great tips, i am just starting to get into this hobby. i find this very nostalgic of when i used to collect baseball cards as a kid. just wondering cuz you mentioned to focus on buying rookie cards, but what about also buying cards when a player changes teams (i.e lebrons first year in a laker jersey)?
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chonger. Welcome and great question. 1st year jersey cards definitely attract some interest, but not nearly as easy to determine as RCs. Lebron/AD 1st year Lakers cards skyrocketed in July/August but have cooled tremendously. While I expect them to hold some long term value because they actually won, thus building their legacy in LA, I see them as better short term flip opportunities, especially because the players may not win a championship (Kawhi with the Clippers, KD with Brooklyn, etc)
@ryandenslow8225
@ryandenslow8225 3 жыл бұрын
Too add to this...I think it depends on the team they go too. Lakers are one of the more Iconic franchises in all of sports. Honestly I think it comes down to two things. One, does the player have an individual fan base (ie. Lebron Fans compared to Cavalier fans) and also how popular the franchise is. Think Lakers, Yankees, Celtics...those kinda teams. Both of those combined I think made first year Laker Lebron cards popular. Still though, they have to build some kind of legacy or they ultimately or they probably go down.

I'm looking at getting back into card collecting so this video was awesome!! Thank you so much for putting this together. One question that I have is what do you do with all the cards that don't have value and are just normal cards? Back when I was a kid it was fun to collect the whole team or player groups to show off to my friends. As an adult, that isn't as much of a draw, so what do you do with those "undesirable" cards?

The one thing most people don't know is that in Prizm the Green Parallel is more rare than the Silver. Basically there are less Green than Silver..but like you said, the Silver is more shiner.. more appealing to the eye. Green parallel is cool if you get players from the Celtics, Bucks, Philly Eagles, ect. I think if people realized that the Green is more rare I still don't think it would be matter...the Silver is just to appealing..and by now it would be hard to convince people otherwise.

Hey man, really enjoyed this video thank you. Just wanted to ask. I’m looking to start collecting purely as a hobby maybe even investment like yourself but there seems so many different brands under the panini umbrella - just wonder where would you recommend starting. Like which boxes to pursue. Don’t want to waste money. As I’m new to all this & from the UK, the part I don’t understand is what cards are good or better. In a ranking system kind of. There’s base, parallel, inserts, prizim, auto, prestige, contender and many more. Even donruss. I don’t quite get that part. Anyway I know that’s quite a tough question and appreciate you have lots to do but just wanted to ask and say appreciated your video. Anyway take care and hope all is well

Great video! One thing I’ve learned and would add…eBay is obviously a great place to buy singles, but it’s also the way collectors value a cards worth (by looking at how much a card has recently sold for). So if you get a good deal for a card on eBay, ultimately you just lowered its value a bit as well. This is why I try to finds deals at cards shows or other websites. Unfortunately there isn’t a Becket magazine anymore like we had in the 90’s lol

Similar to the concerns of other card hobbies like Pokemon that are riding the hype wave right now, do you think that we might encounter a bubble in the sports card market? If so (e.g. due to overproduction of certain rookie cards), do you see that as being a potential problem for hyped sets in the past few years, or, rather, for future sets yet to be released? (Looking at long-term value)
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lucky Pepe. Definitely concerned. I felt like summer was a giant bubble and then it popped and it will happen repeatedly. The longer this goes on, the more I would focus on older cards (at least 2017 or older) The pop reports of recent rcs are insane. Perhaps parallels and serial numbered cards of 2017-2020 make more sense too

For Baseball especially recent rookie cards and not "prospects" the go to products would be Topps "flagship" - Series 1, Series 2, and Topps update (but these will come down to the players in the checklist in that year) And usually the first set they appear in, out of the above sets is the desired card to collect. Also Topps Chrome, Topps Chrome Update, Topps Sapphire are also desired sets. But do your research, compare prices, compare market fluctuation over a number of months before investing. If just starting out spend time researching before jumping in. 👍

Good tips. Topps Heritage for baseball can also be good depending on the year. They recreate the flagship design from 40 years prior. So some designs are going to be more sought after than others. Or if the year they are recreating had a great rookie class, that can also add to the hunt. Also gotta double down on Young Guns for hockey. Outside of maybe the Cup RPAs, it has been the gold standard for Rookies for like 20 years now. Despite being 'low end', the right players can go well into the 4 digits.

My dad tried to get me into collecting when I was very young, I ignored him and didn't want to do it. I am older now in my 20s and I am getting into it, I am very blessed to have a lifelong collector on my side. He has been giving me his duplicates and sets that he doesn't value as much. I am very happy to get into the card game! This is very fun, I wish I would of considered it more when I was a kid!

