Hickok45: I was at a gun shop here is San Jose, California (Gun Exchange) and I over heard the gun clerks talking to a female customer (older men and woman) about different weapon types and ammunition. One clerk (in his 60's) asked her: "Have you ever heard of a man by the name of 'Hickok45' on KZfaq? This man can tell you more in one segmented video than we can both do in one entire week". I chimed in and confirmed that I too watch your videos, am a subscriber, and agree with your knowledge and assessments. She pulls out her smartphone and starts watching a video in the shop about the weapon she wanted to purchase. Politely she says "well... thanks guys. I guess I don't need ya'll anymore" and walked out the door. I just wanted to share how popular you are even here and how much others appreciate your time for these videos.

Glad I found this video. I have watched a ton of your videos, but this one really hit home. I became the owner of one of these after my dad passed away, it was his deer hunting rifle so that brings back a lot of fun memories. I haven't shot it yet, I imagine the last person to pull the trigger was my dad many years ago. I may have to clean it up and put some rounds through it.

I know this is late but, I have an older 1903 with a manufacture date of 1906. My grandfather and my dad sporterized it back in the early 60's. Kept all the original barrel, action and trigger groups. Still able to put 8 rounds in a 2 in group at 200 yards. Beautiful weapon. Cool history with it.

I own a 1921 vintage 1903 that I inherited from my dad. He was born in 1921 so it's kind of special. Your's is an earlier 03A3 as it has a straight grip stock the later versions having a pistol grip stock. The trigger guards on the 03A3 were of stamped steel to economize as was the 2 lands & groove rifling. These features had no negative impact on the rifle's performance. My dad's '03 was the first centerfire rifle I ever shot. It is very sentimental to me. I still have a full ammo can of Korean War surplus AP rounds my dad purchased over 50 years ago, still shoots great. I do agree the rear sight relocation on the 03A3 an improvement over the '03 though the earlier sight not bad either. At a range session I was able to impress my son and his friends by hitting the 200 yard 8" steel gong 20 times in a row using the old surplus ammo. My other ex military rifles are a Type 99 7.7 Arisaka a war bring-back of dad's, and a 1916 Spanish Mauser in 7.62x51 Nato (rebarreled), all great shooters but something extra special about a 1903 Springfield.

I have one with the ladder sites, also drilled out for the Pedersen device. Great rifle, accurate and reliable.
@GeorgiaBoy1961
@GeorgiaBoy1961 3 жыл бұрын
@ 61loneviking: The M1905 "ladder"sights were a technological marvel in their time. At that time, rifle scopes were both rare and fragile, consequently few rifles mounted them. Instead, a great deal of time and effort went into learning how to use iron sights well. Designers and manufacturers devoted much time to them as well, as evidenced in the Springfield's original sights. They have several means of sighting. First a battle-sight zero notch, used when the ladder rear sight is folded down. BSZ was roughly 545 yards or so or about 11-12" high at 100 yards depending on load and conditions. There are apertures on the ladder as well, whose gradiations allow use between 100-2000 yards, if memory serves. Why so far? In those days, before mortars, fast-firing artillery, aviation and machine-guns became the area-denial, long range weapons of choice, the rifleman was used instead. Under direction of an officer or NCO, a small unit of men could bring volley fire to bear on a distant target, if necessary. Corrections were made via telescope, binoculars, or other visual means. The M1905 sights worked well in combat; U.S. Marines used them in WWI at places like Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood to take out German soldiers at distances up to 800 yards away. Some individuals find the M1905 sights not to their taste, preferring instead the 03A3-pattern sights.
@61loneviking
@61loneviking 3 жыл бұрын
GeorgiaBoy1961 yes, those ladder sights are interesting. There’s, I think, 5 differed sights that can be used for different ranges and purposes on the rifle.

I just bought one. 1943 A3 model. Mine has matching numbers. And an original stock with all the stamps. In great shape. They also had an earlier model with the milled trigger guard and magazine plate. And the older "ladder" rear sight. But had a new, but not original, beautiful stock. I buy my rifles, even collectable ones, to be shooters. I decided in this case, even though the older rifle looked better, the one that was all matching original was the way to go! I am not disappointed! A very nice piece of history to add to my collection!

It looks as if there is a crack in the wrist of the stock to the rear of the receiver tang. 1903's and A3's commonly crack in this area if the rear of the receiver touches wood behind the tang screw and or the steel bushing for the tang screw is missing.

Every-time you bring out the classic rifles I have to go over and grab mine off the rack and fondle it!

Great video. One of the most beautiful rifle, if not the most beautiful rifle, sometimes the Lee Enfield No4 mk2, and even the k98k. Thanks from South Brazil.
