You got some of that right. The Casino was damaged - but not destroyed - by fire in 1982. There was just enough damage to keep it from being listed as a historical building by the National Historical Society. It did flood in 1994, but reopened for a few years. I had my wedding reception there in 1995. After the Casino flooded again in 1998, FEMA offered the county $300,000 to tear it down. We could have elevated it for $80,000 but the county didn't want to cross FEMA. Here's the kicker: FEMA's own rules state that a building deemed to be in a flood plain has to be demolished "to the vertical and horizontal limits of construction." They obviously didn't do that, as the skeleton of the building is still there, and the pilings extend 300 feet below that into the aquifer that supplies Albany's water. Apparently, FEMA has some wiggle room. It was certain people on the governing board of the city and county at the time who wanted the Casino demolished and orchestrated the transfer of the springs to the state so no one could swim there.

So you can't swim in it, what do you do then just walk around it and take pictures? Any other ways to get interactive with the water besides Scuba Diving that requires a permit which I'm sure a lot of people don't have.

I don't blame the county for not allowing swimming. This place would be a madhouse during the summer.

Rolando, were you around when the flood wiped out a lot of the area around the Flint and floated the graves out of the ground? I think it was in the 80's. Some of the corpses were never recovered and were swallowed by the aquifer How was the spring affected?
