I’m just a collector. Never sold a card, traded a few, but I even have all my childhood cards from the 80s and 90s. I enjoy the fun of collecting. These investors and flippers have taken the spirit out of the hobby. I don’t even like my local hobby shop anymore, because it’s more about the business. Whatever happened to the pack of cards for 50 cents? As a kid, I could afford that, but how can kids and parents afford the current prices even at Walmart? Investors and flippers ruined a great hobby for most people.

Same scenario, and completely agree. If I depended on modern cards, I'd be out in a heartbeat. But there's a period from late 90s until a few years ago where I didnt buy cards that still keeps me entertained. Plus some vintage and the sets Missed. And it cheaper than overpriced boring new boxes

@chasejackson7248 dollar gas is 3.50 now. Back in the 80s, I could mow a lawn for $10 or shovel some snow and buy a box of cards. I saw where a box of cats is selling for $900. Do regular kids have that kind of money? This is completely a business now.

I consider myself much more of a collector/dealer than a flipper, but I've been having as much fun during the last several months as I did during the height of the market. The key for me is that I largely stay away from ultra modern cards, which, as you mention, are often flipped like a hot potato from one person to the next. Instead, I try to focus on cards collectors truly want--key rookies, rare 1990s inserts, pre-war cards like t206, etc. Those happen to be the cards I prefer for my PC, so the collector/dealer aspect meshes together pretty well. I'm not necessarily making a ton of money, but I consider it a fun side hustle + hobby. I agree that there are a lot of scammers and shady people in the hobby, but that's always been a huge problem, going back to the 1990s and surely before that. It just comes with the territory. Anyway, sorry to hear you're getting out for now. Hopefully, you'll jump back in down the road.

The hobby will always be in a catch 22. Remember, the companies are not worried about long-term values of these cards. Their job is print supply to meet demand. When the hobby is popular, late 80’s/early 90’s and the past 5 years, they are printing more to meet demand and you get a glut of worthless cards. When the hobby is less popular, they print less and the cards hold their value over time. Thats the irony and why you should never look at them from an investment point of view. The best era of cards that hold their value are usually when no one is collecting or before people knew to take care of their cards. That’s why the hobby will always be in a catch 22.

You're absolutely right about the lack of value you get from a hobby box in recent years. Back in 2008, I bought 2 hobby boxes (for $60 dollars each?) of Leaf rookies and stars. In one box, I pulled a Calvin Johnson auto to 15 (still in my PC) and in the other, an Emerald auto of Marshawn Lynch to 5 (traded for vintage Steeler cards). The odds certainly seem much steeper pulling monster hits these days.

The idiots continue to buy hobby boxes over $300 or more, until people stop spending that much, it won’t change these greedy companies from jacking up the prices and I never buy cards from dealers, eBay is the way to go with auctions, selling can suck with the fees ebay has but there are ways around it with setting a certain price with the fees incorporated in the price and you can gradually lower the price as it doesn’t sell

Starting to see a lot of the points you make and totally agree with you. Plus the seemingly endless variations of cards is diluting the value of cards so much that a 1/1 isn't even a 1/1 anymore. I collect Nico Collins and obtained his 1/1 and was excited only to find 7-8 other variations of the same 1/1 card with different inserts (Shield vs. Laundry Tag vs. Swoosh vs. Glove vs. Jersey...etc). Until things settle down, I tend to agree that it may be time to step away from the hobby from the business perspective of things. It used to be as simple as "you have what I want, I have what you want, let's trade.". You don't see that as much anymore....at least not that simple.

Lol. I collected cards as a kid back in the late 70s and early 80s. I just recently bought a card collection from a former dealer. Had absolutely no idea what cards were selling for. I paid for it because of the volume of cards he had. Then I went online and was shocked at cards prices. Most of the cars I bought were mostly junk wax which is a term i just learned. Lol. Luckily he had a ton of basketball cards that are from the late 80s and early 90. Lots of Jordan's, none of the rookie card. Like I said, I bought the cards as a hobby, thinking I could sell some to recoup what I paid. I had no clue that cards were so expensive.

Sounds like youre just saying youve been priced out of the hobby. I personally got tired of all the pettiness with condition of cards and artificial pop reports. Its always "Oh! This one is a pop of just 25 in a ten!" Or "This one has a scratch!" Or "Oh!! This card has a dinged corner!" I switched to original photographs and havent looked back. Sure, many of those have taken off in value, but theres still alot of undervalued photos where theyre still in their infancy. Mantle rookies, Mays rookies, George Brett rookies, etc. Ive found tons of deals, even with some type 1 photos, and especially type II.

I too quit baseball card collecting, buying many cards myself. I started out collecting them since the 60's, I'm 62 now and, my journey was well over 50 years. I have no complaints other than 1 major baseball card company, there is no real money in the hobby. I'll keep my major cards and, will be selling the remainder of my 784,000 cards, my good cards will be buried with me. I will still hold my goodies because 99% can't afford my cards, most are graded between 9 to 10, I have a handful of 7 grade cards and, only 1 graded a 6 which is fine with me.

