I remember that I appreciated the fact that the first two parts were incredibly stylish and fashionable for early 2000s. I wanted to have those clothes that Carmen wore - they had kinda badass vibes. And the fact that most colours in the first two parts were black/red/brown but not Disney-ish bright blue/pink/green made this movie look more serious and "for adults". All the gadgets looked real because of the design and when I was a child and I played X-files with my friends, I imagined real guns and scary monsters that could kill us any minute. And Robert Rodriguez seemed to take kids seriously but at the same time he found a way to make it silly and funny for his viewers. I remember being disappointed and irritated by many kids movies in my childhood because at some point you start to feel as if those movies see morons and idiots in kids. Robert Rodriguez managed to avoid that.

the thing about Robert Rodriguez movies is that they were just kids movies. they weren't "fun for the whole family" where they add a bunch of "jokes for the adults". they were just movies where they did as much cool shit as they could in a very childlike manner and I think that's kind of what makes them as great as they are. They're dumb kids movies made to be cool to kids, and they don't try to be anything else

If you watch the DVD and Robert Rodriguez's own commentary, that was the point. These movies were designed to be as inventive as possible and that is why I like them. Surreal kids movies actually for kids. This movie came out about the same time as "Shark Tale" an animated kids movie that constantly references "Jaws" and "The Godfather" -- two R rated movies from the 70's that I'm sure every 6 to 8 year old had seen before seeing it.

I feel like these movies appealed so much to kids bc they're basically like if you took a kids pretend game and funded it. It's like a power fantasy sort of thing where all the parents are incompetent and the kids get to fix things by having cool gadgets and being smart n shit, plus there's wacky visuals and concepts. Makes about as much sense as what me and my sister pretended when we were kids.

The prop guy on the spy kids extras DVD I think said it best. When you're a kid, you are reliant on your parents to take you anywhere really, with these movies they equipped these kids to the 9's with gadgets being able to have your own jet pack, your own sub, your own plane, while also kicking adult ass? I mean come on it was probably the most empowering kids film of all time, even if it was totally ridiculous and unrealistic shit was totally awesome.

To elaborate on a small thing, OSS (if they are talking about the IRL one which they probably were) stands for 'Office of Strategic Services' That doesn't exist anymore, as it was replaced by the CIA in 1947. The OSS was founded in 1942 due to the lack of an intelligence agency. So this means in spy kids the OSS was never dissolved in 1945 after WWII and instead kept around. It is my belief this is the divergence point where Spy Kids splits from the IRL timeline.

4:19 i assumed that after the events of the first movie, the OSS realized that carmen and juni had some special skills (due to saving the world pretty much) and they granted them special privileges. I think it even showed that the director of OSS had some kind of special privileges over the position of the president. So actually, yes, I do think Juni would have called in some special favors and would have gotten her a special talk with the president. That's why they were "SK1" and "SK2" and not some random spy kids operatives that came after them.

This in my opinion is the best of all the Spy Kids movies. The first movie was good, but It was about two kids being thrown into a situation where have to rescue the actual spies. The 3rd had WAY too much CGI, not a lot of Carmen, and Juni wasn’t good at his job as before. Here, they were actually spy kids from the beginning of the movie, especially with the cool gadgets, that dinner fight scene, and them actually going on an assignment as agents. This was so cool to watch as a kid.

You should definitely review Spy Kids 3: Game Over !!! I still remember the betrayal I felt when I watched it for the first time and the line “I never even got her email address” which is so 2003. I enjoyed how Carmen is lost for a lot of it and it’s shows Juni’s growth as a character since he is alone/not with Carmen for a lot of the movie. Also It has Sylvester Stallone and Elijah Wood! There’s also Shorts (2009) which is also directed by Robert Rodriguez. It is an absolutely bonkers film and reminds me of the live action Cat In the Hat.

As adults, we realize how weird our childhood shows were, because we start applying cohesiveness, logic, and common sense onto these shows. Yet I do still enjoy watching these shows and I'd definitely never wish to unsee this part of my childhood. It's nice to think back to a simpler time where everything made sense for us, even if they actually didn't. It's a part of a child''s imagination and creativity to find patterns/logic where none is. Sometimes that skill is something I miss ❤

@@j.i.r608 Tbf, sometimes it's debatable what those childish things are and it depends from person-to-person how much they want to give them up while still being mature about it. For example, animation has had a history where most people have been dismissive of the medium with the assumption that it's "for kids" without realizing that animation can be made for anyone at any age, and that it can be insulting for people that make kids content (due to the assumption that when something is "for kids" that it's something of low quality, which isn't true). Also, a lot of the time, artists usually tap into their inner kid selves in order to create a lot of great art/media.

I'm so excited for his video on Spy Kids 3. It's an absolute masterpiece and there hasn't been a movie so great since it came out. A full 1 hour 24 minutes of pure pleasure. Make sure to watch for everyone to be slipping around on the ground like it's melted butter and the way things slide around in everybody's hands proves that friction doesn't exist in virtual reality. And you can tell they probably just blew like 70% of the budget just on getting Sylvester Stallone in the movie so by the time they paid all the special effects artists they had to have been like oh crap we have no budget left, well let's just have all the known adult actors jump into frame for a second and then skip the fight scene and have everyone act like they won the fight and no one will notice. Yeah it's absolutely amazing. It walked so that Sharkboy and Lavagirl could run
