@Mia Smith Let me tell you a story. One time I was visiting my German grandparents, now deceased, they were then in their 80s. I used to get to see them very rarely. I was veggie at the time already but I decided I did not want to ask them to make anything special for me so I would just eat whatever they served. So my granny duly made beef stew, and I ate it and pretended to like it. When we had all finished, my granny said "Well, you know, MP, we do not usually eat meat very much, but since you are here we thought we would make some nice beef stew just for you". 🤣

This is pure gold. 😂 When my husband and I started eating a vegan diet, suddenly our entire immediate and extended family became experienced nutritionists who knew we were going get a severe protein or vitamin deficiency and ruin our health, and of course were convinced there was nothing substantial we could eat. So many times my husband would get asked, "Are you sure you don't want some salmon patties? Are you sure you want the black bean tacos instead of chicken?" We were even told once that it was pagan/new age and completely against our religion to be vegan... 😮

@@Nemesis-pe7mw That's true, a lot of people don't plan a vegan diet well. But dietetics is my field of study in college and I spent 6+ months researching how to plan a vegan diet well before we tried it. Soo the family remarks were frustrating, haha.
@Nemesis-pe7mw
@Nemesis-pe7mw 2 жыл бұрын
@@hannahmayhorn5466 I can understand. Although I classify most family remarks as frustrating tbh :P Personally I am of the opinion that since we are omnivors eating meat is a thing we do. We just consume WAY to much of it and the animals we eat are often teated badly. As a meat lover I am no stranger to eating to much meat (although we are continuously trying to eat less and less meat). I just get really annoyed by the stupid reasons some people have for doing certian things. Like not drinking animal milk because they think it hurts the cows. I regularly relax near a free range farm for dairy and it's so much fun seeing the cows get up to walk up to the milking machine and queue to get milked.

Most also turned into dieteticians who of course know it all and I often end up looking like an asshole needing constant lecturing about what is the right way :D I feel you are bad as long as you are doing something different than the people around you, no matter what it is. well, tbh, I would do the same. If you decide you are vegan, you need to know exactly what you can and cant eat. Being supportive doesnt mean they have to change what they cook, does it? So of course, you will have to cook your own food if you dont wanna eat what is cooked?

Ahh, in Orthodox Russian church we have 4 very strict fasting periods, especially before Easter, so it's more than enough for me :) nothing that contains meat, fish, milk, eggs. I cannot imagine who can do that 365 days a year?? 😄
@OlgaPogozheva
@OlgaPogozheva 4 жыл бұрын
@Tinnu yeah I know?.. as I age, I find it easier not to eat certain products (like meat), but I love fish and eggs and that is what's the toughest! Actually, the fasting is about banning the products you enjoy the most :) e.g. if you love tea, then no tea for you :) even though it's generally allowed. But that's only for those who follow all the rules. Then again? All the food that we eat become less and less organic, both meat & veggies. So you can never rely on anything now, have to double-check whatever you're eating!

Stages of transitioning to plant-based and family’s reaction: 1. - I’m avoiding meat now. - i get it! I’ll make you some chicken. 2. - I’m fully vegetarian now. - good thing we have salmon/tuna. 3. - I’ve been vegetarian for two years while living in your house. - have some bone broth soup, I removed the meat, so it’s fine now. 4. - I’m still vegetarian for three years now, still living at home. - are you sure you don’t want some soup? It’s very healthy! 5. Friend: I made this quinoa veggie salad for you since you’re vegetarian. Me: (bites into chicken piece that did not taste like a veggie) Is there meat in here? Friend: I fished all the chicken pieces out. Maybe I missed one? Me: why didn’t you tell me that? Friend: I didn’t think it mattered since I didn’t cook it with the chicken. Me: 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6. Me: what do you have with no meat? Waitress: this bean stew has no meat. Me: (finds cured bacon piece in stew) I thought you said there was no meat? Waitress: oh that’s just for flavoring. 7. - I’ll just eat the side dishes... these baked potatoes and grilled veggies look amazing! - yea, we cook those in animal fat. - 😳 I’ll just have lettuce then. 8. - hey, I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be having the vegetarian menu at your wedding and please make sure it’s gluten free as I’m gluten intolerant - oh... um... can you just send me a list of foods you can eat? - literally everything else - like what? - all veggies, legumes and all gluten-free grains - can you be more specific? - um... just tell your chef to make a vegetarian gluten free menu. They know what to do. - okay, I will! - (comes to wedding: vegetarian menu is not gluten-free because she couldn’t be bothered to tell them... I didn’t know so I ate the “rice” packed with barley and had to leave the wedding early due to pain and discomfort) The number of times these moments happened. 🙄

well, society is not ready for meatlessness, obviously. Although I think some of these cases are quite okay, like the frying part (7), others like 8 are obviously not, but maybe they misunderstood...Also in 8 it is indeed not that easy for anyone who doenst care what they eat to understand what exactly gluten free is, and vegetarian ;)

My aunt, a rather timid woman, immediately changed around her whole kitchen to conform to the new restrictions. My mother, made of sterner stuff, gave me a kindly, knowing look and said it was too bad I would no longer be able to enjoy steak, lamb, pork, shrimp …. She went on listing all my favourite foods. Once when I was in the hospital, they gave me a soup with meat, I told them I didn't eat that, during dinner time, they tried to trick me into believing they cooked especially for me, they told me it didn't have meat, then, after inspecting the plate, it resulted it was the same soup and they only removed the meat. The years I had to say "no, this has milk", "no, this has meat", etc. whenever they tried to give me something new to eat. My mother started to cook very simple things for me and told me "don't know what to cook for you", so, to stop the frustration for everyone involved, I just started to cook for myself. Because of that, some years later, my mother told me one of her friends said her daughter didn't eat meat, too, then, when she explained how she cooked, she said her daughter only used to remove the meat from the plate after cooking her food with it. Don't know how some people can get it so wrong.
