I am thankful for this video, and the comments people had. My husband is having lung problems, but said he will be refusing the PFT because he is claustrophobic. After seeing this, he says he could do it. So glad.
@jkadbhjadhboaАй бұрын
Claustrophobia isn’t usually a problem because of the glass but I do see it get in the way of testing occasionally (once every couple years, maybe). Different labs may offer alternative testing that wouldn’t require him to be sealed in the box. That being said, I’m glad he felt more confident going ahead with the testing after you two did some self-education 🙂.

This is a good video in that it shows the three typical PFTs that are done, however, it is so completely UNREAL that it is offensive to many patients with lung disease. It is offensive to me and I don't have a lung disease. My mom had IPF and has since passed away. I watched her do these tests countless times. I myself do them once or twice a year now (for 5 years) as the doctor is keeping an eye on my lung health. The woman "demonstrating" here is clearly not doing them properly. This video needs to be refilmed - with someone REALLY doing these tests. A patient really has to blow hard and WORK to do these tests. They take DEEP breaths and when they do those quick blows out, they are a "POW!!" type of blow. Then it is PUSH PUSH PUSH - using those tummy muscles and turning red in the face - to get every little bit of air out of the lungs at the end. Please consider refilming this and posting the REAL PFTs so that people truly understand what they are like. I know countless patients who will thank you.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience, and in reminding others about the importance of maintaining their lung health. You are correct in that each patient is unique and his / her individual health or condition may lead to an experience different that the one portrayed in the video (which was an actual patient performing an actual test). We will certainly share your feedback with our Pulmonary Department for review and consideration, and further clarification if needed.

I have sarcoidosis and have had years of this Pulmonary Function Test. It's just something that gets you a little winded/tired but it is not a big deal. Hey, you're not lying there full of tubes and needles so it could be much worse. The booth is hilarious. Like a game show! I never was in a booth and I'd bet most taking this test were not either. However, this is much like my experience only mine is over more quickly and there is no booth.

Springfield Clinic I had this done this morning and they suspect I have an upper airway issue in the area around my voice box...they said I'll probably require further testing...any idea what they may want to do? The tech said it sounded like I was having difficulty getting air IN rather than straight asthma...like a blockage maybe? Or restricted upper airway. I cant remember what he said exactly. Im just waiting for my primary dr to review it and get back to me with where I go from here.

Springfield Clinic Turns out my problem wasn't with my upper airway but my trachea. I had something called Subglotta Stenosis. After having outpatient surgery (it extended from the top of the trachea to 30 cm below that), its been corrected and I can excercise without getting winded! :)

This test is the most awful test ever. It always leaves me feeling light headed and dizzy. I have asthma and the technicians running the test often act like I'm trying to be difficult when I become red faced, light headed, start coughing violently and can't blow anymore in fear of passing out. It's so frustrating and never a good experience.
@jkadbhjadhboaАй бұрын
This test shouldn’t be traumatic. It does require maximum effort but the technologist should be able to adjust, to some extent, for the issues you’re describing. For example, maybe having you back off on the force of the exhalation after the first couple seconds if you are repeatedly becoming lightheaded after every maneuver (lightheadedness is usually a one-time thing that passes quickly). Consider using a different PF lab. PF labs and personnel run the gamut, from being very “bad” in many respects (common) to being very “good” (uncommon). Good luck!

Do you think there is a technique to do the test and get better results. I think I blow too hard at first which makes me out of air to keep blowing longer. My ratio FEV1/FVC was 79%. So I am 1 percent off. Thanks for any advice.

I have spirometry tests every time I go to the clinic but I have been to one in another clinic. the person kept asking me if IsmokedIhave never smoked in my life. Did the test three times I was out breath and dizzy I was not on.a machine like that it was spectrometry pipe which blew down it was bad enough doing that, this one on the vid looks like torture chamber. Is there oxygen in there or just the patient, there is no way I would go in there my sinuses are blocked so putting the nose clip a no no I have had Asthma since I was 16. and a half. I had also contracted aspergellisois. so could have been the cause of problem This was sorted in Hospital but still had the asthma. Have had stasis asthmaticus twice over. I went to get the results from. Practice nurse, asked when I had stopped smoking, I replied I did not smoke and never had, I told her to take the information off my record She said that because my lungs were so bad that she probably was smoking, I just repeated the denial , I also asked the doctor was the information was off. He sort of grinned and said yes The nurse had apparently spoken to about my upset attitude. They obviously think you are lying.

