We've just put my grandma in a senior living center, and trying to clear out her house looks a lot like this. "We need to throw all of this away. But you can't throw that chair out; someone might want it again someday. You can't throw those papers out; no one's gone through them since 1968 and there might be something important in there. You can't throw that picture out; it hung for many years in the home of a distant relative who died before any of us were born."

When my grandfather died, he had hundreds (maybe even thousands) of empty matchboxes in his possession. He also didn't believe in banks, so my mum and her siblings had to open each matchbox to make sure that there wasn't any money stuffed inside. That was all in vain, but in various other hiding places around the house they found $8000.

This is why I believe in "Swedish Death Cleaning." It's just polite not to leave your loved ones burdened with clutter. Every year, especially the older you get, you whittle your belongings down to only purposeful things and things you KNOW someone will actually WANT after you're gone. Having less things helps you to be able to manage your own household easier as you age, too.

Very representative of real life. The father is keeping old manuals for appliances the family no longer have. The granny is giving Darren a birdhouse when he clearly isn't interested. The mother is just dumping out things without asking others or listening to their words. The daughter is wineing over a teddy bear she never knew she had. And poor Darren doesn't want to get rid of anything anymore all because he has no control over what he can keep or get rid of. Good job with the sketch.

We use this phrase in my house when it‘s time to had down a nice piece of clothing the children really loved. It means we‘d like to see others when they‘re wearing it, even though we are done with it, and that won‘t happen if it just goes to charity.

I love the McCormacks! My secret to dealing with my family of hoarders is to take stuff to charity shop or throw it away SECRETLY. If the stuff was in the attic or the cellar the is a high chance they will NEVER realise it has gone ;) Stuff "on display" is much harder - one has to negotiate...

I'm exact opposite, I throw too much away. I've had to dig important documents out of the bin in the past. It's gotten better now, but I do have one rule. If I haven't used it in a year, I'm not keeping it unless it's classic literature, designer clothing, or basic good quality cooking utensils. I will sometimes sell clothing, if it has bad memories attached to it. I can't stand clutter and I hate dusting. If you've got no knick-knacks, there's less to dust. Greeting cards, mourning cards and birth announcements get binned after a week. I do regret getting rid of all my cd's. I can't find the music on my laptop anymore.

Recently got a new (to me) car and cleaned out the trunk of the old one. I threw away my old cleats (falling apart and caused me to break a toenail), old shinguards (literally molding and haven't been used in 3+ years), and the socks for them (worn through in the heel). I put them in a bag and straight in the big green garbage can without telling anyone (just cleaning the garbage out of my car as I switch). A few days later I was looking at all the junk in our garage and I found a familiar looking bag with a pair or ratty cleats, moldy shinguards, and torn up socks...

Ah yes, the spring cleaning. My family was the other side of the spectrum on that: my dad would just throw out eveything, and then we'd lack stuff we needed. I like the absolute chaos the McCormacks are producing, and you can rewatch those sketches quite a few times, to figure out how the costume changes were made. As for the underwear, well, if previous sketches are any indications, Mary is definitely going to be looking down there. So, you know might want to change them, Patrick. (There, done getting invested in those fictional characters' life. But it's not entirely my fault, it's FAH's for being good at inventing likeable characters!)
