We're covering a lot today. The most beautiful cookies in the world are made using Springerle molds. Valentines were perfected by the Pennsylvania Germans using the art of Scherenschnitte (papercutting). Did Shakespeare and his wife drink coffee or TEA? (Please excuse my horrid attempt at an English accent in reading Shakespeare)

I think this is one of my favorite videos. I love the background music, the sounds of all the cooking utensils & ingredients. I prefer watching this instead of any home/cooking channel on TV. The prep leads to the excitement. I wonder, what neat antique, beautiful art, gadget, preserved recipe, background story, instruction, tips, will she give us? These episodes are precious!!! Thank you! P.S. Never heard of “hartshorn”, pretty neat, even the grater for the spices, ya gotta love it!!🥰🌸

I like to add cardamom, because I can drink so much more coffee since the cardamom takes all the jittery business out of coffee. That’s how Indians can drink all that delicious, strong, authentic spiced chai. Cardamom is also a good remedy when you’ve had too much coffee. Just steep a quarter teaspoon or less in a cup of hot water and drink it down. 😘

Cardamom is my favorite. Great idea to add to coffee. For a cold drink in the Fall I do seltzer water, a drop of ginger oil, drop of cardamom oil, and a little apple cider.

Thank you so much for this beautiful time with you. I have a friend that learned scherenschnitte . She did them for Christmas and gave me 2 of them. They hang from my light over the table. I also was given one that was a valentine framed. You made them come a live. The little coffee cups remind me of my collection of tiny cups and saucers. I was allowed to drink coffee but had cream more than coffee when I was a child. I have 3 of them and they mean so much to me. I have 2 sets of silver . They are from my Grand fathers cousins , they were all from Denmark. The small silverware was used for a Danish coffee. One set had a fork and a spoon. The others were one side a fork contacted a thicker side for scooping up or cut what ever you needed it for. They have an England stamp on the back. I can barely see it with a magnifying glass. The cookies were a delight. But wow you have to have patience. I loved every minute of this video. I thought about my Grandparents and friends. I have used the silver different times. I keep them in little plastic bags and they don't tarnish in them. Oh I almost forgot. I saw you drop sugar cubs into a bowl. That was a must at Grandma's. Well Happy Valentine's Day Jeri and thank you again for taking the time to show us your beautiful cutting out those tiny hearts and flowers. you have the patience. Joyce

Ooh, I'm so curious about the 24 hour batch! This video was an absolute treat! I've been obsessed with springerle, and sometime around November I sketched out several patterns that I thought I might try to carve on my own. I have experience with linocut, and my own hubris assured me that wood wouldn't be *too* difficult a medium to switch to.😅 Let me just say, it took me 6+ hours to complete only 3/4 of the woven outer border. My roses look a trifle smooshed, but in all honesty, I think it's a good beginning for a first attempt! I ultimately set the project aside for a bit, but only because a new mania consumed me. Speaking of new manias, your stunning Valentines have inspired me...🤔😅thanks again for an amazing video!

Hi Jerry! I loved to see you bake our traditional Christmas cookies. My grandma used to make them all the time. They are a traditional german Christmas cookie, which a lot of people do not bake anymore. So wonderful to see you make this historical cookie which descends from the Middle Ages. You explain it all very well. I also adore your Scherenschnitte! You know, we are a bit ahead in time from the USA and I am watching this video on Monday, a day after Valentine`s Day. But it came just in perfect timing. It is like a Liebesbrief arrived from a beloved and kindred spirit, in devine timing. My husband died in 2014 and he was from Switzerland. @@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow I found this german instruction for Springerle. It says to dry it for 24h beforehand, then bake it on 150° Celsius for 15 to 20 minutes and to put the baking sheet on a wet towel before baking as well. "

Lol) Then she baked them and the smell was heavenly! When they came out of the oven they were little pillow cookies with a pocket of air...! It made them Devine 💖. I loved them! Your video came at the perfect time for me, enjoyed with my cup of coffee 🤗 I have an eighteenth century beautiful museum in the parkland behind my house. Hanley is a town in Stoke on Trent (about 40 mins drive from where I live), which is also known as The Potteries due to the area being a large manufacturer of china ware and pottery back in the day. Oh this is such a beautiful video Jeri!!! One of my favorites for sure. I have so many favorites !!! You are a treasure indeed ❤️ One more thing, have you seen the movie All Is True? It’s a beautiful movie about Shakespeare and Ann. I absolutely love it. Judy Dench plays Ann. I own it and have watched it so many times. The more I watch it, the more I love it. I see and hear something new each time. I also have the soundtrack...love it too. PS...the movie mentions the “second best bed” 😊 Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

@@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow I think you’ll really like it. And like I said, the more I watch, the more I like. I also like the fact it looks real, as far as the darkness of the rooms with the candlelight, etc. ❤️

I am so glad you made these, and you have given me an idea. I have the old wooden roller that has the pictures on them. I will mode them and use a cookie cutter to cut them out in different shapes This is my absolute favorite thing in the world to eat. My aunt made them for me on special occasions. I would watch her make them it took 2 days. Then you let them sit to dry even more, I thought I'd never get a cookie LOL. I have not made them myself, when she turned 90 she gave me the roller with the pictures and the recipe. I so want to make them now that I've seen you refresh my mind. So thank you very much for doing this video. It made my day.

Hello, it is quite seldom to see somebody from the US baking Springerle. I am from southern Germany and we still make Springerle. We make them for Christmas. Our recipe calls for: 4 Eggs, 500g powdered sugar, 500g flour, 1 knife point of Hirschhornsalz and Anis. The Springerle should dry over night. The next day you brush the Springerle at the bottom with water, than sprinkle Anis seeds on the waxed baking sheet, put the Springerle on top and bake on low heat. Love your Springerle, they look good and for me it feels like Christmas...

I like to think (though I know he wasn’t a faithful husband and I’m probably wrong) that “second-best bed” was some kind of private joke between them, so when she read that Anne smiled and said “That’s my Will.”

OMG, I was just about to say how delicious the dough looked -- I would be eating half of it before even shaping the cookies -- and then you mentioned the ammonia in it! 😳 Well nevermind then! I always enjoy your videos; the cookies came out so beautifully!💕🍪🥀🌼

Thank you Jeri! Happy Valentine’s Day ❤️ I have made springerle before and have a few molds, so fun! My recipes called for beating the egg yolks for 10 minutes, lots of drying and very low temp oven, but they turned out great.

🦋This is a lovely video and truly brings back the memory of my Grandmother (our family tree goes back to the Alsace-Lorraine region you mentioned) making these cookies. I also recall not being a fan of them! I was very young and thought the cookies were hard as a rock! What I wouldn’t give now to be in her kitchen, enjoying a cookie dunked in a cup of her boiled coffee. Thank you, Jeri 💕
