Күн бұрын

Had to repair the edge on the endura after my testing. reaharpened it and decided to test the 1 micron Gunny Juice stropping emulsion and see what kind of finish it leaves on k390 off a relatively low grit stone.
Abrasives used-
Venev pheonix series- F240/F400 diamond matrix stone
4 micron jende poly diamond emulsion
1 micron gunny juice poly diamond emulsion
strop material-basswood
Disclaimer- I am not affiliated with gunny juice, they didnt ask me to do this. I dont even personally know the creator of this emulsion. i am just impressed with the results and wanted to share my thoughts.

As you go to finer micron on emulsion do you expect to lose some agression as would be on finer and finer stones or is it not that bad or how do you look at that?

Its possible to have a highly polished edge with a nice amount of bite to it, but generally the higher you go the less aggressive it will be. Technique has a lot to do with it as well. Not just the tools used.

Whats your edge like off the 400? Can you still shave incredibly well? How much sharper does the stopping make the edge?

Screaming sharp. When you get proficient at freehand, your edges should be ridiculously sharp off a stone that fine. The f400 is equivalent to most 800 grit stones. My edges will easily shave hair off that stone or even the 240 grit side. Thats something id recommend to anyone learning freehand sharpening. Learn to get a shaving sharp edge off a 600 grit or lower stone before you start worrying about polishing bevels with high grit stones or using strops. You have to start with a good foundation. I just use the strops to polish the edge and bring out that hair whittling sharpness.

@@steel2stone ah I see. I'm not great at sharpening by anymeans but i can start to shave hair at a 1000 grit. But I go to the 6000 grit King stone and its ok but not the best and doesn't really give a mirror at all. And I've even used this on the back of chisels and just looks like a very white misty metal. Almost like a 3000 grit stone would do? Anyway if I can shave hair ok after a "6000" would this give me hair whittling sharp or would it be quite difficult? Just to put into perspective, when I finish on a 6k, I can shave every hair off my arm but have to put a bit of pressure down onto my arm in order to make a cut. And it feels quite like a razor burn afterwards. Any hope for me with the strops?

@@Firefoxtony i doubt it. If it takes pressure to shave then stropping probably won't get you to hair whittling. Focus on getting better off the lower grit stones. Forming the burr. Maintaining a consistent angle and then ultimately refining the scratch pattern on the edge as you go through the stones. But most importantly make sure you form a burr on both sides of the bevel on your lowest grit and with practice the sharpness your looking for will come. But i cant stress enough how important forming a burr is. Without that you have nothing.

@@steel2stone i can do the standing paper test with notebook paper which is the thinnest cheapest stuff you can find. It just minutely thicker than newspaper. Is that any good? Maybe I've forgotten how sharp i can get it so ill have to sharpen again as I haven't in a while. When you come off the 400 any tests that you should be able to do? Any way that I know how sharp yours is off the 400? Thanks a lot man

@@steel2stone scrap that. Just been sharpening again and realised I can easily shave with a 400 lol. Must have been in the old mindset. Haven't sharpened for ages so yeah I reckon I'm a bit better than I remembered hahaha. If I can do that, is it worth getting this compound? If so is it good to use it on leather and then on nanocloth?
