The observation deck! I had almost completely forgotten about that feature. Used to go out watch the planes with my dad and grandfather before we moved up to Rockland county. After the move we would trek out to Kennedy to pick up relatives or for outbound flights (it took about 90 minutes to go the 40 odd miles). LaGuardia was closer but mostly had shorter distance flights and Newark (pre Liberty Intl) was the craziest laid out terminal I have ever seen, like an insane crossword puzzle. The smell of the jet fuel was everywhere. Pretty heady stuff. Thanks for triggering some old memories. Another great video!

Interesting point about how different those three NY area airports were back in the day. Each had its own distinct 'personality' and layout - good or otherwise. To me, today's airport terminals all look the same. In many of them, if you didn't see the signage, you wouldn't even know what city you were in.

Another AMAZING video!!! :) I have to admit, JFK is my favorite of the three large NYC airports, but I try to avoid NYC as much as possible for many reasons. Did you know, when they renovated the TWA terminal the contractors removed nearly 100 tons of asbestos, and sandblasted all the steel supporting structure which had been sprayed with asbestos based fire retardants which hardened into a brittle drywall type material? What is even more interesting, they also found many items left behind from the original construction, including a set of plans (don't know what kind), several worker's lunch boxes (still containing "food"), and a lost wallet from 1968 (there was money, ID, and several receipts in it from an airport restaurant and a bar) which was returned to the original owner. I thought that was fascinating, especially because I have a special interest in the year 1968.

My family and I would go to Rockaway Blvd. at sunset back in the 1970's and watch the jets land right over our heads on 22L. We loved watching the jumbos jets flying low as they approached the threshold and would roar over us. Those were great times!

Thanks for your comment, and agreed - wonderful memories of Rockaway Blvd. at sunset. For me, it was the first 707s and DC-8s, but really great to see those big jets screaming right overhead. Did you ever hear the 'woosh' of the their wingtip vortices a few seconds after they flew over?

We moved from NYC to Garden City, LI in 1970. My dad took my to 150th to watch arrivals. A few years later when I was 15 or so I rode my bike all the way to JFK and found myself on the ramp watching operations. That lasted about 15 minutes until security picked me up. I found myself in a big office with some guy telling me we spend $xxxx on security, how the hell did you get out there? I was polite and feigned contrition and told him I followed a fire exit from the IAB observation deck. He had me retrace my steps and sent me home. 35 years later I was walking on that ramp as a Delta captain.

Great photo history, Mike! Many of these photos weren't commonly seen. At 1:05, the control tower shown was not temporary. It was the initial phase of the permanent control tower, as it appeared from 1952 until 1957. The middle sections were completed in 1957, and the building remained until it was closed and demolished in 1995.

Gorgeous video. I landed in, and took of quite a lot of times from JFK during my French banking career. I travelled once in 1994 with TWA (Boeing 747-200 - the same bird that tragically crashed several months after off US coasts). I fondly remember the fantastic Saarinen TWA terminal. So beautiful, so classy, so comfortable... Good that they kept it alive as a hotel. Better that what they did to the also beautiful "umbrella" terminal of Pan Am. My biggest regret : not having flown any Pan Am aircraft in my life.

Started my over 40 year career in commercial aviation at the EWR North Terminal in 1980 with PeoplExpress. Months before their first aircraft even arrived. I definitely got a taste of "the old days." When I arrived at EWR, the wing extending from the terminal that PE used for its gates was awash with old airline paraphernalia. OH! I'd full intentions of grabbing up some of stuff but, one night. One single night. The wing was cleared of everything and the construction of gate areas began. Mike! I'm fairly certain you've been where I describe. Remember the "dip" in the air wing created so vehicles could pass overhead?

Hi Mike.... great video.... included in the photo of the Sikorsky S-55 near the beginning of this video, there is a TCA (Trans Canada Airlines) Canadair DC-4M North Star on the ramp.... to differentiate from any regular DC-4s, you can see it was powered by R-R Merlin engines, the loudest engines of the day.... you could hear them long before they appeared.... I used to see them every day flying over my home.... TCA had several so seeing one at New York in this video was a joy.... you have my compliments....

Thanks Jim, and I thought about mentioning that North Star. I'll bet you and I watched the very same airplanes at each end of their journeys, as my house on Long Island was under the departure track northward from Idlewild. Vivid memories of bare-metal TCA Viscounts and the first Vanguards as well!

@@celebratingaviationwithmik9782 Thanks for your comment.... means a lot.... one you also probably saw, while the North Stars were being phased out, the TCA Lockheed Super G Constellations.... it is my favourite of all the many airliners I've seen over the years.... one example is CF-TGE, not an original TCA aircraft, restored a few years ago in TCA colours now at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.... very interesting history with photos can be found on Bob Bogash's webpage highlighting all the aircraft saved and on display.... Again, my compliments on your website....

They became the largest operator except for AF. One of the aircraft became a wo after the wing hit a light post at ARN in 1978. They got a fist full dollars for if. The captain got a bucket of screams on paper. From the CEO he got flowers and a bottle of champagne! Lol! The pic from 1984, on the left upper corner is an Airbus. I can read the logo. Fast forward 60 some years later I still go there and still plane watch for hours although most of the iconic airlines are gone , by the way I was there when Eastern flight 66 from New Orleans crashed on landing at runway 22L , That was the first and only major air disaster I actually witnessed .

A nice video and it brings back very good memories of my Mom and I doing this at O'Hare in the 1960s. At that time O'Hare had two different observation decks on the roofs of the main terminals. We would do this several times during the Summer, and some times in the Fall when the weather was good, and it was great to see the combination of the jets and prop liners at the terminals. My favorites were all of the TWA Connies that were there. These days were always fun and memorable days. My Mom was really interested in flying and loved to travel. During WW2 her dream was to become a WASP, although she was too young at the time, and the WASPs and the war ended before she would have been of age to enlist. She always loved and was interested in airplanes. Do you remember the Viewmaster Viewers? I had one of those and my favorite disks was the ones of inside and outside of the Connies. These photos made you feel you were there in person. Thank you for this video, it brought back many good memories of my Mom and I.
