Trinity Dairy

Жыл бұрын

The white stuff has fallen at Trinity Dairy. Before the temps really start to fall, it's time to clean the manure from the two heifer barns. The Case 830 and Minnesota 135 Manure Spreader are enlisted for the job at hand. While we're cleaning, Alan is busy planning building repairs for the older buildings on the farm. After all the barns have been cleaned, Alan shares how the new chopped straw big squares are working as bedding in the dairy barn. We finish off the video by sharing some special viewer mail.

Trinity Dairy was established in 2006, in Minnesota. Alan and Jennifer farm with their 5 children; Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Joshua, and Jason. We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. Subscribe today to watch our small family dairy farm and family grow while continuing to thank our Lord for the blessings we've been given.

I've worked extensively on a few barns, here's what I learned- if you use cable make sure you have a lot of turnbuckle left to make future adjustments because that cable will slowly stretch like crazy under heavy load, a good chain wont give nearly as much. I spent a summer helping a neighbor pull a bank barn back up the hill about 6 ft with cables, you'd pull 3 ft and after a week it would lose 1.5 feet of gain. As far as foundations sliding down the hill, it's easier to dig large holes every so often on the lower side of the wall and pour concrete pillars if your not interested in jacking up the barn removing the wall and starting from scratch. When a building starts settling for decades, it's almost like going against laws of nature to pull it back into place and keep it there; it's a lot easier to brace it and secure it so where it currently is at is as far as it will go.

For the foundation issue on your barn you could probably drill a hole through the outside edge into the slab then insert concrete lag bolts every foot or so pound them in then tighten down the nuts. Probably would need a good-sized washer/backing plate to distribute the load while tightening. Just an idear on drawing it in and holding it

Looks like you have a few inches of snow there, same as us. I always find it interesting the history of the old buildings. There was a time when a lot of our buildings had cables running this way and that to try to keep them "square". We have most of them replaced/repaired now. Everything gets repaired in good time. Minnesota equipment built by inmates in Stillwater??? Wow, as far as I know, the best Wisconsin can do is license plates and lately not such good ones.

Ditto on the cat on a hot bale lookout. Glad you had a break from filming. Being a creator is another job now. The foundation and wall gap, not seeing it in person, I will suggest the option of a shop vac to aid the clean out of dirt. I had a lawn customer use a shop vac to clean dirt out of his lawn that washed into it. A second example of this was in October when a neighbor lost power. Xcel determined a bad section of power line in the driveway. It was already torn up for repaving, and a vacuum truck was brought in and sucked the dirt out to create an access trench to replace a section. Anyway, thanks for reading and do as you need to fix the barn.

They have companies with high pressure foam trucks that drill holes in and lift sunken patios. That would work for you I bet but of course you will do the wall youself and it will be just fine. I would recommend just bracing the outside of the wall with a heavy duty structure like they used on those old cathedrals in Europe. Regards to all who read this.

Always something to do. Them old barns are worth the effort to get back in shape. Take a small fortune to build them now a days. I could use 6 more months of nice weather, but I say that every year, and still wouldn't be done with everything. Our world gets pretty small this time of year with chores. Take care, enjoy the family while they are young.

Alan, your comments on all the Minnesota Products that were made at Stillwater State Prison brought back fond memories of one of my favorite, now deceased uncles. He spent a "tour" there in prison for counterfeiting money. Maybe he had a hand in making your spreader, lol. He learned to be a very good welder, among other things.

You are fortunate that winter spreading is still allowed. Dairy farmers in Ontario are not allowed to spread manure on top of snow or on frozen ground. I know what you mean about dust while shaking out bedding. I have developed a breathing problem from the dust working in the tie stall barn my whole life, and I wish I had worn a dust mask when bedding stalls or feeding chop to cows. As you said, you only need look at the dust that settles on top of the milk line, that’s what we breathe too.

OK... time for me to learn something here. What are "switch" cows? I grew up around corn and beans... and not cows. I've learned more about cows here than I ever knew. I suspect it is something such as "dry" cows. Yet another term that I didn't understand, but it makes perfect sense now. LOL.

Our barn holds 33 cows, but we may end up with more than our barn will hold this winter, so when we're milking we'll switch out cows in the barn to make room for milking cows that may have to stay in the old barn to get them milked.

@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy Жыл бұрын
It was the original dairy barn. It's housed loose cattle for 30 years now. The manure isn't why the walls need fixing. The barn is in the lowest spot in the yard, and in the spring, all the water from the yard washes along the foundation. It used to run in the building until I did dirt work to bank it up.
