What is PTFE and pipe dope? How do you use them? When solenoids buzz, check the white "common wire" group and make sure wires are not freyed and each wire is properly touching each other, twist on the wire nut snuggly, but dont overtighten.
I suggest 4 or 5 wraps with PTFE to be sure. And if you want total confidence of no leak, you can add a pipe dope bead on top of the PTFE, all the way around the threads. Good Luck!

Since you're so detailed...you probably know what I did wrong. While replacing valve i tried to get water out of inlet pipe but wasn't too successful. I thought the red hot glue could be used in wet conditions so gave it a try. It didn't take on the wet pipe. So either it was because of the water or because the pipes weren't quite even length and didn't attach right. I stuck a paper towel down inlet pipe and pulled it out right before using glue but I think water returned to quick. Thanks for helping.
@westvalley411

Water is creeping into the inlet pipe because either the main valve has a slight leak and water is getting past it (so tighten it) or the water is seeking its own level and you have to take out more water to equalize the balance of water. But, I had the same problem....so I took an old Lincoln Log and pushed it up and down to displace as much water as I could. It worked because the log is just a little smaller than the lumen of the pipe (sort of like a piston in a cylinder) and forced out about 8 inches of water. (you can use any other type of device or tool). Since the valves were in the sun, only had to buy about 5 minutes of time for the glue to set up and you are good to go. Hope this helps and sorry for the late response, too busy with COVID work at the hospital.

Use your Shop-Vac. But... First, empty the dirt out and then remove the paper filter from your shop-vac. Now suck the water out. It's also the only way to get all the water out of the hole you probably dug.

I tried using three runs of Teflon tape and tightened with tool after hand-tightening and still have a drip.....anything else to try?
@westvalley411
@westvalley411 4 жыл бұрын
That's a bummer, if it drips the only chance you have to stop it, is if enough calcium scale builds up to clog hole, but not likely. Exterior glue application may work for a while, but probably won't stop it long term. Unfortunately, the plastic molds aren't perfect and don't form fit all the way around. You may have to re do and use more tape and add pipe sealant to be sure. Hope this helps.

I just replaced the same Valve i replaced three of them but i made the mistake of not adding enough Teflon tape or i also over tightened a little theres no cracks on the pvc but it drips a little around the threads will adding water weld by jb weld help fix the problem Or what do you recommend?
@westvalley411
@westvalley411 2 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one, anything is worth a try. Plastic valves are not precisely manufactured and could leak, but short of redoing the work, you may not have success. If yoy press it in tight and over time the minerals in the water build up and form a clot, you may hey lucky. Also in hot summer pipes expand and may close leak. I know plumbers say they never have leaks, and I guess practice makes perfect. Good luck!

My valves are encased in a box above ground. When I pulled off the cover, it’s covered by dirt inside. Is it safe to spray out the inside with all the wires to the cylinoids or is there another way to clean it out?

I have a question. I installed this exact same valve and it revently started making the hammering noise and the irrigation system wont start either. It make the pipe from the main water pipe shake and I can hear the pipes inside the house shake too. I have tried troubleshooting but i couldnt find the issue
@westvalley411
@westvalley411 3 жыл бұрын
From your description, the noise is new and did not happen previously. The solenoid may not be initially closing completely. Check to ensure the connecting wires are dry and have a good contact with the common wire and use dielectric "grease" if needed. This the stuff you put on your car battery cables to make sure they have good contact. Also, Homes are supposed to be constructed with anti hammering devices in the plumbing system so that when appliances such as washers that turn on and off quickly and stop water flow immediately, the flow is absorbed into the devise and does not cause the hammering sound. The last thing I can think of is you might have a few copper pipes that have become loose from their brace over time and need to be secured, hope its not the latter.

Pipe dope or paste is for metal pipe only and a big no-no on plastic pipe. Most all dope or paste is oil or solvent base and will damage the plastic pipe and or valve (both). There are such things as ptfe paste and even liquid but it is still not a good idea to use these on pvc as they also contain chemicals that can damage plastic pipe and cause the threads to crumble.

I watched this video before changing my sprinkler valve and it still leaked after wrapping the adapter three times with tape. A proud moment quickly turned to disappointment when I turned the system on and saw water trickling down the pipe on the sprinkler side. Could it be that I didn't tighten enough? I didn't want to overtighten as the manual said. I wish there were a way we could check for leaks before we apply primer and cement. :(
@westvalley411
@westvalley411 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that. I know very frustrating. Did you use pipe dope too? (sealant). Plastic molds aren't perfect and can be mis-shaped. Try wrapping next time with 5x and top with sealant. I talked to plumber last week installing black gas pipe and reviewed survey data...all say best to use both. Hope you had extra pipe you can cut between thread connector and ground so you can redo.
@gloworm106
@gloworm106 3 жыл бұрын
@@westvalley411 thanks for the reply. I didn't use any pipe dope and will be getting some for the second try. I'll have to extend my pvc line a little higher now that I'll have to cut at the thread a second time. What's the difference between the RectorSeal in the tube you used vs the kind the comes in a can like primer and glue? I'm seeing my local Home Depot carries the one in a can too. Edited to add: I figured out a way to check for leaks at the thread before I glue permanently with cement. I'm going to use those screw-in compression couplings between the pvc from the valve and the pvc in the ground. If I run the system and nothing leaks down the threaded adapter, I'll remove the compressing couplings and glue a proper pvc coupling.