I mean, the hobby comes with people addicted to certain habits, like checking ebay, facebook marketplace, etc... for card deals. Pacing Target and Walmart for new card releases. Not to mention friend networks into cards pulling you back in. As someone, who'd also like to take a step back, I'm curious what your input would be. Thanks

I'm confident the hobby will be back in a good place in a couple of years but for now, the hobby is out of balance in every way. (Priorities seem all out of whack!) It will cycle back to the better days once the overall economy recovers. Also remember, the National has had record setting attendance recently so the interest is there. It's just that the sports card market is not following traditional concepts and rules right now which causes a lot of confusion about how things are really supposed to logically work. Interesting take on shows. I agree, all I hear is a flipper offering half comps "cuz I'm a dealer, I need to make my end, bro" at every show I am at. I am a collector. I don't sell. I keep. Been collecting 1 guy for 30 plus years BUT, that said, I'm not really your "mark" as you described the need for the end collector who "really values" that card. I wont pay "retail" or top comps for anything. If I cant buy it cheap, I leave it. Cards are just pieces paper or plastic, so I dont sweat them. I am close to a lot of dealers, I have a very good understanding of what cards sell for form dealer to dealer. that's what I'll pay, not much more usually. prices are crashing back thankfully, the last few years were retail sucker bubbles.

Agree w a lot your points. I'm still setting up 2 or 3 times a month...and....its...a......GRIND. I can relate to the guys buying at 60-75% so they can immediately go flip on What-not or elsewhere...... As if I woke up early, loaded my truck, drive-time, Hotel room, table fees, set up time, and do it all again in reverse..... just to present my collection to them at 65% 😅. I can avoid all that and fire sell everything on ebay at 87% after fees any day of the week, from my living room. But they get annoyed when I want near comps for my effort. Like I said. A lot of fair points, don't follow you and this is the first video I've seen but I do this for a living. I'm not a monster breaker or influencers but overall I guess where I disagree overall is that even though a lot of what you said is true there are still spots for smart people to make money. What is happening is that the "low hanging fruit" is gone. Now you need to have the right connections to move cards at comps and the ability to buy smart. Also grading pipelines are very important and just having a good eye for value. I don't think it's fair you called about CC2 with some of those other names (which I agree with) - I mean the only derogatory thing you said about him is that he's a "huge nerd". Dude we collect paper sports pictures...we are all nerds to some degree. Ryan (CC2) is a good guy, I've done deals with him and met him on many occasions. You come off like one of those people that look for the bad in people before the good. If you are on video helping kids and giving stuff away then you are automatically trying to make money off their rich parents? Come on. We can be good people while also trying to make a living. Good luck in your next adventure.

I've noticed a number of these "I'm quitting sports cards" videos on KZfaq lately. Time to buy singles? I think so, if you buy the right player and the right cards. The real value for me is in the Leaf Metal Draft 2022 football cards. That's a very limited print set, the cards are amazing..... and the prices are great. If you grab the right players, you will make money. 💰💰💰

That’s better for collectors. And I disagree I think things should be based on eBay and other platforms. It’s real time pricing, whether it moves up or down. I agree with a lot of your points in the video. I think it's honestly a great time to be a collector right now. Like you said, you can get actual HoF autos, etc for cheaper than guys that haven't caught a ball yet. I myself this year have dedicated to collect Nascar cards as that's what I like the most. Am I going to make money off of it? Heck no. Do I enjoy collecting them? Yes of course. I just think the flippers and dealers who are trying to get money out of this hobby are ruining it. And companies love it, so the companies' quality is going downhill quickly as they pump out 50 new sets with poor quality control. And guess what? People still buy it. If you look at this hobby as a money-making opportunity, you're in the wrong hobby. I don't think sports cards are dead, I just think that flippers and dealers that are in for the money just highlight the negatives. KZfaq does as well. If you're a collector, collecting for the fun of it and buying what you want, you're in a good spot right now. I've been having the most fun in the hobby since I started collecting and the only thing that I've changed is buying single cards that I want. Just make sure to be careful with what wax you spend, and not buy any wax that don't seem like a good deal for yourself.
@Kybone

Some might reason that it's the people that spend a lot of time complaining online (about flippers, dealers, Panini, PSA) instead of just collecting that are giving the hobby a bad image. If collecting is someone's main motivation, then nothing is stopping them from acquiring what they want that is within their budget - plain and simple.

One of the bigger problems we have in this space is the the older, legacy dealers are basically just memorabilia shops now. These guys are lazy because they don't even bother to learn about the players anymore. But this is not an issue with the younger streamers whom everyone seems to hate. At least those guys take the time to research the players and they keep up with multiple sports not just one specific area. The legacy guys hate streamers and breakers and constantly bash them instead of trying to learn something from them. We are our own worst enemy.

Geoff Wilson is not the problem with sports cards. People who dont do their own research snd are trying to use cards as a get rich quick scheme are the problem. Geoff is exceptionally rich with money to waste. But he has helped me re-think and focus what I want to collect, wants to invest in and want to flip. The problem 1000% is whatnot and breakers. Breaking preys on peoples gambling addicitions. I see guys on whatnot pay more for half the teams in a break than the hobby boxes cost. Part of me thinks that the breaker himself bidding people up and then probably cancelling the sales when its their own buy and selling the singles. Then you see breakers cancel the sales when a huge hit comes. Every big card seems to come from a breaker and it is why boxes cost so much. Like you said, breakers screaming like idiots over a $100 card when the person lost money on the break gets old and stupid.
