Your garden is beautiful! I enjoy seeing the variety of plants, trees, and flowers. The tulips and daffodils are delightful, and I always wanted to grow Brunnera-- I love the silver veining of the foliage. Your gardens should be featured in Better Homes and Gardens; it would be great if you were featured as a columnist with all kinds of tips, how-to, and garden ideas. TFS!

Thank you so much for your kind words Cami! I appreciate it. The brunnera is gorgeous. I'm hopeful that as the garden matures, and I have more shade, I can bring them back into the garden. I just love them so much, that I NEED to have them. Nothing like their color and large foliage. I would love to be featured in a publication some day, goals! Thanks again!! 💚

I agree Maria! I was thankful for the rain today as is been so dry, and I've recently planted some things. We're supposed to get some more rain throughout the week too here in southeastern Ma. The grass is looking like fenway at the moment lol. Very short lived until the heat kicks in, but my husband sure enjoys the green green lawn!

Wow a Japanese Maple Garden ❤❤❤! It is going to be Spectacular! Your garden is amazing. I think the weather reeked havoc on a lot of us. My tulips bloomed but randomly. My Amaryllis are short this year also (never had this happen) with weak stems so they are being cut and brought inside to bloom. My Peonies however, look Wonderful full of buds 🤞. I rescued 10 bulbs from a container tucked behind plants at the grocery store. I am not a huge tulip fan but got a little sad just seeing them past their prime. I walked up to the courtesy counter and offered them $2 for the container. Sold. Now I can give them a new home in another container along with my Hilde tulips which are planted in the wrong area of my yard.

I follow Nicole on Flower Hill Farm. She's in central New York. She's a cut flower grower and nursery owner. She said deer ate a number of her huechera. I also have some the deer chewed on. But I have some others that the deer ignored. Go figure! I'm in southeastern NC. Those critters are everywhere!!!!😝

Hi Jennifer, that makes sense. Nothing deer proof or resistant is actually "safe", they will try anything if hungry enough. Even babies, who just don't know yet will sample our plants. Its always a battle. We never know what will appeal to their palate.

Dangit!! Why do these animals insist on thinking our gardens are the salad bar?? So frustrating. No kidding he's plump, i'm sure he has a good selection at your garden. They are brazen. The shed right beside mine, in my neighbors yard, is where they like to hibernate, right underneath. I keep a close eye on it, last season, thankfully they stuck to the clove on the lawn. Deer however, are my nemesis.

@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the tip Jo, I'll have to give them a try before giving up on heuchera all together. I think part of the issue is this spot tends to be a bit dry. Its also more part sun/shade at the moment. I am so excited to add shade plants, that I'm not properly waiting for the shade. I need my trees in this area to grow a bit more before I have more shade cover. Probably another 3-5 years before that happens. Such is the reason Im' sure my brunerra didn't make it. So i'll try my best to patiently wait for shade to add more shade loving plants.

So beautiful! Seriously Steph, your yard is a treasure to admire. ❤ I love the colors, design, placement and hardscaping. The new stone patio walkway is going to be amazing. I have the same struggles as you with heuchera. I'm in Chicopee, MA and I don't have deer where I am, so it's definitely the bunnies! They ate my hellebore too last winter, so I also utilized those Dollar store baskets 🤣 Mid-summer I pulled all my heuchera out of the ground and put them in pots and they are now thriving. I don't know what it is about the ground that they don't like. The next challenge is to get them through winter in pots - but at least the bunnies won't be able to get them since they'll be on my deck. I watched this video looking to see how your tulips did last spring (as I'm now debating how I want to pot mine up). Even though they're short, so pretty!

Hi Jess, just watched your beautiful garden tour. I garden in zone 5b in Illinois. I live in the suburbs and wanted to warn you that the bunnies have eaten my blue fescue grasses and my heuchera every year for the last 2 years. For me they have also eaten my roses, barberry bushes and a few branches off of my new service berry shrub. Maybe Illinois bunnies are extra hungry but it seems they eat anything and have been caught in the act. Just wanted to give you a heads up to perhaps spray some rabbit repellant on your new plants. Love your channel and garden. Susan😊

Hi Ann, Thank you so much!! They do appear to be working. I have used spray repellants around the garden on some of my slower growing evergreens that take a while to recover from deer browsing. But, I mostly just plopped a deer spike/stick in front of tulip groupings and so far so good. I've been hopeful i could catch the action on camera, but so far no luck. Hi Tasha! I agree, I think the landscape staples would look much better. I always home the baskets/rocks will be temporary, but I have thme on the plants more often then not unfortunately lol. I'm sure your garden is already beautiful! Being outside among plants is such a gift, regardless of where our garden starts. I started in some rubbermaid totes growing some tomatoes. Thanks for watching.

