Thanks Mike! Just did a hot roof with a Froth-Pak.... Can I add that to your list of lessons learned. Not worth it! I happen to be starting a rig in a month I hope and will do the rest then. But for anyone else out there thinking I only have 600 sq/ft to do, I'll just use a froth pak. Stop. Hire a pro, it is well worth your dollars. The mess, the inconsistency, the conditions needing to be right, and the mixxing tip always plugging up. I know I won't ever do one again, but I hope it helps someone else avoid that mistake as well. Really loving the channel! Thanks Mike!!!

We had a closed cell spray done on the crawl space under cabin. HOLY cow how nice it is, keeps the moisture out from migration into the living space. We had the joist bays done full 2" and faces, AND cheeks of every board lightly coated for moisture excusivity.

18 years in insulation. 15th year of installing spray foam. We do not tape, unless it's a finished surface, otherwise we scrape. 98% closed cell. We have gotten to a point that we can keep scraping to a minimal. No prep crew and many times we work solo. From additions to large scale commercial. A lot goes into spray foam that doesn't get realized and you have to keep your head on a swivel all the time. Nice video.

I agree personally I would never use tape and I get very little on the studs I rarely have to do any shaving with open cell. Those walls are looked down there flush to the stud with at least 70% of the skin left on it we're not perfect lol

Another informative video Mike, nicely done. Definitely critical information about hidden problems. Not something the average homeowner would even think about and most builders don't even care about as it is not "their problem". I hate that attitude in a builder since every one is supposed to be working for me the homeowner!!

It is interesting to see the issues you have to figure for up north. I'm in Austin Texas, so humidity and dew points are big. Wind isn't usually very high, but if the windows are open there is a chance that there is a layer of dew on everything and that can shut a day down. We also don't spray nearly as much close cell down hear so the labor to clean studs is way lower. But on occasion we will do a house in close cell, so the tape trick is very helpful.

Here's another simple yet important learning tip: Not everyone can afford spray foam. Yes, it's the best. Yes, we want to be the heros and help everyone step into the 21st century and save energy. However, throwing in prep time for free will always bite you. Ignoring the time expense and mental strain on the employees that are dealing with unique and difficult builds (because your guys are awesome and can handle it) is a sure way to lose production and turn profit margins into flatlines or red digits. Last simple reminder...your employees don't want to be there as much as you want them there. Treat them well, be kind and understanding, and they will go out of thier way to make you more money and grow your reputation. Thanks Mike, great subject. 🔥

In windy situations with open window holes I would put either heavy cardboard or wood panels over the holes and fasten on. Any kind of expendable plywood or OSB will do nicely.

I've been spraying 20 plus years now and it's hard to Admit when you're wrong I started off at a medium sized company in central Florida using the original problem (probler) gun we didn't have techs to call or have the conveniences we have these days so I learned the hard way. The previous commenterwas right saying a lot goes into it that isn't realized I always welcome anyone that criticizes my work because I do a lot of free lancing to come out and see what happens and what goes on if the equipment isn't correct And you don't have exactly what you need. I've done some very large projecyss 3 federal courthouses a couple of military bases a couple of hospitals Is several fruit packing warehouses and I can't count how many residential houses. I used to own my own company and had 2 rigs and I plan on getting back there again but for right now I travel around spraying for numerous companies

I remember climbing around on the skeleton on this turret that had the same ceiling and some of the boat bottom great room, and the bottom of the turret was a spiral staircase to a sublevel, accessing alot of the fireblocking ended up being just climbing studs. The turret was scary, had to put on a fall arrest harness with no anchor while site manager was around

Excellent information! I’m considering this on my home. I want to remove the cement board shingles to expose the bay and spray closed cell foam. It’s hot here in Las Vegas and I’m just trying to keep the house cooler. Fabulous tip about taping over the wood. Prep work is everything. I’ve never done this before, do you think this is something the average homeowner can do or not? Thanks.

Where there is a will, there is a way.😊 If you pin the wheels on and apply the breaks then you can use the braces to hold the one end up while you pur the other end on the braces.then add 2 planks,or 3 to safest. Then put your next 2 end pieces up on the plnaks and prop your braces up where you can reach them. Don't forget the pins and connectors. You get the rest.😂

Thank you, have a job in our attic coming up. Installer stated 1"closed cell then 12" of blow in. I think he said 57 r value (Maine). Sound legitimate? Ceiling below it tin and zero insulation ( attic is vented)

How wide is the packing tape you are using to cover the stud edges? At a certain point will the thickness of the overspray compromise the integrity of the tape? If it folds over the edge it seems like it would be hard to remove.

Nice video! Is it okay to do 2” of ccsp directly to roof deck then do ocsp directly over it to the desired r-value (R-38 in my case)? I’m in climate zone 5, will have an ERV, and unvented attic spaces obviously.

Not unless one of the suppliers has done the proper vapor drive analysis to confirm that will work. You need sign offs for these things otherwise you are guessing.

Hello, great channel. I had my attic sealed with closed cell spray foam. Question, my spray foam contactor shoved fiberglass insulation into the cavity where my roof soffits are then spray foamed over it. The spray foam isn't covering the top plate that my 2nd story ceiling joists are sitting on. Should I complain? I would have never noticed if I hadn't taken down the ceilings in my bedroom for renovations.

@mattd9171 very common practice. What matters is that the foam ties into the top plate of wall and ceiling.

I’m getting ready to build in the western part of Virginia. I went with poured concrete walls for the basement. Any idea which foam is the best for that type of construction? And anyone know of a reputable spray foam company that services Augusta County Virginia? Also, very good points in this video that I will adhere to in my construction process. Thank you.

Question: I have a 30x30 metal shop that is set to be insulated with open cell spray foam in a few weeks. Sometimes when it rains I have leaks here or there. Is open cell a bad idea?
@ondeathsedge7278
@ondeathsedge7278 Жыл бұрын
That's like tying a sponge to a leaky tap. Only an expensive one. Even closed cell which is better will only help for so long. You really should fix the roof. It will slowly fill the open cell and peel it off once it gets heavy enough... closed cell it will last bit longer but it will get behind the closed cell and work its way down and into your walls. Your sprayer should tell you this and if its wet it should fail moisture test anyway. Goodluck
