just wondering... if it had been Huberdeau on the third goal instead of Coleman, would the NHL allow the awarded goal, or would they insist Huberdeau actually take the penalty shot. because with Huberdeau there is always the possibility he would miss the net or pass the puck before it crosses the line

My 2 cents, I think Mangiapane should go back on the line with Backlund and Coleman. And park him in the slot for the powerplay. He can also PK with Dube or Backlund if need be. He's just not getting the puck as much as he should. It's not like his shooting percentage is bad, he's just not getting the opportunities he deserves on this line. He had great chemistry with Backlund and Coleman.

Because Florida is stupid and didn't dump the puck in and tried to get cute with a lazy pass wide too deep in the neutral zone on an entry that easily got picked off when they should have just fired it in down low behind them if they're going to get cute playing up high on PK trying to pick off passes at blue line on entry fire it down low back them up. Make them go 180 feet don't give them a breakaway what are you doing Panthers ugh shaking my head

I think this has got to be the first time I have seen an official award a goal without the player having to actually take the penalty shot. That was the right decision though, as it would have been a goal in the first place.

Lately Flames can never be counted out of a game it seems. They play hard, they have a good top 4 that complement each other (there's a reason they're on every trade rumour), a good PK, a better than expected bottom pair and good goaltending. The forwards as a whole though have been underwhelming despite better than expected contributions from Zary, Pospisil, Sharangovich, Greer, Coleman and Kadri, plus the usual from Backlund. To start with probably time to put Mangiapane back with Backlund and Coleman. They could also call up Klapka or Pettersen (looked like an NHLer to me albeit limited viewing on a 4th line in pre-season).

Very good win Calgary, well deserved win. Especially getting a unexpected insurance goal, thanks to Florida trying to rough up 1 of the players while tossing the stick in front of no one around the area where the goalie is there. Trying to create the " invisible " goalie? Not right Florida 😅😅😊😊

There wasn’t one. The net was empty when he was tripped…the other team isn’t allowed to put their goalie back for the shot…so it’s an automatic goal No need for an actual shot

Actually, the ref did call for a penalty shot but the rules are that a penalty shot called when the goalie is on the bench for an extra attacker is automatically a goal.

Can someone tell refs a missed shot isn't a goal and it needs to go in net? Auto goal penalty shot for empty net situation is bad rule because guys miss empty net shots ALL THE TIME snd its a penalty shot not a penalty goal. You etill need to attempt and make penalty shot and goaltending is allowed on penalty shots so how can uou give him a goal? Make him shoot penalty shot. Put goalie in or let 1 of 6 forwards to defend penalty shot, or at very least let him shoot at empty net, but you can't invent imaginary goals thst NEVER HAPPENED because PUCK NEVER WENT IN. You still have to make him shoot it and make the penalty shot. If he misses 2nd time he doesn't deserve goal. He never even attempted penalty shot. It was a good defensive play too and guys get more leeway with stick checking on empty net situations. I would let that go no call, but an automatic goal when it never went in? Terrible. You can't give him a goal if he never does that if he missed original shot because then you're awarding goals to teams who never score them and the outcome is illegitimate. Maybe he could have scored empty net if no penalty but maybe not, and he didn't! He got blocked and missed the net the penalty occured after the missed shot after he made a bad play holding puck too long and got blocked and punished for his mistake. Refs sucked. Phantom slashing and hooking calls on the panthers all game for clean plays and then they give calgary a goal on a missed block shot just because they dive on every play. How do they give automatic goal juwt because net is empty? These guys block 40 shots a night. let a forward play goalie or defense or jsut put regular goalie in or at very least have him shoot penalty shot at empty net. You can't have a goal if puck never goes in. Refs cant just add goals that dont exist. Make him shoot penalty shot and score it or better yet tell CGY to stop diving all game and clean up their own rebound and score empty net themselves. He held puck too long and got punished by montour for his mistake after he made up for his turnover mistake by back checking hard to save the goal and he djd so how cann uou say CGY got 1 point from puck crossinf goal line if it never crossed line. No thats not a goal.

Do we really have to explain to you the difference between shooting on an empty net… And a penalty shot on an empty net? 99% chance it goes in on a penalty shot on an empty net. There are no distractions, and no sense of urgency like you have when the opposing team is on your tail. They could walk it into the net if they wanted. There’s no point wasting everybody’s time for the one percent chance it doesn’t

So, here’s how it works. A penalty shot is called, and the defensive team may not, under any circumstances, (I think exception is if netminder is somehow injured, but not sure) switch goaltenders. Since the Panthers didn’t have a goaltender in net, the penalty shot would be on an empty net, since there was no goaltender. Since it would be a waste of time, the refs just award the goal, and move on.
