I love watching you turn, and seeing your finished projects - I don’t really care what you make, it’s all beautiful. You should make what puts the most $ in your pocket so that we all can keep watching you for years to come. That being said, watching you try new stuff is always fun! On another note, you don’t have to keep justifying your prices - something is worth what someone is willing to pay. But I also understand about pricing your work and having people say “What?!” I have been a knitter/crocheter/“yarn artist” for years - more than I will admit to. I’ve tried selling my work (mainly bc I love doing it so much) but people are always surprised at the cost. Machine made afghans may be $20-$30, but for me, the yarn alone is typically at least $50, and that’s not even for designer, specialty yarns. Then it takes hours and hours to knit an afghan. To make it worth it, I have to charge at least $200, and people just don’t see it or understand it. So I make what I love and gift and donate it all. It’s hard - I’d hate for artists/crafts-folk/etc to fade away, but they will if people don’t value the time and the art.

I 100% agree!!!!! I made jewelry for years and the cost of supplies, even wholesale, is a big expense and then it could take me 4-8 hours a day for about 3-8 days, depending on what I am making. People expect to pay $2 to $10! It’s insulting! No, I didn’t contract with the children & adults of China to make my jewelry. It is all made by us Designers, makers, Painters, Crafters and our time and the love and passion we put into our projects. 75%+ of people just don’t get it. Look at Jim and the cost of the Designer Epoxy alone is a huge expense. Heck, I will use just a small amount of Designer Epoxy to make some beautiful mica colored, dried flowers earrings or pendants, coasters or the trays with the two handles on top. The Designer Epoxy is my greatest expense. Then I need to take a break from Designer Epoxy projects and work on other crafting as I run out of room! 😂 We, no matter what our craft is, spend a lot of time and money on our pieces and we need to price them accordingly. Oh my goodness that is amazing. As a new Turner of 69 years young I still can't believe the things you guys can do. Your resin work just blows me away and it also encouraged me to try for myself, and if I may say with some not bad results. You also mentioned what we prefer to see you do on these videos, well as I am new I tend to turn bowls most of the time, it seems the best thing to do at this stage, but love to see you turning hollow forms. I think it helps someone like me understand different techniques. Also something you said during this video helped me, and that was sometimes when you look at the wood your turning, the shape you had in your mind just doesn't look quite right and you need to let the wood speak to you in a way. That's happened to me many times but usually it turns out OK. Thank you so much for your videos and I look forward to seeing many more. Looking forward to watching your third attempt. 👍

Starting with bowls is natural, I don’t think I even did a hollow form for the first ten years in my turning career. I started as a functional turner, then progressed to inlays, then to larger more complicated work. Thanks for watching and safe turning!

Pretty neat. My theory is you're going to have to let all the colors sit for about 14 hours then combine and pattern them just before it hardens. I think you're getting too much thermal convection boiling the colors together and making them muddy.

And, perhaps, a bit more of a delicate touch with a straight tube as you inject the different colors, with fewer, but larger injection points. You swirl at the end anyhow, so you don't need 20 injection locations. It seems pretty easy to see the excessive mixing and movement of the epoxy as you inject. Also, mix the different colors at different times based on volume so they end up in the same stage of their curing processes at injection time. Just brainstorming...

Brent has it right - there's a really short window of opportunity to get those colors combined without mixing together fully. I think I might try it on a smaller scale this weekend- see what happens.

WOW. That resin is absolutely stunning, despite the failure to separate. My 2 cents, for what its worth, mix your pots of resin and add color towards 6pm then the following morning towars 8 am start checking the viscosity. Once it's thicker and closer to that honey stage combine swirl and don't touch it at all until it's fully cured. I've used deep cast quite a bit but never this new thinner version, you might need to let it sit closer to 16 hrs before combining. Good luck with version 3.0

speaking as a fiber crafter who might never actually do "hard" crafts, i enjoy watching them made anyway! i can see where the experimentation should eventually yield the optimal time to mix each size batch so they can all be ready together after they've thickened sufficiently... in the meantime, the resultant blue-greys with the vague hints of gold or green are still really pretty!

FYI - From someone who does epoxy casting: Deep cast epoxy takes a LONG time to set. Colours will blend when put in all together at the beginning. You will need to wait for the base colour to almost set before you add/inject the other colours. I've had this problem too when casting resin projects. The best way to do this might be to cast the base colour the let that almost set till it's really really thick & sticky (not liquid) then add the next colour then wait till that is really sticky then inject the other colours. It's a matter of timing. All trial an error unfortunately. However, this casting is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! It is a STUNNING colour. The swirling is just beautiful. Of course I'm partial to blues, but this piece is GORGEOUS!

