The second video in my Sprinter Van Build series I install spray foam insulation in my van. I also insulate the van with Thinsulate, and Noico Red closed cell foam pads. I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Spray foam vs Thinsulate vs Noico Pads.

You do it right, you don’t cut corners, well done! I just heard this last week, “hard choices easy life easy choices hard life”. Bit more pricey upfront but you’re not going to regret it in the years and years ahead of this Beautiful vans life! And once again excellent some work! Really looking forward to the next one!

I say?? VERY GOOD job!!! :) ... I am going to use cans of spray foam for the wall between the cab and the back of the van .. and full giant sheets of Styrofoam (with foil on each side), and spray cans for the sides of the back of the van. The ceiling has stock insulation I will leave alone ... I don't know what insulation it is (looking online to learn today) .. but I WILL spray the gap between the metal ceiling and the plywood walls at some point! :) Mine is a nice square 1990's StepVan So it should be uncomplicated :) .. but I'm sure I'll run into something along the way! :)

You might want to pull all your exterior trim off to silicone behind it now that you plugged up the drain holes in the wall panels. The sprinters already have rust issues and water will get behind the spray foam and rust your panels. So you should do everything you can do to prevent moisture from getting in.

Ian Memory very valid point Ian, though Sikaflex or similar is more flexible and less affected by extremes of cold or heat than silicone and remains less ‘set’

007nadineL yes ask Troy from van life tech. Also, humble road has a video where he pulls the trim off and silicones behind them. It is especially an issue with the old sprinters. Time will tell with the newer sprinters.

Not criticizing but Id like to make some observations so anyone contemplating van insulation will know... 1.) Those steel structural supports are physically touching the exterior of the van. So thermal energy will transfer into the interior via the metal. You'll want to spray your foam at least an inch over the surface of those beams to get a decent thermal envelope. 2.) Windows are thermal gaps and the cab of the van has a lot of them. If you want good climate control you'll want to wall off that area (with a door of course) and have at least 3 inches of foam separating the cab from the rear. The cab will act like a green house. That might be good in northern climates but in more southerly climates you'll be waaaay too hot. 3.) You're going to want to spray foam a few inches thick over the wheel wells. Those are mad of thin metal leading directly to the noisy exterior of your van! You'll want to build a wooden or plastic box to go over the wheel well, then fill the space with foam.

I'm thinking about doing a similar Van Build. There seems to be a lot of Waste with the Spray Foam. It makes me think if Someone sprayed the Top of the Van First, Let it Dry, Cut the Scrap off, Put as much of the Dried Scrap Foam into the Lower Wall Cavities (perhaps with a thin coat of foam in the Cavities first, leave wet), the fill the gaps with more of the Foam.

Heads up people - rigid foam has fantastic R-value but the density allows sound to travel through it... any type of batting material such as even cheap fiberglass has a very good sound deadening quality but often has the negative side of being able to hold moisture.

Nice job and a well insulated van. Maybe you applied the foam too heavily. A small test area prior to tackling the whole interior may have been wise . Leaving it a full twenty four hours to fully cure would have told you if the spray coating was too much or too little. But a great result even if it worked out a little expensive.

@@shaunwilkens the trick is to bolt the wood-beams besides/along/in parallel to the metal roof beams, and not on top of them as another layer. Then do a real thin layer of plywood/vineer, instead of paneling or hardwood. And if you do floor heating, you could do with thinner floor insulation, and/or do the finish in carpet or floor vinyl instead of hardwood paneling/floorboards as many do. I observe usa and Australia does a lot of hardwood finished. It just takes up space and often weigh a lot.

I just watched a video where an RV dealer that builds out Vans said they tried three different times to use foam insulation with different mixtures including help with the company coming to their shop but every time they used it it affected the skin on the outside of the van and made it Ripple and such has anybody noticed this?
@shaunwilkens
@shaunwilkens Жыл бұрын
@Just Judy It didn’t effect the skin on this van. I could see it effecting vans that have the big panels where the windows and flares in this van have been cut out. There isn’t much supporting those panels structurally.

There’s no distortion that I can see. I imagine if I were spraying wide panels I’d end up with distortion. I think I avoided that since my window panels either have flares or windows in them and the lower sections have a lot more structure supporting them.
