We take a look at a couple of gorgeous .308 rifles. The 7.62X51 is a wonderful round, and there are some really special rifles chambered for it.

Of course! My wife comes home and catches me running around the house, jumping from kitchen sink to the dining room table with the fully loaded SCAR17. I've accidentally broken most of her fine China doing this. What she hates the most is when I shoot my AK47 in the shower, just testing how it functions under adverse conditions. :-)

I was in a grocery store one time getting ready for a barbecue when I heard a rumble from the next isle.. I went to find the noise and found myself in the coke isle and the two liters were shaking uncontrollably.. Moments later Hickok45 walks past the isle and then I understood.. It seems the two liters were shaking out of fear.

In the Army in the 1960's they trained us to take the safety off of the M14 by using your thumb. Never stick your finger inside of the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. After a while it becomes automatic to do it that way

Man, after watching a lot of Hickok videos you can really hear how much faster and harder that .308 hits the targets compared to other calibers.

Stig's Italian Cousin I could be wrong but I believe 556 and 308 travel around the same speed, just 308 is a much bigger bullet size so more total energy.
@celesteburtnett1759
@celesteburtnett1759 7 жыл бұрын
cornelius blanchard depending on grain size but typically with your average grain size 556 is 150 to 500 fps faster, but both calibers have the capibility to go way faster then your average grain size.
@pliskenx51mm83

Typically from what I've read and seen. 5.56 is the faster of the two.

556 on average is around 300 fps faster than 308 at the muzzle, but 556 loses speed a lot faster than 308 does
@pliskenx51mm83
@pliskenx51mm83 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah. .308 on average depending on powder and bullet weight is going about 2700-2800 FPS. .223 can go up to 3100 and faster. The trade off being .308 is able to hit farther due to the weight of the bullet being twice that of a .22 caliber bullet. .308 has a better ballistic coefficient overall then .223. But both are great calibers.

Thanks! One thing to do before going out in the field, or battle, is to check and tighten up all screws and other parts that may have come loose from use. One time, while in the Army '64-'68, I found my M-14 front sight had become loose and was wandering every shot. I knew exactly where it had been and had to BE but there were no armorers around and nobody had an Allen wrench, of course. A mess kit fork did the job. Moral, carry a full set of Armorer's tools or keep your fork!Just a little humor, there Hickock.... Bill

Shirley Bertrand So when America intervenes in a conflict, wouldn't that be cleaning up someone else's mess? But you donate 30 dollars so that will make up for everything and set the world straight :) I'm glad you have the opportunity to make yourself feel like you're better than other people who sacrificed part or all of their lives to try to make the world a better place. Some of us weren't content with sitting around complaining.
@shirleybertrand7890
@shirleybertrand7890 6 жыл бұрын
Kyle Bradley Bullshit, the countries that Americas "intervening" in don't even want Americas help! They know that both the American gov and the American soldier are not there to help or for 'MUH FREEDOM' like Americans say everytime they commit warcrimes are try to bully the world its for "freedom" NOBODY believes you. Even the common American soldier only joined srmy because your country is OBSESSED with guns, death, and violence. That's why America has a homicide rate 10× higher than almost all other western nations. What a joke when u say that taking away guns from people that they couldn't possibly need just for home defence wouldn't change murder rates. England got rid of guns and they're much much lower homicide rate than America! You all watch way too much Hollywood bs thats propaganda for the pentagon to get you dummies to join the army, sad most Americans don't even know that FACT that Hollywood gets huge breaks if they make a film with army equipment thats flattering to the army

Picked up a SOCOM 16 a couple weeks ago. Had a choice between this and a standard M1A and I just loved the shorter overall length of the SOCOM. People online who bash this gun's accuracy are clearly not very good shots themselves. Obviously it's not going to be sub-MOA, but that's not the point of this rifle. It was designed as a combat rifle, not a rifle to be fired from a bench to try to make tiny groups on a piece of paper.

@Chris Indermuehle That couldn't be further from the truth bud. The USMC and Army DM's use the KAC SR-25/M110; the Army is now switching from the M110 to the Heckler and Koch M110A1 CSASS (which I'll hopefully be issued later this year, hopefully); basically an H&K G28 without the G28 rail. You also have the EBR which isn't as widely used as it was in the early 2000s but still used. So that's three rifles right there, chambered in .308, that are used by conventional troops.

I remember passing the time freshmen year disassembling and reassembling my rifle down to the bolt, I think my best time was just around 45 seconds total. Always loved that rifle just for its shear weight and power of the 7.62 although I've never shot an M14, more well versed firing my M4. Love your videos Hickok!

Although the M1 was really the father of the M1A, the original M1As were essentially M1 Garands with magazines and fire selectors added. They mother of the M14 might be the M1/M2 Carbine, as it was basically the same core concept, take an M1 receiver and give it the ability to load magazines, later adding the capacity for Automatic fire, except while the M1 Carbine was a different rifle in every way except the bolt, the M14 was literally a direct modernization of the M1 Garand.

Loose parts, pins, keepers, etc can disable a rifle fast when cleaning them in the field if you drop one in the grass or something. And you can only carry so many spares.

