This video follows us across 4 days as we set a few limb lines and our first trotline of the season, leading up to our first catch! As of the posting of this video, Saturday, March 18th, the lakes have already begun withholding water so they can rise to summer pool. This caused the river to drop about 20 inches overnight, which helped our line settle a little deeper, and makes it easier to pull. It's very early in the season, normally we'd wait another month or so, but we missed it. You'll see the difference in water flow in the next video.

I believe the correct way is to hold the catfish high above your head facing north and if the catfish sees its shadow then you'll have 6 more weeks of good eatin'

now that looks like fun to me;;;although with all the artillery on to kill the cold think I would have live preserver on cause I wouldn't be able to swim to bank;;;;;lol;;;lasso one of them deer and have a catch clean and cook;;;llol;;;;Don't care what they say girl you can set a trotline as good as the best;;;lol;;;ya show a bunch up too;;;lol;;;good one;;;keep Josh drivin;;;big thumbs up and keep em comin;;;;

Congratulations on first fish of the year. It'll be a while before we can fish here in Central California, lots of water high on the banks, rain expected again in the coming week. Probably be a month or so before our water lowers and clears up. In the meantime, I'll watch your show and fish with ya'll...... thanks

So freakin cool! I went fishing today in our backyard pond using chicken liver. I caught nothing but only stayed a few hrs. Maybe this Friday, when the weather a little warmer, 😉 I'll catch a catfish. I need more patience.

If you've got your own pond, tie the end of a line around a rock or a limb and leave your bait overnight!

Buddy we landed 2 good ones today! Video out tomorrow! There was a 3rd but he jumped off. Theyre biting for us on frozen skipjack. Size 6 circle hook. Maybe size 4 in a pond.

Rivers in the spring can be dangerous. Cold water and fast currents. Add heavy clothing and boots, a receipt for trouble. I know you both are experienced, but stay safe.

I'm sure you've answered this question before but do you have to have a special license for trot lining ?

Not here in Kentucky, but you may have to in other states. As long as the line is 4 feet below the surface, so as not to catch a boat motor, you're good! However, we sink ours to around 14 feet deep. We're allowed up to 18 hooks per line and have to check the lines every 24 hours or less.

Is there a reason why trotlines are deemed illegal in many locations?

To be honest, I don't know. It could be the type of fish, the depth of river, the amount of boat traffic. That's an excellent question though. I do know that some states have protected fishes, and they impose a limit on how many hooks an angler can have in the water at once, to moderate populations.