Stunning even if it wasn’t what you were hoping for. Like others have said… wait a lot longer before combining the colours, less injection sites, use a hard straight tube to inject straight up and down, the soft tube is mixing it too much, and stop playing with it😉… I’m a painter, the more I muck around with it the more muddled the colours… good luck❤️

I anticipate every video, you're amazing Jim! I was expecting this to look brownish. As a pro cake decorator, we have to make custom colors and purple and gold or yellow mixed makes brown. I am not a resin expert at all, but maybe do more green and gold? Or start out with green and gold, then add the blue and purple? Anyway, the finial looks great and the whole piece looks awesome! 💯💯💯

I wondered if the red tint in the purple mixed with the green to grey-down the blue when it all mixed (Crayola and Bob Ross art here, not professional). Still absolutely beautiful in the swirls and gradations. Hope you figure out the separations, and enjoy the trip getting there, too.

I personally prefer the bowls or platters you make over the hollow forms, purely based on a functionality standpoint, but both are stunningly beautiful. Love the swirling patterns on this one even if the color separation wasn't quite there. When you finally achieve it, I know it's going to be fantastic! Keep it up!

I agree with others here commenting, everything you do is absolutely gorgeous! For me, if you have more wood then resin, bowls and platers show off the grain and natural beauty of the wood where the resin enhances the wood. Urns and hollow forms are fantastic way to show off the complexity and storms of the resin! In my opinion!

Good evening, Jim. Incredible! I certainly share your excitement about this hollow form. Thank you for showing us your desire for the ultimate Designer Epoxy outcome. Yes, I would very much enjoy more epoxy bowls and hollow forms. The look of just wood is incredible. Adding epoxy to the wood is definitely taking it to the next level.

As for whether I prefer to see videos about bowls or hollow forms - I make bowls and have never made a hollow form. But I’ll watch and appreciate any videos you make about either. I always learn something useful.

Jim, the best thing about your artisan work is your honesty and your willingness to share the process with your viewers. I agree that your finials aren't great but I never much like finials on hollow forms anyway. I would like to see more bowls and less closed forms and probably less resin volume although I know how popular it is with folks. In general, I think you do spectacular work.

I like bowls better than hollow forms. I like that there’s another world on the inside that is visible as well as the outside. This is very pretty in spite of not being what you had intended.

The designs show so well on bowl and lid production, but this was the first time i saw this finial hollow form design, and with the wood on the bottom and the wood up top and the swirled resin, it is awesome!

As far as preferences…. I love to see the hollow forms after the fact, with the light illuminating from within. The turning process of the hollow isn’t as satisfying to watch as the turning process of the bowls though…. Honestly my favorite part is to see the patterns and colors in the epoxy after being turned away. Let’s make that third attempt at the peacock pattern a giveaway bowl 👍🏼 Designer Epoxy

Epoxy resin is crazy beautiful. Myself, I like the bowls better than the hollow forms. I tend to like to show the beauty of the inner bowl sides. Plus I get bored hollowing out hollow forms because nobody will see it.

I'm being a little sporadic about how I go through all your videos, but I believe that the Peacock hollow form 1.0 was the first I watched. Kinda been hooked since :) The swirl patterns in the resin are reminiscent of storm clouds when a particularly violent thunderstorm is brewing. I agree with some previous comments about the need to let the resin sit for a greater time frame before combining them so that there's less chance they'll muddy into each other. A lady I know uses a turkey baster, of all things, and some larger gauge medical syringes when the base color resin is starting to thicken up prior to setting. She mixes the other colors and "pipes" them into the thickening resin, squeezing trails of the thinner resin into the much thicker medium, and while the curing takes longer due to the different thicknesses, the swirl patterns she achieves are rather spectacular. Might be worth testing out to see if it works with a higher volume of resin. Yes, the filial is a little heavy, but it lends a feeling of majestic sturdiness. The whole piece is amazing.

Another gorgeous piece! I have to say; I really didn't think I was gonna like this one. But then I started seeing the potential coming through. Then I thought the little wooden piece was going to ruin it. Truthfully, I'm not really familiar with the concept. But once again, I ended up really loving how it turned out! I can see that piece in my house. Great work, sir!

Smiled about the comment on "hearing the rain", hold my beer, I'm English! I love peacock colours in anything, the figuring on the bowl may not be what you were aiming for BUT as Bob Ross used to say, "there are no mistakes in art, just happy accident. This happy accident is beautiful. I would love to see you have another go soon though, soon and a deep shallow bowl with peacock feather figuring would be beautiful.

Damn Jim, one day I hope my plans going out the window turn out as stunning as yours. I’ll know then I that I’ve become top notch at wood turning. As for which I’d like to see more of, bowls or hollow forms. Keep doing whatever you want, it’s your channel. It always turns out amazing and I’m always learning new things from your weekly videos. Plus it’s seems to have worked well for you so far as your subscriber base just keeps growing. Also you are the first and only KZfaqr I have ever subscribed to if that means anything Ty for doing what you do and I am sure you will figured out the peacock colours yet.
