I have the 9.5 Graco also 10 yrs old , you really dont need to warm them up, they get warm enough as you spray for even 5 min. Get a plastic 1 gallon bucket to pour and stir before putting that much material into those small cup , leave some product left over to fill cup so your not stopping in the middle of a door and would need to remix more material. That air adjust is really for Multispec, which dials down the material so it sprinkles specs for a decorative effect. And the air adjust lets you spray out for cleaning the leftover material with no air. Tip sizes are the only real adjustment to material flow volume. The turbine air must usually stay the same just to get a decent spray pattern depending on viscosity of different materials. The only time I would turn air down might be very light stains, varnish etc. You may know a lot of this so forgive me, I just add my experience in here for guys new to these somewhat unusual machine compared to simple airless operation I started in the 70's with the more crude HVLP turbine units Your Graco FFLP tip were the game changer. One thing my brother, your starting out right on bidding, 48 yrs ago when I started, I didnt try to do sq footage or per door pricing. I went to the job, calculated my helper costs, my labor , materials and just how many days needed , and how much per day I needed to be competitive. Your a sharp guy, you will do well. I grew so much when I adopted techniques and patching materials from the autobody industry. Are you using that Red autobody glazing ? They have white glazing non catalyzed , works better. You tint it slightly so you can see it over white primer. That red glazing is for pin holes in autobody finishing, water base paints might slide off or fisheye over it, it must be re primed with oil base primers Just look over those cabinet doors at an angle with a good light to see low spots. By the way , are you in Calif ? i'm from Santa Barbara, great climate and a good state to setup your shop outside if needed Remember since you do thin the paint as I still do, no one is forcing you to put a heavy wet coat for your first topcoat, go light. For your second coat, only spray your medium wet coat after the water dries out of the first coat (slightly tacky) The second coat will surely re-wet the second coat melting into it With that blending, you will get the flow needed to rid yourself of most orange peel and reduce the chance of runs if you were applying too heavy a FIRST COAT. In the 80's ,the acrylics were new, but great, I could spray a french door, second coat it in an hour, and close it against the rubber weather stripping in a few hrs. The paint wouldn't pull off. Now ,for me, its all about good ,soft edge spray patterns, don't thin too much, and layering coats. But as you said, all depends on the bid, and if sprayed thick to get your price and get finished on time, it might please the customer very well, even if there is a fine orange peel .

I mightve missed it in the video but what needles did you use for the paint and what needle for the shellac primer? Do you do two coats primer, sand after primer, then 1 coat paint, sand and then 2nd coat? Thanks brotha!

Another tip: Find an old hand held electric egg beater. Insert a beater arm into a cordless drill to stir the paint. It actually has less surface area than a paint stick, so not only does it mix faster, there’s less paint to wipe off after mixing.

Thanks for sharing and doing this video. My question is what you put the air-flow adjustment at in relation to material flow. No one seems to talk about this. If you put the Material flow at 5, is the air flow higher than that or lower? And I noticed you mentioned that you adjust the air flow as the paint level goes down during spraying. Do you mean that you'll raise the material flow and the air flow? Just overall unclear on these settings. btw. I own this sprayer but I am new to this. Thanks.

I myself like using a 208 fflp/210 fflp for the smaller surfaces like the faces of the box frames. And drawer panels. I like using 308 fflp /410 fflp for larger surfaces like the door panels. Reason being is so when I Spray the material I don't overlap to much and layer to thick with let's say a smaller tip. I want light even coats.

Dude, if you’re spraying waterborne, spend $5 and buy the rubber red cap that goes over the gallon can to pour the paint and not make a mess. If you’re for certain going to use the entire gallon, no need, but when you have paint left over, using the cap keeps the can and top circular ribs looking brand new and avoid dried latex that may fall into the paint. Yes, I know you filter, but still….

One question. I'm a painter as well. When you hang doors like that, do you have to drill holes on the side of the doors? I used a different method of drying. That's why I was just wondering. Hit me back. Thank you.
@paintlife1904
@paintlife1904 Жыл бұрын
I do drill holes where when they get reinstalled they can't be seen. I label the door to go exactly as the are. I also fill in files at the end and touch up the holes. Can't see them and comes out clean. Hanging the doors for me just makes it easy to spray both sides of the door panels at the same time. Less mess with laying on dry racks and scuffing the finishes.

@@billbrusky1020 I used a #4 tip and thinned 10%. Adjusted turbine & air flow to desired paint flow & pattern (on a test sheet of cardboard). Worked great. ... Also, I drilled 2 small holes on the bottom edge of the lower cabinet doors & drawers, and on the top edge of the upper cupboard doors, and screwed in large cup hooks, spaced just far enough apart to hang on a heavy duty plastic coat hanger. I hung the door/drawer to paint, then moved it to a closet rod that I suspended from the ceiling with some rope where they could hang dry. The holes will never be seen so don't need to be filled. It worked well and was cheap!

@@ptortland Sweet. I just sprayed my 2nd coat with the #4 and thinned material. Worked much better than the #5 set. However now I have to control my arm speed - no dials for that though! Two small skins look great because I started with them and moved slowly to get good coverage. But the two larger skins will need a light sanding and another coat because I moved too quickly and didn't get adequate paint on to level out. Dang operators!

@ptortland Жыл бұрын
@@billbrusky1020 As my late father-in-law used to quip, "It's a poor workman who blames his tools!"😆 But indeed, finding the ideal arm speed takes practice, but also is affected by the nature & viscosity of the material you're spraying. Good luck!

my SW Rep said you don't need to prime with this product....trying to get your opinion. Going over oak cabinets that have been poly finished.

I prime oak cabinets always to prevent stain bleed through and also to add a layer of paint to fill in grain

@@paintlife1904 thanks for responding. These are high end cabinets. Smooth, no raised or texture. Only reason for trying Emerald was not having to prime. If I have to do that I’ll just go back to Benjamin Moore Advanced

Nice Work!!!! What SW primer would you recommend for for cabinet prep prior to applying the Emerald finish coat? Looking for a quality primer that requires minimal sanding. Appreciate your help on this. Cheers...

Emerald is self priming. Of course the cost per gal is more, but it will stick to anything so perhaps just a cheap latex primer would work for you.

Tried that with the Urethane but it's a no go. Won't get down to the viscosity I need it to be at to spray the cabinets.
