Woodturning - In this video I combine Designer Epoxy and glow in the dark pigments to not only fill any voids in ths cherry burl but extend the rim making the bowl larger. I will also show my method for using as little epoxy that I can while doing this project, enjoy!

I've learned practice makes perfect. I started working on my family tree back in 1999 and just learning. Now my tree is more detailed and I go back to the beginnings some times and fix errors I made way back then. I am always learning new ways to do things so.... the more you make castings, the better you get at it. I love watching your videos and went to your play list to watch from your 1st video. I am now up to your 3rd and love watching you progress with each new video. 😊🥰 Love the purple shades you use and also love pinks and light shades of blue 🙂

I just wanted to say I’m so pleased you mentioned left handed turning. I am in fact right handed when it comes to everything, EXCEPT for turning! 😂 I’ve been struggling with bowls, but now I’ve realised that I am only comfortable turning left handed, I will try and adapt my methods accordingly. Thank you! Great work as always too! 😊

Wow, never heard of that before, lol. Get a lathe with lefthand threads on the outboard end, that way the lathe bed isn’t in your way, it way more comfortable to turn that way. Thanks!

Hi Jim,wonderful approach to increase the size of the burl bowl. P.S I have made a habit of spraying the inside of my pressure pot before each use,. Invariably there always seems to be a small amount of resin that "spays up". Also found that a soak in acetone can clean up the pot (also gauges ) Thanks again for more great ideas ! Using tuck tape on both sides of plastic prevents tearing and makes easier to form plastic plus you can reuse for future projects:>) the plastic makes a smoother finish for later when you put on the machine and helps prevent sticking while removing plastic Your the man I had to tell you the secret:>) Your still a great man, Respect from Canada 2021.

First of all, being a fellow "south paw", I like the way you point out the ways we get over the "challenges" we face and also the ways we win over these challenges. I wonder if a release agent would have worked on the pressure pot & marbles? I'd also like to add, I never had any interest in epoxies in turning until I started watching you channel. Since you had the bowl on the marbles it was pretty close to the lid, when you pressurized it, the air went straight down and blew the resin up
@SpragueWoodturning
@SpragueWoodturning 3 жыл бұрын
This is the general consensus. I still think there might of been an air pocket trapped in the base of the bowl and then spit out when pressurized, thanks. I pressurized the pot really slow but it certainly could of been it.

the problem with why the resin went everywhere is because of when you added the pressure to the pot the incoming air hit the resin splashing it. you need a way to redirect/deflect the incoming air to not hit the resin directly. Which is why if you look at some of the mold rack systems they have a top unused shelf that just deflects the incoming air to not hit the resin.

@@SpragueWoodturning when I first started resin cast in a pressure pot I had the same thing happen to me all the time. After Jake Thompson showed me that if you use a defuser at the bottoms to the top it will not blow air into the fresh resin and cause it to splatter and I no longer have issues.

Better video title: "Jim loses his marbles" :D Since you're using a resin with a really long cure time, it'll take a long time for it to fully harden. You should be able to help it along by raising its temperature a little. Regardless, the bowl turned out great!

Very beautiful! And I love the idea of using marbles for spacers and weights! I too have ran into the resin getting soft when heated..... In fact there are art resin techniques that require heating set resin, mechanically fixing desired shape, and when cooled it will hold the new shape. With all that said, leaving it to cool will reharden the resin, and be careful how hot you get it because if it can droop, it will cool as an oval rather than a round bowl 😉

The higher atmosphere pressure in the pot forces the resin into all the holes the wood has, the air is pushed up and like boiling water on high heat, when the bubbles got to the surface, they popped and sprayed the surrounding area.

Hi Jim.. what a really beautiful bowl. it looks like you’ve captured the Northern Lights in that resin 😊.. also, love that buffing system - hope I can find the same over here in the UK.. Looking forward to a possible Christmas theme.. Seasons greetings to you..

Nice technique for saving on resin. Never could understand why people turn away half of their resin

Id say the ppl turning half or more away are getting freebie samples & product to use in their videos. Resin is expensive, it’s good to use the least amount as needed. The rest of the shavings get vacuumed up.

I like the video. I like the bowl . I learn a lot by watching and your videos do a good job of walking one through all that you're doing. As a new turner, I just figured out, as of an hour ago, my 2nd hand tools are for spindles. * Sigh *

The great thing is you only need a bowl gouge and a parting tool to do inlayed bowls, safe turning! Thanks.

Jim! As always exquisite work! 💫👏🎉I like your ingenuity on saving the resin. Sorry it created a splatter effect in the pressure pot. However, Before you clean it, sit it out in the sun and put a go-pro inside it to see the cool ink spot when closed. If it works, please share the pic. 🤩 You should also consider making marble sculptures with resin! Very cool! 😎

There’s no way to clean the resin out of the pot, it’s welded itself to it. It’s now a permanent pot feature, lol. Thanks
