then they are both. It's fully acceptable for those within that political entity to refer to themselves as Countries, but it's also acceptable for those outside to use the term "Region". As I said, it's just semantics.
