Downhill putts break far more, because the lighter you hit the ball, the more time the break has a chance to effect the ball.

What he's saying about down hill and up hill is true, but it's SO much harder to judge the speed of the ball going downhill rather then up hill; so overall up hill puts are easier to sink in 1 shot

I think they calculated this given a dead straight putt, b.c a putt with any side tilt (break) if started below the ideal line will continue to move away from the hole on a downhill putt. Given that, I understand the science behind it, however it gets blurred with reality, due to the fact that a perfectly dead straight putt is extremely rare.

Uphill putts are being pulled away from the hole by gravity, so if it is a straight putt then there is no predominant direction the ball will be pulled; it would continue to go either direction away from the hole that you hit the ball towards. Straight downhill putts are the opposite because gravity is pulling directly in the direction of the hole. WRT your uphill L-R example, the ball is breaking because of the slope and resultant gravity effects on the ball trying to move it back downhill

1:21 makes several bad assumptions... its like assuming downhill automatically means the hole acts like a mini-sink, and uphill means hole is a mini-peak. In real life, a hole need not sit on a stationary point like that.

it makes sense guys you gotta think like a golfer though. up hill putts generally move slower therefore the slope of the green even if its only minor, the ball will be move more. down hill putts move faster therefore if the break is minor, again, it will move less because speed takes out the effects of the break.

This is physical science, it's not wrong.

I imagine the uphill/downhill is a similar effect as hitting into or with the wind. Downwind reduces side spin, but you lose distance control which is no good, especially on shorter shots.

it depends how deep your golf course put the cups in the ground, many golf courses (of semite origin) don't put them deep at all making it very easy for it to lip out
@georgehiggins13206 жыл бұрын
the depth of the hole has nothing to do with it unless its less deep than half the ball.

What you are saying is correct for BREAKING putts. In this video they are referring to STRAIGHT uphill vs STRAIGHT downhill putts ie: putts that are either UP the "fall line" or down the "fall line". A fall line downhill put is easier because it will stay on the fall line if the stroke was true.If you push or pull the putt it will try to return to the fall line. A fall line uphill putt will move further away from the fall line when pushed or pulled. Study Geoff Mangum's videos.He is the best

ive always thought downhill putts break more because you hit them with less pace so the break affects a slower rolling ball more then when you hit a uphill putt with more pace?

Probably had something to do with the slope of the green right at the hole or if previous golfer that day messed with the cut around the hole.

@dwidep they are assuming that there is absolutely no break in the putt

how does the ball know which side to turn going uphill? Does it always turn to the left going uphill (away from the cup)? what if you miss right, does it still turn left, or does it turn right because it is aware of where the cup is? Im confused how it will always brake away from the hole going uphill but towards it going downhill. How the hell does the ball know where the cup is????
@Axel11J11 жыл бұрын
a downhill putt is harder to judge the speed so if you're off, then you're down the hill unlike an uphill putt where you don't have to worry about it rolling away if you hit it too hard. Sports science you done fucked up again.

"a miss aimed putt downhill will move towards the cup, while uphill off line putts will move away from the cup" this makes absolutely no sense. wouldnt this depend on the side of the cup they missed? i mean if it is uphill breaking slightly left to right and you miss it too far right yes it will move away but if you miss it left it will be moving towards

A downhill putt moves towards the cup while an uphill putt moves away from the cup? What? So I just gotta hit downhill putts left or right of the cup and they will go in while uphill puts have no shot at going in one so ever? Sound research sports science.

From a physics standpoint a players odds are actually better for making a downhill putt. The margin of error is greater for both speed and aim on a downhill putt. So you are saying that i have a higher margin of error (aka leeway/forgiveness/Room to fck up and still sink the putt). If my aim is off but my speed is perfect so that the ball doesnt have enough momentum as it reaches the disance of the hole, stops exactly at the distance the hole is from the ball, perhaps this makes sense. However If my speed is off but my aim is right I can come up Short which would mean That it i even had a chance to reach the hole, or long which would mean that the speed was slightly 2 fast but if aim was perfect and speed was slightly 2 fast then its likely that it will still go in. Aim and Speed are not mutually exclusive. They are interrconnected such that each one is critically dependant on each other for a putt that will break to the left or right , and more certainly, an uphill putt and downhill putt. For downhill putts, an incremental increase higher than the optimal speed required for the putt to go in, will generate a greater increase in the distance that the ball will be to the hole. being slightly over the speed limit causes the optimal aim/line to change as well, And this will require deviation to a different path that has the highest probability to get in the hole at that speed. The reason why aim and speed are codependant is because different levels of momentum have different levels of of friction, or resistance, on the ball. This video states downhill putts are better situations for the player but this depends on how steep the downhill putt is and the distance of the putt. The average steepness of the hill and the average ball- to- hole distance are required to accurately implement this information. In my opinion the downhill putt they are referring to is minimally steep where its not steep enough to encourage the ball to roll past the hole (meaning the ball is nearly entirely dependant on its own momentum , aka the energy from your putt, and the green is not steep enough to have any synergestic effects on momentum therefore no significant variance vs a putt from a flat green) and the ball to hole distance is AT MOST 2 feet
