This knife is truly impressive from tip to tail and is probably the best knife I've ever seen them make. Full recommendation.

Doc, I know that this is about a year old but I just had to say that the Drunken finally arrived at my doorstep this afternoon and I've lovingly fondled it for the past few hours with a big smile on my face 🤣 but seriously, this is a real gem and I don't regret the money I had to pay to make it mine and as such it's going to have a permanent place in my collection. Thanks for the video 😃

Have to agree with your conclusion that it is the finest spyderco ever. My favorite knife is still the PM2, but I appreciate the detail and execution of the Drunken. Beautiful piece of craftsmanship.

Excellent video. I think it is important to evaluate knives based on their purpose like you did. Although I can appreciate knives as pieces of art, and sometimes like to play with knives that are primarily used for cutting paper, what I am really interested in is knives that are actual tools. Thanks.

Love the review - what a gorgeous knife. I ultimately chose the Paysan over the Drunken, because I have to admit that I use my knives more as toys than tools. Love the videos, Doc!

I agree with your diagnosis. I think it’s definitely up their in Spydercos top knives ever made and my favorite knife made by Spyderco. Definitely schooling ZT, which bums me out that ZT doesn’t seem to be meeting the challenge. Great video and I appreciate the time you spend for us Knife enthusiasts.

lol sco has this thing at a retail list of $700. Selling for $550. The zt 0452, which is also too expensive lists for $275 and often goes for $225. That's like comparing a $20k car to a $40k car then being stunned when the car that costs twice as much is better. Are you slow? imho all of these items are too expensive for what they are but knife bros wont quit buying em, so it wont change.

I have the Kapara and just received the Drunken. Your final diagnosis is spot on in my book and the craftsmanship IS wonderful. However I do like the narrower handle, slightly less wide blade, the top locking release and liners of the Kapara making it my favorite of the two.

I hope this doesn’t sound like betrayal, but I’d like this to be a flipper without a spydie hole and a strong titanium clip. Then and only then will I consider such a high asking price, since it is a lovely knife. Love the Sinkovich look!

Great video, also bought the drunken and at first wasn't sure I had made a good purchase. In fact I almost sold it on! Pricey for a spyderco, but then I've carried and used it for 2 months, and it has easily become one of my favorite knives, along side the likes of my Chris Reeve Large Inkosi, etc. Couple of points, the fit and finish is superb, materials are lovely, the blade is gorgeous, the action is butter smooth and yet the lock up is rock solid, it is light weight and lastly it has great ergos.

Fantastic review on the drunken. I strongly believe Spyderco has the solid foundation and pedigree to start making higher end knives. For a very long time I wanted to owe a Spyderco knife but was swayed over to the ZT side and become a fanboy of ZT knives. It was only after watching so many of your vids and others that the PM2 seems to be a go to knife for size comparison. So I purchased my first PM2 knife and I became insta fan when I got my hands on it. Now I’m kicking myself why did I wait 9 years since it first launched in 2010 to finally get one. To make up for this neglect I’ve purchased the paysan and Yojimbo2 already but plan to get the drunken and shaman in the near future.

I really can’t find much to argue with you on this review, so well done. Mostly because I love the knife too even though I haven’t been able to afford it. Maybe at some point I will pull the trigger. I do like your comparisons of a few of Spyderco’s other standouts. Although I would like to see a thinner blade...I can’t really comment on it’s cutting ability. Great review...just makes me want it more.

The most annoying thing to me about many of the comments I read on this topic, and yes typically from fellow Americans, is the complete lack of understanding that the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China are not the same thing. Taichung produces great stuff, so if one's entire goal is anticommunist virtue signaling, perhaps a glance at a map is in order.

I love sinkevich designs the drunken looks great but i’m not a huge spyderco fan I have a few and sold a recent sprint run delica4 in sg2 just wasn’t for me, I prefer my zt’s or benchmade knives more especially my crk knives since I started collecting them I use all my knives no matter the cost unless going to sell them. I prefer my cold steel to spyderco as well. don’t get me wrong spyderco has some great knives just not my cup of tea who knows if I get my hands on the newer higher end models such as the drunken I might veer toward spyderco more but until then i’m wanting more of your other brands in the customs thanks as always for great views :)

Their customer service is lousy. I’ve seen people bust end of blades and they say for a price they’ll grind it down to smaller blade and put a point back on. Benchmade replaces the blade and sharpens it and cleans it up.

Everything about this knife appears to be perfect. _Except._ Left handers need not apply.
@nathanb316
@nathanb316 4 жыл бұрын
I'm left handed and I own this knife. Actually you can apply. I can open it just fine with my left hand from 4 different ways from 4 different fingers and I can close it one handed too. Now it may take a little practice to get use to it but once you are it's a breeze. I can post a video on here to prove it. I usually let it ride in my right pocket and it works better for left handers' that way because it wont scratch your smartphone screen which will be used more and pulled out of your pocket more times than your knife most likely will. I can always switch hands to use it which may be a slight draw back if you want to use this knife tactically but this is not the knife for you anyway if all you care about is tactical use. And I can still use it in my left pocket if I wanted to. And lets face it, how many times have you had to defend yourself with a knife? Even you are up against a gun its useless anyway. But even if I had to and this was in my left pocket I believe I STILL could do it. I can do it all one handed in my left hand and can even close this one handed in my left hand in a mere second as well. Case Closed. This knife is perfect. If anyone wants to challenge me on this I will upload a video of me writing in my left hand and then using this knife just like I said I could!

