Brian created some interesting projectiles using resin and spot welder tips. The challenge for me is often just getting the load recipe correct for them to function well.

Perhaps, when it comes to Acrylic-Cased surroundings of projectiles, a tiny swipe with some rough sandpaper would give grip to the sabot and... well.. I'm sure you can figure out the rest. But this was "Bottom Heavy" for sure. Very strange how some completely lost the plot & others were stable! Will be a real treat to see what comes next!

@@taofledermaus I don't disagree with your hypothesis.. resin and shotgun powerlevels rarely mix well... yet... it's still possible. Non? I just see a shuttlecock trying to fly backwards. With the weight up front, wouldn't the round self-stabilize? (Assuming it held together)

As far as I’m concerned mixed results are more interesting. I used to think that projectile design was cut and dried after a century or so, with aircraft, rocketry and missile design piled on top of what is known about bullets, but I now see that there are still mysteries to be solved in the field as you’ve shown many times. You’re probably right that a lot of the issues are down to how the slug is interfaced to the barrel but clearly these slugs have a lot of promise. I’m still getting used to seeing O. G. with hair though. Have to admit Ito a little envy because my hairline has slid a lot farther back than his…

So I’m not the only one who had that thought. The flat surface of the resin doesn’t seem to make much difference aerodynamically but we’ve seen that before so it would probably be worthwhile to do a retest if someone can afford to make up another batch…

Considering that all aerodynamic advantage gained from the shape of the welder tip was lost by encasing it in resin, I'm surprised that you didn't try loading some of them flat end forward. This may have improved stability. It was all very entertaining though.
@taofledermaus

Shooting it backwards, the pointed and heavy copper would act like a splitting wedge and drive itself through the resin and then through the wads.- from inertia. The Red Racer slugs were a good example of how that is possible.

the tip has a weird intermediate axis thing going on and its really fascinating. it almost makes it all the way around to fly backwards like a T nut would. there is a great youtube video filmed on the ISS that shows a perfect example of intermediate axis rotation with a T handle being spun in micro gravity. i have a hunch that the welding tip would actually fly better backwards with the fat end going first

I have a .45 Colt case loaded with a copper welder tip that looks just like a round nose FMJ. You can't tell it has a tapered hollow base where it fits on the end of a long copper shank in a welder. I used to work at a GM plant and can tell you it takes a LOT of welders, with a lot of copper tips to weld floor pans together. When the tips get messed up the welder maintenance and repairmen (WEMRs) throw them in a bin, and when someone has time to kill they turn the tips on a machine made just for that. It's like a little drill press with a flat U-shaped cutter. You set a tip on the holder and bring the cutter down on it, and it scrapes off the galvanized steel and burnt copper, leaving you with a nice round tip again. They have machines for other shapes, like truncated cones, but we mostly used round ones.

Slug is back heavy, while the hardened resin makes the slug defacto shaped like a cylinder. Aerodynamics of a cylinder will always flip the heavy end forward in flight. That is what was the origin of instability. The slug was in the middle of stabilizing heavy end forward. IMHO.

I like the noisy shots, it reminds me of the old westerns where most shots had the Irish twang of Rick O'Shay! The intermittent spin of the projectile may be due to the sabot slipping on the projectile and not the bore. The cure may be to use two keyway/slots on the side of the projectile and sabot bent over to fit the groove, then the sabot may impart the total spin on the projectile. Or possibly use wax to temporarily glue the sabot to the projectile to get the most spin out of the system.

Guys, you are hilarious. I'm watching you from Ukraine. I've never shot a single slug from a shotgun in my whole life. I didn't even know the meaning of the word "slug". And now I can't wait to watch your new video. Your sense of humor, your attention to technical details, the way you communicate with your audience makes your content really outstanding. Thank you. Looking forward to new videos.
