Millions of people fall victim to scams every year.
Many are run from criminal call centres, where teams of fraudsters operate around the clock.
An online vigilante, who goes by the name "Jim Browning", decided to do something about it. He hacked into a call centre in India where scammers target victims around the world.
Jim gained access to recorded scam phone calls as well as CCTV footage exposing the scammers at work.
What Jim did was illegal - but he says he wants to stop the fraudsters, and he passed his footage on to BBC Panorama.

88Worron88 , no he could do the same as a mercenary of sorts. Since they committing the crime are not US citizens, they do not have the rights to privacy that a US citizen has, therefore since they already committed the crime from a third world country they are voided of all privacy. Even simpler they are voided of that privacy when they connect with Jim’s computer.

@Joaquín Cerutti No, it's not like SWAT, Interpol is more of an intelligentsia. They work alongside (not police officers) but with the police force. If a criminal travels to another country interpol suspects some sort of deal or crime is being planned, they will work with the police force of said country, share the information they have of the suspect and attempt to apprehend the suspect. They also give tips on intelligence gathered of potential suspects for the local police to investigate. This is perfect for Jim. Cos all he does is gather information, compile the data and study their SOP's. Without the help of the BBC, Jim alone couldn't have got this to have so much attention, the police in India had to seize the illegal business. And working for interpol, Jim can do all the hacking he needs to pick these bastards 1 by 1, especially with a budget backing him. If you had watched Jim's videos, you can see what 1 man alone in his home and his computer can do to these guys, imagine if there was a dedicated team from the cybercrime division led by Jim.

Indian police are life-term employment. Once they join the force it does not matter what becomes of them, some are unfit medically, technically. Maybe it is time to threated India with cutting them off of the internet, if they don't put an end or atleast show some action with regard to this problem. Either that or maybe Jim should team up with the US military. When he finds a scammer headquarter, they send in the Reaper drones and blow up the scammer headquarters. Have said the same with the Nigerian pirates....Every time they find pirates in skiffs, trying to attack ships, just sink the fuckers and film it and make sure that everyone in Nigeria knows that there is a big risk of being shot or your ship being sunk a long way from land, essentially making you shark food. Law is bit different here, only the court can take suo moto action not the police. And it's a international racket controlled by the master minds from USA and Mexico. They use those call center from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and some African countries, without having proactive kinds of law. How do you think they get all those information about you?? I used to know a man who worked for a scam call support. They had not been told about those things when they are being recruited. They used to get 3-4 month salary after their joining without any work, and then asked to do this kind of things or leave the job. They get the details of their targets from their handler, and get the salary after completing a fixed number of target. He left the job after getting another job at a reputed software development company. After 2-3 month of his departure from the company, the company had been sealed off by Kolkata Police and more than 60 people had been arrested. They had bank account across USA, UK, AUSTRALIA, GERMANY, SWEDEN and many more country with all most $90 million.

I think it has something to do with the international laws and jurisdiction issues. Saw this in one of the interviews about this topic, as in the Indian police cannot take action against these guys if no official complaint is registered. And a complaint from foreign land should come thru interpol or some similar agency. It's the similar case where a lot of high-profile criminals from India get refuge in London, and Indian police has to go thru international agencies to reach them, as the local police refuse to recognise them as criminals.

I come from the guitar world and was always into creating and modifying electronics and circuitry. I've been watching Jim for years and years and it helped inspire me to learn Linux and Windows environments and networking. I'm far from a hacker like Jim, but it's nice to at least understand the methods used to prevent being scammed and informing others what not to do. I also learned not to tell friends and family because I end up having to fix everything they mess up. Now half of my boomer relatives are running Linux mint lol