Having spent 16 years in the British Military, is it just me , or does the SCAR look remarkeably similar to the SLR(FN FAL) Loved that rifle, hard hitting 7.62 round, much better than the 5.56 that they've adopted now. In my opinion. :-)

Looks like 2 great weapons but I would take the M1A because of its proven record. I don't know how tight the tollerences are on the SCAR but most of the newer weapons seem to error on the aside of ttyo close of tollerences which doesn't end end wel for troops in dirty/ sandy environments. You could drop an M1 Garand in the mud and most likely it would still fire. I know that is not true for the M16. Thanks for the posting Hickok 45 You rock

josephl. Carson having shot both, and an owner of an M1A, the M1A definitely has tighter tolerances when comparing the two. the scar 17 almost feels like a toy when handling and manipulating it, and I will never be able to figure out how something so loosely put together is so accurate.

There's a reason elite units choose the scar and the common soldier the M14
@scottl886
@scottl886 6 жыл бұрын
Shirley Bertrand Yeah and one of the biggest reasons is that those elite soldiers will already have thousands upon thousands of hours training with the AR platform which the Scar mirrors. There is no unit that widely uses the M14 where the SCAR is readily available.

@thomascampbell2075

Shirley bertrand usually socom units get huge deals from weapons manufacturers because every manufacturer wants to say or best use their rifle. Special operations forces have no spending limit so they can get things that are to expensive to outfit every soldier with. This should mean that they can buy the best but often times what is advertised as the best is quickly disputed in the hands of a special forces operator and the harsh conditions they work in. The scar 17 is a good rifle, but a lot of spec ops dudes don't like the reciprocating charging handle. The action can become obstructed and fail to cycle. It can injure the user and it makes shooting against a wall or laying down sideways more difficult. Yes the m1a has the same issue. An ar10 doesn't have this issue but gets fouled up more quickly then an m4 (which is already bad enough as it is) do to it's di gas system. I have the sig mcx for these reasons, gas piston, folding stock, free float barrel, attachable rail mount system that takes the weight of the quad rail off, a non reciprocating charging handle with ambidextrous controls and sub moa accuracy and easily serviceable. If they did this to a 308 it would be a win

It makes sense the SCAR has less recoil, if you look at the way the bore lines up with the stock it's a straight line directly into your shoulder, on the M14 with a more traditional stock, the line of the bore is above the stock, that results in more kick and muzzle rise. Like that silly Rhino revolver they made where it fires from the bottom of the cylinder.
@MikeMalkowski
@MikeMalkowski 10 жыл бұрын
Compensators help with muzzle rise, which could help on terms of perceived recoil. Muzzle brakes are designed to use the gasses of the gun to help reduce recoil. If it's just a case of the muzzle rise causing the recoil to be unpleasant then porting or compensation should work in theory.
@MikeMalkowski
@MikeMalkowski 10 жыл бұрын
You're exactly right Connor, that's why competition handgun shooters run them. But if the recoil isn't causing muzzle rise it really wouldn't help. That's where knowing why the recoil is worse makes a difference in how you can combat it.

Great video as usual. I'd love a SCAR 17 in FDE, but in the end, after optics and mags, I'd have a really expensive rifle that just doesn't fill a hole. I also like the classic M14 looks of the Springfield so the choice is easy. Now how about a comparison between a "new" CMP Garand in .308 and the M1A!

I love the M14/M1A, and have been into it since the mid-60's. I would GLADLY carry one. Even the "non-Match Grade" versions are scary-accurate, even through good ol' iron sights. That said, anyone who has run FN's with the geometry of the rig helping to keep-down the recoil and muzzle-rise, would tell you that a lighter-framed guy could run the FN all day long, with less wear-and-tear, than the M1. I'm 5'-10", and 200 pounds, solid, but I still find the FN to be much gentler to run, especially mag-after-mag, even from what is a relatively lighter rifle. I'd happily run EITHER weapon, but, for someone who is not wanting to be hammered, as much, by recoil, and who wants to avoid as much muzzle-rise, the FN is easier to use, in that respect. To be blunt, despite the fact that the M14 had been issued as a selective-fire weapon, and even had a special stocked version, with a vertical pistol grip, for use as an early SAW (Sqaud Automative Weapon), the military had to come to grips with the reality that, at full-auto, the M14 was not as controllable as one would want it to be. I don't mean insofar as hosing-through a door, right before a dynamic entry, but more insofar as being able to use it in the way something more like an M60 or an M540B, or, more appropriately, an M249, just for suppressing the "bad guys." But, since your reviewer, here, is talking about semi-auto ONLY, then it's fair to say that BOTH the M1A and the FN SCAR are outstanding systems. I've never had any issues with the M1A's safety. One could allow as how this front-of-the-trigger-guard system was one of the original, old-school, "AMBIDEXTROUS" safeties! Now, you DO have to rock-in the mags, like on an AK, or a Mini-14, or an old FN-FAL (L1 A1), on an M1A, if THAT bothers you, but, frankly, that's not too hard to get used-to, at all, but obviously, for an AR-user, the straight-in mag insertion and the similar thumb safety, and the magazine-release would be SUPER-similar to that to which you'd already be accustomed, as an AR-user. BOTH are excellent rifles. I like the Scout version better than the SOCOM version, though it's a tiny bit longer. By the way, Magpul makes elongated ambi safety replacement modules for the SCAR, if the issue versions seem too stubby for folks with larger hands,etc.

M1A is just the simpler of the two weapons, and no polymer is a big plus. That said, SCAR's are great battle rifles, but if I had to be left alone with 1000 rounds and one rifle, I'd choose the M1A/M14.
