We recently opted for a combination of Govee Neon 16ft and 10ft strips and it's been awesome. They look great up close and have *mostly* good CRI and color. They tend to be a little weak on replicating warmer, incandescent lighting, but that's true of so many LEDs. They have a tons of cool patterns that can be synched together, but I haven't tried it with Home Assistant yet.

@@TheHookUp There's a Govee LAN controller integration in HACS that can control quite a bit of Govee's strips and the response time is near instantaneous. Be sure to see if the Govee strip you want to purchase is on the LAN supported models list.

I followed your links for the diy kit you suggested. All the components arrived today. The issue I’m having is how to wire it up. The power supply has a connection on it that is not compatible with the Shelly controller. Maybe you could make a video on how to construct this setup?

I've been installing 24volt / 720 ICs for a few months, and this vid confirms what I know. First is you need to choose between addressable vs uniform color for best results. My 720 ICs pull over 100watts in full white mode, but a fraction that just running effects. Next, silicone anything destroys output. I stick to conventional channels with lightly frosted covers with COBs. Only time I bother with silicone is for swimming pools.

Nice job! Very thorough. I’ve done internet research on some of these, and had previously decided on the BTF 24 volt. Really appreciate you actually testing each, I’ll be buying your Cob recommendation. I’ve bought individually addressable LED strips in the past, and they are fun to play with, but honestly I don’t see the practicality. The chasing flashing tricks come across as Las Vegas sparkle. My spouse already thinks my fascination with colored LED lighting is marginally tacky, so I’m unlikely to use the individual addressable functions.

I use addressable less and less these days, and no matter what type I'm using I always cut power to the strip when not in use. I find that not having them constantly powered not only saves electricity but also significantly increases lifespan.

Great video. I was hoping it might tie in to your 'best diffuser' video though. I guess I basically want to know what's the best option between using one of these strips alone versus using one with a lower rated diffuser versus ignoring these and using some other strip with a better diffuser. Great videos and i want to say Thank You in advanced! I've got a question and I'm sure you could easily answer. If you were needing to run 85 feet (may add about 3 foot extra to that for a total of 88) of led strip and wanted them waterproof, addressable, and with customizable cool effects, which type of led strip, controller, power supply would you use? I'm not concerned about whether they are a pre-assembled kit or not. They will be mounted around the interior of a 27 foot pool (mounted up under the top rail firing down toward the water,4-5 above waterline, not submerged). The plugs/power/controller have no chance of getting wet or splashed as they will go inside a waterproof/weatherproof control cabinet. Also if I decide to go non-addressable rgb, which would you recommend? I obviously wan't the best bang for my buck and I have a fear that it may be a lot more costly to go addressable, so I'm totally fine with RGB. Please help, Thanks again!

You'll want to make sure you have a regulated 12V power source. It's not uncommon for alternators to spike to 15-16V which can damage 12V electronics.

Great video! I'm looking to shine color from my ceiling onto a wall painted flat black. I don't want to see the LED diodes so I'm wondering if there are LEDs that point or are cut at an angle. In other words, if I'm looking at that wall I just want to see the effect of the light, not the LED diodes. I'm wondering if i need to install a small piece of wood across the ceiling to physically hide the LED strip. Thoughts?

Because the forward voltage drop on LEDs is small compared to 24v, you would either need smaller COB devices with many diodes in series per colour which I don't suspect anyone currently manufactures, or you would need some way of smoothing the current waveform if switching onto a lower voltage LED device, and such a tiny switch mode circuit would be challenging to manufacture affordably. TLDR 24v is high, so you need many diodes in series to avoid really complicated power supplies per LED group, and no one manufactures small enough RGB COB devices.

Yeah, you'd need to find a 10mm strip or a 12mm tube if you wanted to do that with an addressable strip.

BTF has individually addressable RGBW strips (and they have warm/neutral and cool white options for the white diodes) so you can go that route if you want to.

Great video as always. I’ve looked at these type of lights to possibly use for year round outdoor house light decorations, would you recommend any of theses for that type of installation? The silicons seemed the best to me but would need quite a bit to cover roofline. Thanks again!

The cob type are not waterproof, so they wouldn't be a good option for outdoors. The silicone tube type are IP67, so they are your best bet.

I'll put this video in my pocket if I decide to upgrade my under cabinet lights one day. I am using the old school stuff WS2811, WLED on a ESP8266, on/off via Voice or a Hue Wireless Dimmer Switch, attached with a 45 degree Aluminum Diffuser. It was a pain to mount those diffusers, the issue I have is WS2811 voltage drop, as power injection on the other end is not possible in my kitchen area, and so when cooking I pretty much need these lights to see well. If I redo the setup I am 99% going to want a RGBW source so I can get clean light. It has to be water resistant (cooking creates steam) so need to find something like the SuperLighting product that will fit in the silicon as compared to the BTF Lighting product.

Nice job on your videos. You get straight to the info. Have you thought about including CRI measurements. Not so important for decorative lighting but useful if you want to use the strips for task lighting.

Shit cri is really ghetto to live with. I returned a bunch of low cri lights because the white wasn't white, was some off colour dirty sock juice colour. Actually depressing to live with such lighting. So I'd say cri is highly important!

Amazingly helpful! Being new to this, I'm still a bit confused (that's on me). Could you provide a parts list of everything I would need to have 8 5m non-addressble strips simultaneously controlled by one app, so that their color and brightness would all be identical? I don't care about animation, music match or anything like that, just to make an entire room glow with the warmest, peaceful light possible. All your video do a very good comparison of products. I would like use a10mm wide aluminum channel with white diffuser that you compared a year ago and a high density LED strip 60LED/m for the under counter kitchen lighting. I paired a SP108E controller with SK6812 strip, but found the it was not compatible with Google home assistant. What would you recommend for a dimable under counter white light or RGBW solution that works with google home?

