Built right at the end of the Victorian era in August 1899, Caledonian Railway No. 828 is a unique survivor of a class of locmotives which once numbered 96, and is equally important as an example of a pre-Grouping Scottish Locomotive: there was no Scottish equivalent of the fabled 'Barry Scrapyard'.
Restored to steam in 1996, Number 828 is the flagship locomotive of the Strathspey Railway. They are well worth a visit:www.strathspey...

The Caledonian and North British railway may only have 3 engines each but at least they're diverse between them (a tank engine, goods engine and express engine). Looking forward to seeing more engines from Scotland in the future, even if aside from 828 and 419 the others aren't in steam (looks at 123 longingly)

The real pity is that none of McIntosh's 4-4-0's were saved by the LMS,unlike the Highland's,designed by Drummond! They had a grace,and speed to boot,and the colors were and are gorgeous! Thank you! 😇

Another beautiful video, and on my birthday no less! Thank you very much for the surprise birthday present on one of my favorite Scottish locos. One quick note that I'm surprised you didn't mention was how in 1899 St Rollox Works and CME Sir John McIntosh struck a deal with the SNCB, the Belgian State Railways, to license the 812/652 Class for construction on the Continent, resulting in the lightly modified Type 30/32, later Type 44/41, of which 2 examples survive. I also have to comment on your heartfelt but amusing attempt to blend your normal thick Geordie accent with a bit of a Scottish brogue. Well done, sir.

I did in the original script but ran out of video footage. Also the wee Scottish burr was not deliberate! I only noticed it after I'd recorded the audio, but thought meh and kept it.

That's me in the Blue jumper at 0:48 to 0:51 with the Canon camera doing a quick double take thanks for making this Anthony it's really been informative about Caledonian Railway iconic 828. The video footage was filmed at the Spa Valley Railway is part of the Scottish Steam event with 419 also from originally the Caledonian Railway the first time that both these locomotives have run outside of Scotland together. Also noticed at 1:02 the station sign for Tunbridge Wells West is in blue not green as it should be. Changed for the event due to BR regions colours for example the Old LMS territory had a dark Midland red colour the Old Southern region had a dark green and BR Scotland's colour scheme was a light blue Just like at Tunbridge Wells West for the event it was an outstanding event for the Spa Valley Railway well done to everyone who was involved.

Purely accidental. Never realised it had slipped in. It was *so* embarassing after I'd come back from Cockenzie from a three day weekend digging on the waggonway. I have a nasty habit of picking up accents.

Could you do a video on the surviving Armstrong Whitworth LMS "Jackshaft" 0-6-0 diesel locomotives still serving on the Italian State Railways?? These were built in the late 1930's. The loco was also loosely modelled as the Triang Railways / Triang Hornby R.152 diesel shunter.

Over 90 built sounds like a success. If passenger trains used Westinghouse air brakes, why didn't everybody use them?
@AnthonyDawsonHistory
@AnthonyDawsonHistory 2 жыл бұрын
Opinion was split in Britain between the Westinghouse (or other) air brake, or the Vacuum brake. Vacuum brakes were cheaper and easier to fit. In fact the first air brake had been invented in Scotland by John McInnes, an engine driver on the Caledonian Railway in 1860, pre-dating Mr Westinghouse. McInnes eventually became a Brake Inspector on the CR.

A pretty beast for sure but being a sad human I find the utilitarian form ofban Andrew Barclay or Grant Ritchie saddle tank to be something much more pleasing to the eye. Those manufacturers have some interesting and winding histories

I remember the tragic cutting up of the last of the Belgian Caleys. I also remember an episode of Dr. Finlay's Casebook where a station was renamed Tannochbrae and a BR Caley 0-6-0 being repainted, married to the preserved Caledonian coaches. I'm afraid it would take my far too long to read thro' all my bound 'Railway Worlds' to find the article about the episode!

@@AnthonyDawsonHistory One of the two heritage railways I visited. My wife had booked a lunch on board, but the day before we had an unexpected tea on the Walden Rambler and she thought I could appreciate less the SVR, so she talked about generic "industrial archeology". Leaving the bus from the former SECR station, we did the long trip around the LBSC station building so I discovered that it was another heritage railway only when I got the first glimpse of one of their diesel engines. And started floating mid-air from joy, my wife fear had absolutely no reason to be :).