If you are crazy enough to spend $400 on knives then this probably isn't the only high end knife you have and so sometimes I wear a Benchmade Anthem in my left pocket and the Drunken in my right pocket. Its works great that way. Left handers' dream for your right pocket. But you can wear it in your left pocket too if you wanted to. I'm so use to opening this thing with my left hand and I don't even have to spidy flick it either!

I think the problem with Spyderco could be a branding issue here with the new higher end models. If people don’t watch your vids they don’t know the effort that went into the making of these higher end knives like the Paysan and Drunken. Like the car example you gave for the buster. The Spyderco is like the Toyota and so the paysan and drunken are like the Lexus models which is the luxury side of Toyota. Perhaps calling Spyderco elite or Spyder-gold! Just like the Lexus, you have to sit in it and drive it to appreciate the smoothness and awesome handling of the drive. Plus extra comfort from the nice leather seats.

"Spyderco makes simple knives" much in the same way as "Volvo makes simple cars." I personally LOVE the function over form approach combined with understated, dignified aesthetics... my black on black Shaman is gorgeous! Still though, "I'm not paying $400 for a Spyderco". Not until I own every iteration of PM2, Para3, Native5, Caribbean, Shaman, Sage... and there's the problem, Spyderco are so good at 1/2 to 1/4 the price, you dont HAVE to pay $400 for a great piece. I'm also not buying a $100k Volvo.

The drunken in and of itself is a better knife than ZT could dream to make. I think the issue lies in the warranty, as a 410 dollar knife, it should have the warranty and customer service that comes with that. Having the same warranty of a paramilitary 2 doesn’t do it many favors. I understand that this knife is built well enough that it shouldn’t have to be under warranty work readily, but I think part of the value of a knife is knowing that I won’t have to worry if I get a clip caught in a seatbelt or a screw strips.
@slidetek
@slidetek 5 жыл бұрын
Funny how just 3 years ago it was Spyderco that appeared lost in the woods, and ZT had it together. Things change quickly. Totally agree they need to fix their warranty, but I kind of feel their pain at the same time. Being Spyderco they attract a "wide audience" some of whom are less than seasoned on knives in general. However, at $410, they're creeping into a Koenig, Olamic (and formerly Holt) et al price range. These guys and others will honor a knife if you're the first or fifth owner. For the extra $100 or so, you've got a knife for life.

I completely agree with your sentiments about service and warranty. I am a huge Spyderco fan, but my personal warranty experience with them has been marginal. If this knife came with the same CS support that CRK offers, I would buy one today. (I’ve used CRK CS twice, each time it has made me want to buy another of their knives).

Picked mine up new for $370....I did have tools ready to "completely" re-bend the stock clip when I opened the box. The clip "looks" amazing on this knife....but....How did this experienced knife company get the clip function so wrong on a $400 Knife? That being said.....once "re-clipped"😬...and re-lubed with KPL light and heavy, I find the knife to be beautiful, functional and AMAZING! Definitely a step above all my other Spydercos, (yes..I have a Kapara).This was the offering that I waited 4 all year and apart from the clip I was not disappointed.

+Doctor Frunkey lets be honest, 24 thou isn't slicy or thin behind the edge. Looks to be ~40+ degrees inclusive too. That's not even great for production, or spyderco for that matter. I think companies believe that no one uses their expensive knives except for showing off and cutting printer paper, or knows the difference in a knife that actually cuts, so they just get away with laziness. The Paysan is even worse in that regard. A sharpened S90v pocket shovel is unnecessary in this current era of knives were in. Nothing is gained by having a light use knife that thick, S90v doesn't need to be babied like that either. It's like putting diesel in a Ferrari. You would think Spyderco would realize that they don't have to idiot proof and bomb proof their half a grand + knives. You're paying for performance, expect it. Good video nonetheless!

Before I begin I figured I’d say I’m biased, I take my clips off. Anyway, I think that clip might be by design. I can’t think of many other clips where you can bend them anywhere near that far without outright snapping. I think instead of relying on the geometry of the clip for security they were relying on the springiness. I don’t own a Drunken so i couldn’t tell you if that actually worked so if anyone has any other ideas let me know

I’m a Spyderco freak have been for years I pull the trigger next week will be dying until then. They have the absolute highest quality production facilities in Japan and Taiwan. ISO 9000 standards and zero defects . The fact they solicit custom knife designers is win-win now and into the future, just take a look at models out of production for years and the eBay prices . The Spyderco community are tight knit and we just can’t get enough field conditions or collectors safes :-)

Great spyderco, but *outdoing zt* is a huge stretch that shows some messed up perspective.... it would want to be as good / better than a ZT at 50%+ increase in cost... you say $120-140 more... thats a HUGE jump percentage wise. Take the ZT 0456, high end steels, full Ti handle, milling all over the place, one of the best actions on a folding knife by some of the most highly regarded knife reviewers online... US$260 in stores vs the drunken at US$410 in stores. USA Made CPM-20CV full Ti handle with LOADS of milling etc... $260 vs Taiwan lesser material knife for $410 (well over 50% price increase).

Don’t forget about that awesome spyderco warranty.......oh wait 🤔 if you bend that clip, strip a screw, wear out the lock you can’t get replacements because they don’t stock Taiwan parts in the USA. If you are spending $300 for a knife you have a problem, if you have to spend $400 as the Dr. recommends you need to take that money and go see a shrink as with anything else spending that kind of money on a knife is going to bring you no greater joy than a $200 knife of your liking, think about it is the joy meter really calibrated to separate that amount of joy factor,, I think not but per usual just my humble opinion.
