Nice video! i could feel your pain. I have done struts on a number of vehicles that have fought me... It is very stressful.

when i saw you were numbering the failed attempts, it figured trouble lay ahead. it's uncommon for people to number things that happen once. :) BTW, in my opinion your fears were justified. pretty scary stuff.

This is why I would buy the complete strut kit with springs attached already. No stress

Typically the complete strut kits that are sold are not OEM, but Chinese parts in the worst case scenario, sometimes are good aftermarket in the best case scenario. I prefer OEM stuff unless it’s absurdly expensive.

Ahh, the widow maker springs of the w209. I actually had great success using cheap $50 spring compressors from amazon. I had to compress the springs so much, that the coils started touching. Meanwhile you can contemplate the meaning of life and death, and all the dumb things that you and your ancestors have attempted in the past, without dying a horrible death. But then everything comes together. I personally hide behind a bunch of wheels and rather reach around them to do the spring compression. Anyway, why not put in some good coils while you are at it? A set of Eibach or HR for this car run $150 on ebay. I just added EIbach/Bilstein B4 to my CLK500 and the difference is phenomenal. The car is both VERY sporty and feels comfortable like a Mercedes should feel. Actually I test drove the 2016 GLC300 and 2015 E350 on coils this week, and was surprised how bad their suspension was! Stiff, unforgiving harsh and "Tu-Tunk Tu-Tunk" over every pothole and sewer cover! With the upgraded suspension my car floats over potholes, yes you feel them, but no noises or body movement. But the suspension REALLY shines when you try to carve a corner, never had such a fantastic handling car before. If you go a little bit too fast in the corner and give it a little gas, the car tail jumps around the corner and picks you right up when straightening out. Now this is at speeds I don't usually go, but I already avoided two deer, one of them jumped right into the lane when I drove by. Highly recommend

I couldn’t get regular compressors to work. Spring has 4.5 coils. Compressor can grab 3. I compressed those all the way until they touched together, but remaining 1.5 coils still weren’t short enough to allow me to remove the mount. I put 2 more compressors and undo the nut, but the mount jumped half an inch or so there was no way I’ll be able to put this spring onto new shock. Therefore purchased the upgraded compressor :)

Very stressful my friend When you was working iwas hiding my face away not to be hit in case of...... Question how much could ask a shop to change the springs on the new shoks?

i changed my coil springs with a fork spring compressor. the upper fork pushed in all the way up and the lower fork all the way down. then i inserted the spindle between the two and was able to compress the coil spring completely. In Germany most drivers switch to K.A.W. Lowering Springs. Apparently they are not available in the USA. greetings from Germany

I'm not seeing why reguilar spring compressors would not have worked.

The problem that you are having so much is because the mounting point of your spring compressor(atleast one hook) should be highest point.. what i mean is, there is 4 wound on this coil, you are trying to compress the bottom 3 and leaving the top one , so what happens was when you compres the last 3 wound , the very first one is pushing against (meaning popping up) and not allowing you to remove the top plate. Ask me how i know .. because i did the same stupid mistake. next time rotate the strut so you can get the highest point of very first coil , your problem would be solved.

Do you have a link for the one you are referring to? I didn’t find any flexibility except on the handle I was showing somewhere in the end of the video. But it was my fault - I used a pipe to tighten it :) In overall I was expecting much worse results from this compressor.