Awesome video. I do have a question about the power supply choices. Do you cut the barrels off and connect the wires directly to the Shelley or is there some intermediate connection made? I saw on another KZfaqr's page you made the comment that the barrel connectors are good up to 3A, so I assume you are not using them here. Any insight would be appreciated.

Great review. Temperature measurements would be welcome. Something tells me these "neon" silicon sleeved strips run hot, and there's literally no way to cool it. I've seen assistant sold silicon diffusers you could cream into an aluminum profile though, that might be better. They do eat brightness anyways, though. Power supplies and controllers shipped with strips are for lazy people and usually trash quality. Idle consumption of addressable strips can be addressed (he-he) with a relay. Wled has built-in support for such.

Increase LED density increase brightness. If using WS2812B you are stuck with 5v, so increasing density significantly will be an issue due to voltage drop.

I’ve been trying to connect the superlighting strip with a shelly rgbw2 controller to a 24V 200W power source but it doesn’t seem to be working… I’ve spliced the positive end of the strip with the positive end of the power source, but whenever it touches the controller the strip flickers and then dies out. The controller works fine though, the fact that it doesn’t seem to be able to connect to my phone… any ideas on what’s going on here?

Does anyone know what I would get for the carpenter to recess into shelves for a warm yellow-orange type color for a medspa floating shelf that would have a more warm calming not bright white? We have direct wiring set up to a switch. The first one they installed was an exposed wire bright white that looked the opposite of everything I saw in the intro of his videos.

I may do a deep dive on LED control in the near future. I still just can't get into ESPHome, I significantly prefer Tasmota from a user friendly aspect, and standard Arduino for custom stuff. ESPHome just feels like a weird offshoot to me, and I've found the ESPHome API to be super flaky compared to standard MQTT integration with Home Assistant.

I haven't ever tried to measure CRI. I did just buy an $800 spectrophotometer for doing projector reviews though, so I could probably do it now. I'll have to see if Calman can do CRI on its own.

It would have been good to see the addressable BTF Lighting COB 12/24V strip - looks to be a good middle ground for cost/features whilst maintaining the ability to address each "section".

I did test these 24V addressable strips from BTF after the fact: amzn.to/3V4bUtX They performed well, slightly less energy efficient than the TOPXCDZ strips, but the same addressable section size, more brightness, and the benefit of 24v, so longer runs with no voltage drop.

Great channel, learning a lot. QUESTION: Can i chain 2 5metre lengths of SK1682 leds into one 10 metre chain, obviously they will need a beefier power supply but i assume WLED can allow for this if i increase the start and end LED numbers???

Yes, you can make a 10m chain. If you are using 12v you can get away with power injecting at each end, if you are using 24V you can probably get away with no power injection, and if you are using 5V you will need front, mid and end power injection.

Question, I plan to get the BTF 24v cob strips to use as under-cab kitchen lighting and need to be able to dim it via an in-wall switch. which you think would be best. Triac dimmable driver or PWM dimming? flicker/hum free? Thanks for any input!

The best option would be to use some kind of home automation platform to sync the dimmer % with a PWM driver like the Shelly RGBW2. The easiest option and the one I'd try first, just to see if it works would be to use a dimmable 24V power supply like this: amzn.to/43gNnFH

I purchased the Superlighting strip and quickly noticed that it had troubles producing a solid red. Hmmm. Had some purple-ish color to it, or when adjusting, then had an orange color to it. Does anyone know of a bright strip that can produce a nice red color?

Are any of the silicone or COB strips trimmable? If I have a certain design that needs 4 or 4.5m instead of 5 then what are my options? Amazing video as always!

Yeah, they can all be trimmed, but the COB strips are easier to work with because they have clearly marked cut lines. The silicone strips you need to cut a little longer than you need, then carefully trim back the silicone tube until you find a cutline for the LED strip inside. Also worth noting that the silicone tube strips will no longer be waterproof if you cut them.

@@TheHookUp nice, thanks. That makes sense. For custom lengths, using a cob threaded inside a separate silicone tube like the last segment of the video might be the most customizable.

To anyone who has used Super Glue or Glue for Led Strips, do you think you can you use Clear Gorilla Super Glue on Led Strips, specifically the BTF-SK6812 with IP65! They will be installed onto a piece of metal!

I personally use warm white in my kitchen, but if I were going to do it over again I'd increase the density to 60led/m and use warm white/cool white dual channel so I could easily change color temp throughout the day.

Can anyone recommend a tunable white strip and controller. Ideally, I'm looking to use a Lutron Diva wall switch and dimmer with a dimmable LED Driver powering tunable white COB LED strips where the white color is set by Home Assistant based on the time of day and sun position in the sky. Any suggestions?

For the BTF 24v RGBW, how easy were they to cut and install the remaining pieces in a new location? I have Four nerd shelf’s for statues I want to install them on, and I’m looking for a very bright upper area. The last ones I used were the four pin connectors. These are four wires correct?

No different than any other LED strip, pretty easy to do. The RGBW ones were not from BTF, but they are 5 wire (R,G,B,W,+), the BTF 24V ones are RGB 4 wire.

I just wish these "new" COB strips came with black pcb, would be really good in my new cinema room, white pcb kinda ruins the look a bit :\

I’m struggling to find an RGBW or RGBCCT addressable COB strip with similar density. Doesn’t seem like anyone makes an addressable COB with a dedicated white. Anyone seen anything like this?

Hi Rob, thanks for your usual professional review. Regardless of spotlight, what would you go for in case of a 5m led strip for kitchen top light? Which color? How many LEDs/m? Which chip technology? 12V or 24V? Thank you very much!

5050 will get you the most variety and best price.