Dwayne Lowe I also thought she was abrupt and rude. And she didn't smile...miserable face..
@kaiserjosef66696 жыл бұрын
The nurse (RT) did an exemplary job in my opinion. I did not find any rudeness in the video. The RTs job is to be a coach and guide their patient through different maneuvers that many patients rarely are used to doing. It is their job to ensure the patient gives you their best effort during the test. Many great PFT labs will use body language, and expressive tones with their instructions to get the best effort from the patients. Sometimes the PFT labs are the loudest area of the hospitals. When you say she was "forceful" you are correct, since one of the tests performed is a Forced Vital Capacity (FVC). It is supposed to be forced. Check this video out below to learn more about it and you might see why the nurse might "seem rude" but is simply being a great coach. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sL9kg5eFv7fFcp8.html

I'm having this test done in a few days. I'm not sure if I'll do very well. I'm currently struggling with the Flu. My pulmonologist request this test every year. It's really not a pleasant test, not that it's supposed to be. I have pulmonary hypertension and sleep so this test is routine. My breathing is always off key.

If I were to take a nebulizer breathing treatment immediately prior to walking in and taking this test, would I be able to pass? I have very mild asthma but asthma none the less. Joining military regardless, but I'd prefer to walk into MEPs with waiver because I cheated than just lie about it and roll the dice. (And please, no standard responses of "You shouldn't cheat/lie because mind is already made up).

Man, I had one of these done today and now i feel like i over exerted my lungs. There's no pain, really. Just difficulty breathing and feeling a little over exerted on the lungs and diaphragm..... is this normal? I'm a light smoker, but I didn't pass out and still did pretty well.... anyone?
@lkrause7410 жыл бұрын
I think its normal. I had this test done this morning and I felt that way too...and Im not a smoker. Being a smoker might have more impact on your results but I felt like I over exerted my lungs too. If it continues, Id tell your doctor though. They suspect that I personally have more of an upper airway issue than asthma. Further testing to come for me Im sure.

I have to do this to be a beach lifeguard (returning after few years). When i was 16, i failed this test because i cannot hold out the expiration at the very end (forcing out that tiny bit of air for several seconds). My dad always had the same problem and failed his too. Now i have to retake this test again at age 19 and i am a bit worried. a week ago i ran a mile in 5 minutes and 30 seconds, and then swam 500 meters in 9 minutes and 30 seconds. I am an athlete, i played soccer for 7 years, tae kwon do for 10, and played trumpet for 7 years, among other sports. 6 months ago, i started to smoke occasionally, but this shouldn't effect my lung capacity much. Im pretty sure i am going to fail again, which leads to my question. As an athlete and healthy person, why do i fail this test? i believe it is a genetic thing, but i dont know if that is possible.
@springfieldclinic10 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, Springfield Clinic's Dr. Samir Patel shares the following: Exercise capacity and lung capacity are different measures. Lung capacity measured in the cubicle does require the patient and tester getting the correct technique for an accurate result. The data obtained from pulmonary function testing in a cubicle must be interpreted for accuracy. Even when the data obtained is accurate this is only one part of testing or evaluation of a patient’s ability to exercise well.

I think you should show them a few people for when you got the door closed and cut off their oxygen in that sealed chamber! I freaked the F out, one more second and I would have lost it. It says you can open the door at anytime you need to but I don't recall having that option back in 2013 when I did my one and only one. Sugar coating these tests but hey you'll live through it but damn it sucks! or blows!!! One can assume these medical doctors are being condisending by saying they know you can do it and when i say I can't thats what I mean!!! Have a nice day.

Good, informative video but the technician's demeaner does not appear to be very kind, compassionate and understanding. Her body language appears that she is annoyed. A smile goes a long way especially in the medical field. If I was the Patient I would be extremely nervous. Maybe she was just having a difficult shift.

I'd love to have my heart and lung functions tested in a first world country. I was born with a defective heart valve, so I guess lots of pathological stuff would be discovered. Living in a third world country means being checked and tested by mediocre "medical practitioners."