Rookie question here: are the low valuations for the sets you mentioned such as revolution, Phoenix, chronicle etc. an opportunity to diversify at a low price/high risk investment? Is that a slow game worth playing? Thanks in advance!

Probably not, at least not generally. If you loop it into his points on rookie cards it can be. A chronicle PSA 10 Herbert would go for a good amount but it’s only for high end players

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on 1/1 cards. Obviously agree rookie cards will always be the major focus but 1/1 cards from non rookie years (using the Lebron James yr 8 example you used) can still carry alot of value. Great vid, hope to get a response to this comment!!
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 3 жыл бұрын
For sure. 1/1s of icons are super valuable, just tough to assess a fair value when you can't easily compare it to other similar cards. Even other 1/1s could be from more or less desirable sets.

For higher end football/basketball, I would also add Contenders and National Treasures. Also rookie autos are very underappreciated now. People will eventually realize how overprinted the base cards are, especially in the last few years. Guys can only sign so many autos, so those have some inherent rarity, and are also much cooler than just a piece of paper. I also like your rule about not paying more than a PSA 8 value raw. I have a similar rule which is that I'll assess it online (just stay away from anything in a sleeve or toploader) and then pay no more than 1 grade less than what I think it is. If you're less experienced with grading, this rule should be 2 grades less. So if you think something looks like a PSA 7, pay no more than the PSA 5 value.

Idk if this is a dumb question, but I’ve been a collector and I kind of want to get into investing and selling cards, is a card of a player in their first year with a new team worth more than a different year? And I’m assuming the rookie card is still more valuable but how does it compare with that? (E.g. a 2020 Tom Brady for the bucs)
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 3 жыл бұрын
Hey George. Welcome and that's a great question. All I can speak to is what I have observed so far...and that is more demand around an all time great in a new team's uniform. However, I believe there's a good chance that this is temporary and is tied to the success of that player with that team. I don't know of any collectors that want Brett Favre Vikings/Jets cards or MJ collectors that want his Wizard cards. What's I'll be doing is selling those cards at a decent profit if I can buy them low enough vs trying to 3x my money on them. Even LBJ's Lakers cards have fallen off a cliff so I don't see them as being nearly as desirable as a serial #d card, RC, or perhaps 2nd year

Do you have a discord? Also could you do a video about which high end cards to invest in? like national treasures, immaculate, flawless and co? which are the no no's? if vertical is better than horizontal for an rpa? is sticker auto worth less than on card?
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Vincent. Great questions. I don't have a discord, but I will offer my 2 cents on those topics you mentioned even though I'm not dealing with those high end cards yet myself. As rules of thumb, yes vertical is more desirable (probably because slabs are designed for vertical) and on card autos are usually rarer and go for more than sticker autos (which to me looks like a used bandaid landed on the card) haha Have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

I'm new to all of this, but I looked into grading, and PSA is charging $200 per card. I don't understand why this fee is so high. I know cards are more likely to sell at a higher rate if they are graded, but how are we supposed to make any money if the fees are this high? Am I missing something?

@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Aaron. Of course. 15% is steep so that's always something to include with projections. It's kind of like selling a house. You know there will be 6% minimum taken so you have to do the math ahead of time and see what you're willing to sell for or what you can do to stretch your margin. Selling in FB/IG groups is another option but that requires some time and risk as well.

Hey man. Lucky to just see this. Because it’s Russell Wilson, if it were me, I’d hold until either he’s heading to a super bowl or you have a better place to put your money. I like Russell for the next few years so there’s plenty of chances imo. Plus, BGS looks to be in a slump compared to psa. Hopefully they’ll rebound and will be more desirable as a grading company as a whole (though you’re golden with the 10s). Merry Christmas!

hey, a question about the pandemic's effect on RCs. with guys like Lamelo coming in, do you think his prizm card without his hornets jersey could actually be beneficial, since it was such a unique time in history? Hey C. I feel that any cards showing fake fans, masks, Covid related stuff will be beneficial long term, but not piecing it together. I feel like it needs to say "Covid" on it to really have that emotional connection. That's just my 2 cents :)

Hello. Can any one who is an expert tell me when PSA allows 60/40 centering on the front of a PSA Gem 10 card? I've looked at hundreds of cards now from the early 80's to the present and couldn't find a card with worse than 55/45 centering in either direction on the front. This is in spite of the fact that PSA says in their grading description on their web site that the front centering standard is, "not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front. I'm puzzled.