Hi Margie! Thank you so much! The Japanese Maple variety is called "Katsura". There are also Katsura trees, but this one specifically is a JM called Katsura. Its a great med size JM, maturing to around 12-15 ft tall/wide. The Spring color is so gorgeous and fiery! Yes, lol George is great with the boys, loves to take them for a spin on the tractor and teach them. He's hoping one of them will take over the mowing for him 😂 Have a great week Margie!

I too have no luck with heucheras in my Bridgewater home about 15 miles from you.And My hundreds of tulips all seem not tall enough this year. I thought the deer would eat all of them,but I sprayed them several times and did get flowers. My giant alliums have large leaves and I do need to transplant the large clumps this summer. My local HD and Lowes have very little inventory compared to your location !! You are lucky..guess I just have to be patient. I travel to Briggs once a year for those special must have plants. Hi Sherry, Thank you so much! Glad to have you here 😊 The deer sticks are working well! I have sprayed evergreens that are slow growing for deer, but I have left the tulips mostly alone with just a deer stick plopped in front of the groupings, so far so good! I wish I could catch them in action, but I don't have enough cameras to spot them where they would graze. I did get some crummy footage one night on my doorbell cam, but not good enough to show on a vid unfortunately. I will leave the link here in case you want to check them out /research them more. I lost one of mine too and another of mine is much smaller than last year. You and I have such similar taste in plants! About the heuchera… some of mine do well and some don’t. Steph, everything looks so gorgeous! I got burnt out last summer and didn't plant any bulbs in the fall and now seeing this I am kicking myself. I had the same exact problem with my Heuchera, I think it was rabbits but the funny part is I have the same exact baskets with rocks as you and I just planted up 5 Elijah Blue Fescue grass yesterday...we are on the same wavelength. I planted 19 perennials in my back yard border including the fescue grass. The reason I'm mentioning it is I have it in the sun because I thought it was sun loving and I noticed you have yours with the heuchera which is shade loving. Was I supposed to plant the fescue grass in the shade?

Thanks Steph. The garden is very beautiful. On your comment about the daffodils, is that true for Tulips and Hyacinths as well? It’s my first year planting bulbs.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Жыл бұрын
Hi Penny! Thank you very much. The tulips are mostly treated as annuals as they do not reliably return. And even if some do, they are much smaller, and most times you just get leaves/foliage but no blooms. There are some varieties such as the darwin type tulips that are more reliable as a perennial with chances of returning, or living in your garden for some years. Hyacinths, Im' not too certain, but the "grape hyacinths" I would probably treat the same as the daffs and let the foliage die back naturally before trimming/cleaning up. Hope this helps.

Hi Steph. Love your tour ❤️. I have a few questions. My daffodils always flop. Do they need full sun? Also how long does it take to KILL the grass using your cardboard method? The grass seems to love my flower bed. I’m going to put a cobble stone edger like yours. Thanks
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Жыл бұрын
Hi Mary Jane, Sometimes Daffodils with larger bloom heads will flop due to the weight of the bloom. Also, rain will cause some flopping. In general I do believe they bloom better with some sun. I do have some in a more shady area, and those don't get as many blooms. The cobble looks pretty ☺

Oh Michelle, I'm so sad for you in losing your tree! I hope you are able to replace it this Spring. Was it under a warranty? It was a very difficult year from last Spring through now. Between the heat and droughts last summer, to the very wet fall and winter, and extreme fluctuating cold temps, it was just difficult for new plantings. Man those squirrels! We have lots also. They mess with bulbs in my garden, but thankfully not much else. I have deer, some bunnies, and a resident groundhog on occasion to contend with.
