Market Gardener, Jim Kovaleski has made some adjustments this season due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Normally, Jim would have returned to Maine by this time of the year, but with the Quarantine in effect, he is still here in Florida, improvising and experimenting with warm weather crops. The gardens are pumping out the final winter crops and he is planting summer crops, in case he's still in Florida by that time. Jim is still currently selling his amazing produce, but with safe, no contact protocols.

G'day from Northern Australia. I can give you a few tips about heat tolerant crops to grow. Kang Kong or Asian water spinach - it's very mild tasting, has hollow stems and will weep a small amount of white harmless, tasteless sap when cut. It LOVES the heat but needs a lot of water. You're better off with Bamboo leaf variety because the other wider leafed one is more of an aquatic plant. Fantastic as a salad green or a cooked stir fry green. Broccoli variety that copes well with warmer shoulder seasons is Green Magic. Johnny's seeds has a variety with a very similar name with the exact same attributes. Tuscan Kale grows when it's hotter but it goes bitter. Pick the leaves and put them in the freezer for 20 to 30 mins to replicate a frost and they will sweeten right up. I love all of Jim's videos and info. Blessings, ~D.

I've also noticed that my tomatoes that fall to the ground remain untouched, despite me having tons of slugs/snails in my gardens, from heavy mulching. I credit it to having a somewhat balanced ecosystem.
@ajb.822
@ajb.822 4 жыл бұрын
What state/part of the state, (or if so, another country ?) r u in ? I'm in west central WI & If I remember right, when I was a kid in the 80s, my mom's tomatoes could touch the ground for a bit without going bad. Other than a bit of potato bug issues, I don't thing we had much to battle, unlike as we got into the later 90s & beyond- It seemed the whole area eco-system was getting way worse, maybe due to ever larger corn fields & gmos & etc. , even tho at least, on our dairy farm we still did a lot of hay ground, & had pastures, and our part of county is super, duper hilly, so less big crop farms. That was without mulch at the time, too ( in the 80s) , which does seem to help, just keeping them cleaner & dryer, even if not anything else better about the soil yet ( new garden on clay ground w not much good stuff added yet) .. less rot .

I think they turned out not to be 4th of July because they were striped .(it was a mislabelled seed pkg) The consensus was they were either Black Vernisage or Purple Bumblebee. Since Jim buys from Johnnys Select Seed, I would guess the latter since they sell that. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/paujh7J3ldW6ZXk.html

So I should limb up those live oaks and keep on growing? Next year Jim should mow and catch those sweet potato tops and put them in that giant pile. I mow mine and mulch with them. I call it the "Toro" chop and drop. Spanish needles make some good soil that way. My two kids eat those sweet potato leaves straight out of the garden. I'm trying to raise them so they'll never go hungry. Thank you for keeping the videos coming.

Fantastic. I'm inspired--we have a small organic farm in Kentucky and a home in SoFlo, where I work in the winter. We used to grow food in Florida, but haven't had much success since moving to Kentucky. I was resigned to the idea that nomadic wouldn't work in both places, but now I'm up for giving it a try again.
