Woodturning - In this video I use some red oak that's well past its prime combined with some deep purple tinted resin to make a very interesting vase. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it done this week but it gives my subscribers a very unique way to interact with me and tell me how to finish the top. Thanks for watching!

Jim, if the curves were more balanced, I would definitely say resin, but with on wing dipping farther down, I would have to say go for a wood rim. The great thing about this conundrum is that you can take it slowly and see how it evolves as you are taking it down. You may be surprised with the results.

I love your channel me and my wife have watched everyone of your videos to the end. Just a lesson I learned about wearing gloves. I was a machinist for a long time. As well as wood turning. I have seen 3 people loose arms because of gloves. The gloves get even slightly grabbed can suck your hands into the tooling and cause severe injuries. I machined wood, steel, carbon, graphite, both mill and lathe. It is a matter of personal choice. But that choose can be costly. I like to make sure everyone knows what can happen. Thank you for sharing. Designer epoxy.
@SpragueWoodturning

Metal lathes are unforgiving and I bet most of the really nasty injuries are on it. It can happen with a big powerful wood lathe too, but in my case, my lathe would stall as it’s on belts like most wood lathes. Gear to gear lathes are powerful! Thanks for the warnings!

Jim - I’ve had similar problems with entrapped air when I pour the resin on top of a branch inlay and then count on the air bubbles working their way out through the layer of epoxy. I’ve pretty much eliminated this problem by using a pipette (mini turkey baster) to squeeze the epoxy in at the bottom of the piece through one of the gaps between the branches. This effectively pushes the air out as the resin is squeezed in at the bottom. This also works well to fill deep holes like one you stuck your screwdriver into.

I think resin! It doesn’t matter that it’ll be thinner on one side than the other, that’ll be part of this bowls charm. The fact that the rim will be all purple will “tie it all together”. It’s going to be a beauty! 🙂🌸

Love your work, Jim! I think the unevenness of the epoxy rim could add more charm to an already lovely piece. I say leave it. If you absolutely HATE the look then take it back to the wood. I only know what I know, which isn't much, but one thing comes to mind. Completely different process, different everything; but in plumbing, every drain needs a vent. How to apply that to any of this is beyond me, since your fluid becomes more solid, and you want keep the material; and to purge air requires cycles of constant circulation which negates much of what you look for in finish; I imagine I'm overthinking again, no coffee yet!! Beautiful work Jim, thank you as always.

You could be right, but I’m pretty sure it the outer oak piece was stabilized first it wouldn’t take resin away from the branch area leaving voids behind. I have another piece of oak exactly like this one and will try that theory in the future. Thanks ☕️☕️

Absolutely love your work, and the format of your channel Jim. Personally I've just got too much OCD for the resin rim.... if it were me, and I already knew I was grinding anyway, I'd just take I down to the wood. It keeps the piece primarily about the wood, and the resin as an extraordinary accent... it conceals the fact that it was a casting too, leaves you wondering if it were just an epic inlay. But I differ to the judgement of the master!

Never mind hanging out talking about turning, I want to be Jim’s friend for some ice cream!! Great tip regarding the shoulder of the glue block tenon too. FWIW, I think taking the rim down to the wood will look best in this interesting piece. Thanks Jim!

I use Superclear and had the power go out while a pour was in the pressure pot. The temp dropped close to freezing in my shop and the pour came out very tacky and somewhat squishy. I warmed up the shop and after three weeks (to be sure) the epoxy fully cured and turned out to be one of my favorite bowls. Love your videos, I wouldn't be turning, especially with resin projects if I hadn't found your channel.

Awesome project so far, Gary,Papa 1942 uses denatured alcohol on the hot melt glue, letting it sit on there for a few minutes, then it peels right off. I have tried this too it works really well. Maybe try that when you have a repair job to do on holes too big for UV resin. As far as rhe rim goes I love the epoxy, but I agree with you it would be a real challenge to get it even. The dark rim would look great too.

I love the curve of the top, I’m glad you are leaving it. I think I’m ok with the proportion of resin above the wood being different on the 2 sides. I really like the resin above the wood. But to be honest, you have such a fantastic eye, I think I trust your creative eye over mine.

Hi Jim, I think removing the resin from the rim would look better. Something I learnt from Gary on his KZfaq channel "ThePapa1947" is that you can remove hot melt glue by dabbing it with denatured alcohol and leaving it for 5 to 10 minutes. The alcohol gets under the glue and it peels away easily. Thanks for another great video.

Have been a big fan of the branch inlays since I first saw you use them with soapstone. This is a unique take on it. I'd like to see the epoxy rim; if you don't like it, you can always turn it away.

I was having this very debate with the deep cast that just arrived this week. Whether I needed to bring the pressure pot and compressor inside, out of the garage, to get a warmer area to work in. You've basically summed up all the research I was going to have to do in the span of a minute here :D
