Cool video. “Randomly” showed in my feed after I ordered a Tasman. I have a lot of Spydercos including the Matriarch 2 and Civilian. Personally I would rather take a hit and run away than cut someone. My life would literally have to be on the line. I’ve EDC’d both for opening boxes and cutting bubble wrap, they’re fine. I wouldn’t want to use them for anything heavy duty though. Funny thing is, the more expensive the knife, the less I use it. My daily drivers have been the Harpy, Cricket and Para 2. The first two ended up breaking over time due to neglect. I learned that I’m supposed to clean, oil and periodically tighten the screws (if they have screws. The Harpy doesn’t). So I’ve had to rebuy those. I guess I’m more of a collector than anything else. Which isn’t bad or uncommon. Yeah, last thing I need is to be defending myself in court after defending myself in a violent way with either the Matriarch or Civilian as “exhibit A.”

Yeah my life would have to be on the line for me to pull either of those on somone. The damage would be horrible. I've had a screw fall out of my tasman salt but I abuse the crap out of that poor thing lol. My thing is that I try to use all my knives but if I find out one has been discontinued I baby it since it can't be replaced. Like my Spyderco Sustain

About 8 years ago, I was gifted a Civilian model by a friend; which is a larger version of the Matriarch. I’ve been using if for the same number of years as a gardening, pruning knife. I also cut all sorts of stuff like boxes, fertilizer bags, plastic fences, rope, rubber/plastic hoses etc. A tiny piece of the needle tip broke the first day I used it from hitting rocks in the earth while pruning trees. I re-profiled the tip which made it sturdier and it never broke again. The Matriarch’s tip is a bit more solid then the Civilian so it should do well for the type of EDC mentioned above. Obviously both the Matriarch and Civilian were made as SD knives, mine came with a little brown tag saying not made for EDC. Who cares about warning tags, If it works it works! I also have a Harpy model but the Civi simply works better for me and the belly portion of the blade is very useful. That being said if I lost my Civilian, I’d definitely get a Matriarch and if I lost the Harpy I’d get the Tasman. They seem to be just as good for less money. As for SD, I think any of those knives could inflict serious damage.

Notice the lack of the Emerson wave patent printed on the blade. Wonder when they changed that to not include it.

Haha Sorry man any meat I buy is going in my stomach first. I'll see if I can make that happen when I do a dedicated review of the matriarch.

Did you ever hear from the Cold Steel Black Talon? Same purpose but much better and stronger.

I got to handle a couple talons and they are scary knives. I'm just not as impressed as I am with the matriarch. From what little experience i have with it the cold steel talon is a great knife and I would trust my life with it. But in my opinion i think overall the matriarch is slightly better and thats what I'd want to have on me if I had to pick just one for self defense. But you can't go wrong with either. Thanks for the comment man, I'll have to see if I can borrow somebody's talon and do a propper comparison.

...some brutal honesty....my own opinion....I think companies need to sell knives so they hype up any knife anyway they can. While the Matriarch looks fierce...has any one done some real world testing? I mean simulate a "self-defence" cut e.g. on some raw meat inended for a BBq....how good would this knife REALLY do?? :) Maybe vs a Karambit vs other curved blade "fighting knives"...would be interesting to see... Would an actiive duty soldier use this knife? over a fixed blde "fightig knife"? I find it odd Spyderco would make this knife and sell it to civilians...knowing full well there are idiots out there who will play with their knives after they've been to the bar...or some dummy will leave the knife on the counter for their 10 year old boy to pickup and play with with his little bro or sister.....

Thanks for the burtal honesty ma , its always appreciated. From my own testing the matriarch definitely lives up to the hype. I've tested both of these knives on water bottles and old pairs of jeans. The matriarch cuts better and more effectively than any knife I own, and I own way to many knives lol. Better than my karambits or even my ronin 2, which is by far my sharpest knife. I doubt a soldier would need to carry this knife. It's way to specific in its design. From talking to veterans at my work (my day job is selling knives at a knife counter) you want a good tough knife that you can use for any task in the field like cutting through wire, opening MREs, breaching doors, anything a soldier would use a knife for. Plus it should be able to be effective in a fight. For example a kabar. No Folding knife will ever replace a fixed blade in that situation. Spyderco makes it very clear in the packaging that the matriarch is a weapon and should be treated carefully and with respect. So I think they do a good job warning the buyer of what they're getting into. I personally don't ever hand mine to people without a long talk about how careful they need to be when handling it. Thanks for commenting man, it's always good to hear the opinions of fellow knife enthusiasts. Hope you're having a good one!

Really dumb. People shouldn't make new knife designs, (or rework old ones, it's a Hawkbill" because someone might play with one when drunk, or someone's sibling could get it! Would hate to see what you think about guns following that line of logic... How about some responsibility in how one handles things? A sharp knife is a sharp knife.

One of the best Byrd knives available imo, until they make one with a better steel, like a FRN Harpy with VG-10 or something, would totally get that one
